The Influence of Treated and Untreated Subclinical Hypothyroidism on Metabolic Profile in Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.
2021
Background. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hypothyroidism are the most common endocrinological disorders among women of reproductive age. Since hypothyroidism occurs more frequently in PCOS patients, it is vital to explain its clinical impact. Aim. To evaluate the impact of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and its treatment on the metabolic profile of patients with PCOS. Methods. 190 women with PCOS phenotype A were enrolled in the case-control study. They were divided into three groups: 38 women with PCOS and subclinical hypothyroidism, 76 women with PCOS and SCH under thyroid replacement therapy, and 76 women with PCOS and normal thyroid function (control group). Serum lipids, fasti…
Dietary cholic acid lowers plasma levels of mouse and human apolipoprotein A-I primarily via a transcriptional mechanism
2000
To induce dietary atherosclerosis in mice, high-fat/high-cholesterol (HF) diets are frequently supplemented with cholic acid (CA). This diet produces low plasma levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL). However, HF diets without any added CA, which more closely resemble human diets, increase levels of both HDL and LDL, suggesting that CA may be responsible for the lowering of HDL. Our aim was to examine the potential mechanism responsible for the lowering of HDL. Nontransgenic (NTg) C57BL mice and apoA-I-transgenic (apoAI-Tg) mice, with greatly increased basal apoA-I and HDL levels, were used. Mice were fed the following four diets: control (…
Management of Dyslipidemia in the Metabolic Syndrome
2007
In order to characterize the metabolic syndrome it becomes necessary to establish a number of diagnostic criteria. Because of its impact on cardiovascular morbidity/mortality, considerable attention has been focussed on the dyslipidemia accompanying the metabolic syndrome. The aim of this review is to highlight the fundamental aspects of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and the treatment of the metabolic syndrome dyslipidemia with recommendations to clinicians. The clinical expression of the metabolic syndrome dyslipidemia is characterized by hypertriglyceridemia and low levels of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C). In addition, metabolic syndrome dyslipidemia is associated with hi…
Cardiovascular primary prevention risk factors in a nationwide survey, ABC (atrial fibrillation, high blood pressure and high cholesterol) risk facto…
2021
Abstract Background The National Health Service in England “Long Term Plan” aims to prevent 150,000 strokes and myocardial infarctions over the next 10 years. To achieve this, resources are being allocated to improve early detection of conditions strongly associated with cardiovascular disease. This includes working towards people routinely knowing their “ABC” risk factors (“A”: atrial fibrillation (AF), “B': hypertension and “C”: high cholesterol) (1). Purpose The aims of this study were to: 1) determine the proportion of participants with “A”, “B”, and “C” criteria; and 2) to identify risk factors for patients fulfilling any of these criteria. Methods LIPIDOGRAM2015 was a nationwide cross…
Genistein in the Metabolic Syndrome: Results of a Randomized Clinical Trial
2013
Context: This study was performed to evaluate the effects of genistein on metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors in Caucasian postmenopausal subjects with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Objective: Our objective was to assess the effects of genistein on surrogate endpoints associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Design and Setting: This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial at 3 university medical centers in Italy. Patients: Patients included 120 postmenopausal women with MetS according to modified Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP), Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (Adult Tre…
Hypolipidaemic effects of fenofibrate and fasting in the herbivorous grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) fed a high-fat diet
2008
We investigated whether the hypolipidaemic effect of fenofibrate and fasting observed in most omnivorous mammals may also apply to herbivorous fish. Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) fed a high-fat (8 %) diet exhibited a marked increase in blood lipids and body fat after 6 weeks. They were then treated with fenofibrate (100 mg/kg body weight) in the same high-fat diet for 2 weeks, followed by fasting for 1 week. Plasma lipid concentration, body fat amount, fatty acid composition, plasma thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and some parameters related to hepatic fatty acid oxidation were measured, and liver samples were stained for histological examination. Fenofibrate treatment decrea…
Effectiveness of Enteric-Coated Preparations on Nutritional Parameters in Cystic Fibrosis
1988
To evaluate the effectiveness of enteric-coated pancreatic enzyme supplements in comparison to conventional preparations of ingested enzyme on growth and nutritional parameters of patients with cystic fibrosis, we conducted a long-term study involving 40 patients. The data reproduced here were recorded after 6 months of therapy with powder-containing capsules or with enteric-coated products. Fat absorption was estimated by measurement of steatorrhoea with the steatocrit method. All parameters studied improved after enteric-coated pancreatic enzyme therapy, with a statistically significant increase in weight, cholesterol and haemoglobin values. Furthermore, the number of patients with positi…
3104Associations between cardiovascular disease, cancer and very low hdl cholesterol in the reasons for geographical and racial differences in stroke…
2017
AIMS: Relatively little is known about the health outcomes associated with very low plasma concentrations of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) mainly because of the small numbers of individuals with such extreme values included in clinical trials. We therefore investigated the association between low and very low HDL-C concentration at baseline and incident all-cause-mortality, death from malignant disease (i.e. cancer), and with fatal or non-fatal incident coronary heart disease (CHD) in individuals from the Reasons for Geographical And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study. METHODS AND RESULTS: Analysis was based on 21,751 participants from the REGARDS study who were fre…
Atherogenic lipoprotein phenotype and LDL size and subclasses in drug-naïve patients with early rheumatoid arthritis.
2009
Abstract Objective : Subjects with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have increased cardiovascular risk and may show atherogenic forms of dyslipidemia. The present study investigated whether patients with early RA, beyond alterations in plasma lipids, also show lower LDL size and altered LDL subclass distribution. Design and Methods We identified 25 subjects with RA (47±8 years, body mass index (BMI) 25±4kg/m 2 ) by the American College of Rheumatology diagnostic criteria, with a disease durations Results As compared to controls RA patients had higher plasma triglycerides (1.8±0.5 vs. 1.0±0.5mmol/L, p p =0.0027), while total- and LDL-cholesterol concentrations were similar. LDL particle size was lo…
PO-185 Lifestyle intervention modify DNA methylation of adipose tissue in overweight and obese men with insomnia symptoms
2018
Objective To study whether diet and exercise intervention affect sleep and obesity-related genes’ DNA methylation in overweight and obese men with insomnia symptoms
Methods The study participants were a subgroup of a large intervention and consisted of 10 overweight or obesity men aged 34-65 years with insomnia symptoms. They participated in a 6-month progressive aerobic exercise training and individualized dietary consoling program and were randomly selected from diet (n=4), exercise (n=3) and control (n=3) groups. Body composition included fat mass and lean mass in the whole body and abdominal android region were assessed by dual-energy X-ray densitometry. The fitness level (VO2max)…
