A passive sampling-based analytical strategy for the determination of volatile organic compounds in the air of working areas.

Abstract An analytical methodology based on the use of a polyethylene layflat tube filled with activated carbon and Florisil (ACFL-VERAM) was employed for the passive sampling of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air of working areas of packing industries. VOCs amount in the ACFL-VERAM sampler was directly determined through head-space-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-GC–MS) allowing a direct determination in only 20 min without the need of any previous treatment. Breath testing as a method for detecting lung cancer

Early diagnosis of lung cancer is important due to high mortality in late stages of the disease. An ideal approach for population screening could be the breath analysis, due to its non-invasiveness, simplicity and cheapness. Using sensitive methods of analysis like gas chromatography/mass spectrometry in exhaled air of cancer patients were discovered some volatile organic compounds - possible candidates for cancer markers. Identification of organic compounds in fictile unguentaria from two Sicilian necropolis of Greek age (5th century, b.c.) by GC-MS analysis.

A study to obtain more knowledge on funeral set in Greek age, (5th Century, b.C.) was carried out on thirteen ancient unguentaria, small vessels used as containers of balms or ointments, founded in two different Sicilian necropolis: Adranon and Hymera. Every find was subjected to three extractions by increasing polarity solvents. All crude extracts, unsaponifiables and methyl esters of saponifiable fraction were analysed by GC-MS. Analysis showed difference between two groups of finds: the unguentaria from Adranon show abundant traces of lipids used in balm making, while those from Hymera resulted empty and buried for ritual purpose. A confirmatory and sensitive procedure has been developed for the determination of 40 currently used pesticides (Cups) in airborne particulate matter (PM 10) at trace level. The proposed method includes extraction of PM 10-bound pesticides by microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) followed by a gel permeation chromatography (GPC) clean-up and determination by GC-MS/MS. The injection mode and the main parameters in MS/MS were optimized. The matrix effect was also evaluated. Recoveries ranged from 70 to 120% except for pyrimethanil and pirimicarb. Abstract High molecular mass fractions of lignin and humic compounds in sediments and waters downstream of a pulp mill were characterized applying pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results were compared to those obtained using reversed phase HPLC on the cupric oxide oxidation products. International audience; This paper describes the use of a suite of extraction procedures applicable to the assessment of the in vitro toxicity of paper/board samples intended for food-contact applications. The sample is extracted with ethanol, water, or exposed to modified polyphenylene oxide (Tenax) for fatty, non-fatty and dry food applications, respectively. The water extracts are directly suitable for safety assessment using in vitro bioassays. The ethanol extracts of the paper/board and of the exposed Tenax require pre-concentration to give acceptable sensitivity. The extraction media were either hot or cold water, 95% ethanol or Tenax, according to the end use of the sample. The extractable dry matter content of the samples varied from 1200 to 11,800 mg/kg (0.8-35.5 mg/dm2).
