Beals–Hecht syndrome and choroidal neovascularization
2010
Purpose: To describe a case of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in a female diagnosed with Beals–Hecht syndrome. Methods: A retrospective, interventional case is described in a 26-year-old female complaining of metamorphopsia and visual loss in her left eye (counting fingers). The fluorescein angiogram and the optical coherence tomography supported the diagnosis of CNV. Intravitreal ranibizumab was administered. Results: After the third intravitreal ranibizumab, her visual acuity improved to 0.8 and the morphology of the macular area was restored. Conclusions: To our knowledge this is the first report of CNV in Beals–Hecht syndrome treated with ranibizumab. Self-monitoring by periodically…
Development of choroidal neovascularization following transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) for a small malignant melanoma of the choroid at the posteri…
2010
Abstract Introduction The malignant melanoma of the choroid is the most common primary malignant intraocular tumor in adults. There are currently several methods available for the treatment of choroidal melanomas. Among others, hyperthermia represents a therapeutic approach in which infrared radiation is delivered through the dilated pupil, called “transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT)”. The method was initially assumed to cause only a few side effects but gradually more and more complications have been observed. The treatment is associated with a number of vascular responses, for example arterial and venous occlusions. However neovascularizations of the choroid have only been detected twice s…

Automated macular choroidal thickness measurement by swept-source optical coherence tomography in pseudoxanthoma elasticum
2016
Introduction Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) typically involves elastic fibers in blood vessels and Bruch membrane. Our purpose was to analyze retinal and choroidal macular thickness in patients with angioid streaks due PXE compared with a control group. Methods Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), axial length (AL), and macular swept-source optical coherence tomography were obtained. Automated segmentations of the retina and the choroid were used to obtain the corresponding thickness values. An age, gender and AL matched control group was used to compare the thickness values. Results Twelve eyes of 6 patients were included. The mean BCVA was 0.68 ± 0.29 versus 1.0 in controls (p < 0.001). T…

Morphologische und funktionelle Ergebnisse nach transpupillarer Thermotherapie (TTT) maligner Aderhautmelanome
2006
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the course of tumor regression and visual impairment in choroidal melanomas treated by transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) alone. PATIENTS AND METHODS In a prospective, non-randomized analysis 26 patients suffering from primary choroidal melanoma (posterior to the equator with base < or = 12 and thickness < or = 4.5 mm) were treated with the TTT standard protocol and followed for 33 - 45 months. Fluorescein and ICG angiographies were performed initially and after tumor regression clinically. RESULTS 22 tumors were significantly flattened after 1 - 3 TTT sessions. 4 tumors required additional therapy with ruthenium plaque. Visual acuity remaine…
Evolving European guidance on the medical management of neovascular age related macular degeneration
2006
BACKGROUND: Until recently, only two options were available for the treatment of choroidal neovascularisation (CNV) associated with age related macular degeneration (AMD)-thermal laser photocoagulation and photodynamic therapy with verteporfin (PDT-V). However, new treatments for CNV are in development, and data from phase III clinical trials of some of these pharmacological interventions are now available. In light of these new data, expert guidance is required to enable retina specialists with expertise in the management of AMD to select and use the most appropriate therapies for the treatment of neovascular AMD. METHODS: Consensus from a round table of European retina specialists was obt…
Transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) – Is it time to say good-bye?
2010
Abstract Purpose To evaluate the effectiveness of transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) for the closure of classic and occult subfoveal choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and to discuss whether TTT is a useful treatment modality for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Materials and methods The present paper is a retrospective review of the clinical results from a patient group which was treated with TTT in the University Eye Clinic in Mainz. From January 2000 to December 2002, a total of 20 eyes of 20 patients with subfoveal CNV (due to AMD in 16 eyes, due to pathologic myopia in 4 eyes) received TTT. The procedure was delivered using an infrared diode laser at 810 nm, equipped with a modi…
Classic Choroidal Neovascularization
2009
Since Donald Gass’s pioneering work in 1967, which demonstrated the role of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in wet (exudative) AMD, visible (classic) CNV, well demarcated and well-defined on fluorescein angiography, has become the most characteristic form of AMD.
