A methacrylate-based monolithic capillary column has been evaluated for the preconcentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from environmental water samples. For this purpose, the monolyte was in situ synthesized in a 6cm×0.32mm id fused-silica capillary. The microextraction unit was fitted to a micro-HPLC pump to pass 10mL of sample. The isolated pollutants were eluted by means of 10μL of methanol, the organic phase being directly collected in a specific interface that can be fitted to the injection port of the gas chromatograph without modification. The application of headspace gas chromatography coupled to tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry for the analysis of furan in baby food samples.

Abstract Selective methodology employing a tandem quadrupole mass spectrometer coupled to a gas chromatograph with headspace autosampler (HS-GC–MS/MS) was elaborated in this study. Application of the elaborated procedure resulted in a limit of detection of 0.021 μg kg −1 and a limit of quantification of 0.071 μg kg −1 . The mean recoveries during in-house validation ranged from 89% to 109%, and coefficients of variation for repeatability ranged from 4% to 11%. The proposed analytical method was applied for monitoring the furan content of 30 commercial baby food samples available on the Latvian retail market. Chemical composition of commercial Origanum compactum and Cinnamomum zeylanicum essential oils and the antifungal activity against pathogenic fungi isolated from Mediterranean rice grains have been investigated. Sixty-one compounds accounting for more than 99.5% of the total essential oil were identified by using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Determination of mycotoxins in bee pollen by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Bee pollen, promoted as a natural food supplement, is consumed increasingly by people to maintain a healthy diet. Depending on environmental conditions, pollen can also be an optimum medium for growth of molds such as Fusarium and Penicillium . A quick, easy, cheap, rapid, and safe (QuEChERS) extraction procedure followed by a gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) determination of eight selected Fusarium toxins in bee pollen was developed and optimized. Recovery studies at 20, 80, and 1000 μg/kg showed values between 73 and 95% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of15% for all studied mycotoxins. Occurrence of Fusarium mycotoxins and their dietary intake through beer consumption by the European population

Abstract Since cereals are raw materials for production of beer and beer-based drinks, the occurrence mycotoxins in 154 beer samples was topic of investigation in this study. The analyses were conducted using QuEChERS extraction and gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry determination. The analytical method showed recoveries for vast majority of analytes ranged from 70% to 110%, relative standard deviations lower than 15% and limits of detection from 0.05 to 8 μg/L. A significant incidence of HT-2 toxin and deoxynivalenol (DON) were found in 9.1% and 59.7% of total samples, respectively. Natural co-occurrence of mycotoxins in wheat grains from Italy and Syria

This article describes the application of an analytical method for the detection of 25 mycotoxins in wheat grain based on simultaneous extraction using matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) followed by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry, a hybrid triple quadrupole-linear ion trap mass spectrometer (QTrapÒ). Information Dependent Acquisition (IDA), an extra confirmation tool for samples that contain the target mycotoxins, was used. A survey of trichothecenes, zearalenone and patulin in milled grain-based products using GC-MS/MS.

An analytical protocol based on QuEChERS and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) was successfully applied for the determination of trichothecenes, patulin and zearalenone in 182 milled grain-based samples. The analytical method was validated following the SANCO 1495/2011 document. LOQs were lower than 10μgkg(-1) for the selected mycotoxins. Recoveries of fortified cereals ranged between 76-108% and 77-114% at 20 and 80μgkg(-1), respectively, with relative standard deviation lower than 9%. Characterization of Fusarium spp. isolates by PCR-RFLP analysis of the intergenic spacer region of the rRNA gene (rDNA)

In the present study, 44 Fusarium spp. isolates (5 Fusarium culmorum, 7 Fusarium graminearum, 1 Fusarium cerealis, 1 Fusarium poae, 26 Fusarium oxysporum, and 4 Gibberella fujikuroi species complex) were characterized morphologically, physiologically and genetically. Determination of Selected Phthalates by Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry in Personal Perfumes

A simple and fast method is proposed to analyze commercial personal perfumes. Our method includes measurement of phthalates, known to be major sources of endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDC), which originate from the less volatile fraction of perfumes. The quantification of phthalates were carried out directly with no sample preparation required on 30 samples of commercial products using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) as a detector.
