WISING UP: THE EVOLUTION OF NATURAL THEOLOGY

2012

This essay is in response to Professor Celia Deane-Drummond's 2012 Boyle lectures. The first part calls attention to the value and significance of her “sophianic theo-drama hypothesis” for the contemporary engagement between Christian theology and evolutionary science. In a sense, her proposal itself is a religious “adaptation” to changes within an international, interdisciplinary academic environment. The second part of the essay explores the rapidly shrinking “niche” of Christian natural theology and briefly summarizes an alternative set of hypotheses from the biocultural sciences of religion.

What does Ramon Llull mean when he says «[el resclús] se maravellá com podia esser que Deus no exoya la natura humana de Jesucrist, qui pregava per s…

2014

The proto-novel Fèlix, o Llibre de meravelles contains many unsettling «meravelles» or «wonders». One such consists in an observation made by a «recluse» —rather than by a professional theologian— concerning the prayers of Christ and of Mary and the angels, etc., to the effect that their prayers have been unable to call forth any response from God. The efficacy of such prayers is thus brought into question, as is the readiness of God’s mercy and grace. By contextualising such matters within medieval currents of Neoplatonism, particularly the doctrine of causality, I argue that Llull presents a causally conceived theorisation of the hypostatic union. I identify Biblical and medieval preceden…

New Testament Christology in its Hellenistic Reception

2001

This survey provides a sort of ‘counterpoint’ to the way in which the history of research has actually gone. In reaction to the ‘Religionsgeschichtliche Schule’, nowadays the Jewish origins of NT Christology are usually pointed out. But when we pay attention to its ‘reception’ in Greco-Roman culture, some of the old findings may still prove useful. This article seeks to check this, taking into account especially the alternative models of explanation offered by the ‘New Religionsgeschichtliche Schule’.

Amplified John? Kristologiske tekster i Johannesevangeliet og Bibelselskapets NT05-oversettelse

2011

Author's version of an article published in the journal: Tidsskrift for teologi og kirke. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/ttk/2011/02/art03 The article argues that the latest translation of the New Testament (NT05) by the Norwegian Bible Society has a tendency to amplify several Christological texts in the Gospel of John. It consists of two parts: Part 1 discusses the translation of John 1:1–5, 1:14, 1:15 and 1:18, and offers a new general interpretation of the prologue. Part 2 treats the translation of ekserkjomai in Joh 8:42, 13:3, 16:27–30, and 17:8.

Jesus fra Nikea? - Tre merknader til Oskar Skarsaunes visdomskristologi

2014

Author's version of an article in the journal: Teologisk tidsskrift. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/tt/2014/03/jesus_fra_nikea_-_tre_merknader_til_oskar_skarsaunes_visdo This article discusses three key aspects of the wisdom Christology of Oskar Skarsaune, as it is portrayed in his influential book Inkarnasjonen – myte eller faktum? (1988; Incarnation – myth or fact?, 1991): (1) The claim that Jesus through his “first-person speech” speaks with divine authority that makes an identification with the wisdom figure inevitable. (2) The emphasis that the messiah category is insufficient to describe the person of Jesus. (3) The emphasis that wisdom is begotten – and …

Dwie wspólne deklaracje komisji dialogu katolicko-asyryjskiego. Status quaestionis i perspektywy

2018

2012

Author's version of an article in the journal: Teologisk Tidsskrift. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/tt/2012/01/art06 The article consists of two parts: Part one seeks to demonstrate (contra Bauckham) that Jewish monotheism in the Second Temple period was of a flexible character. It argues that Jewish writers in this period could attribute «divine functions» to figures beside God, while still feeling committed to «one God». The Jewish monotheism of this period was therefore not constituted by functions or characteristics, but rather by the exclusive worship of the one God. Part two argues that Paul describes Jesus with a high position beside God, while still fee…

Paschalna chrystologia Wacława Hryniewicza

2016

Na tle zasadniczych nurtów współczesnej chrystologii i klasyfikacji sporządzonej przez kard. Waltera Kaspera przedstawiono kilka istotnych założeń i cech chrystologii Wacława Hryniewicza. Źródła artykułu ograniczono do jego paschalnej trylogii: Chrystus nasza Pascha (1982), Nasza Pascha w Chrystusie (1987), Pascha Chrystusa w dziejach człowieka i wszechświata (1991). Głęboko biblijne, teologiczno-historycznie i ekumenicznie rozważania starały się pokazać, że paschalna chrystologia Hryniewicza unika niebezpieczeństwa jednostronnych ujęć różnych kierunków chrystologii kerygmatyczno-dogmatycznej, jak i chrystologii ukierunkowanych wyłącznie na Jezusa historycznego. Paschalna chrystologia zdaje…
