The organic electrochemical transistor (OECT), capable of transducing small ionic fluxes into electronic signals in an aqueous environment, is an ideal device to utilize in bioelectronic applications. Currently, most OECTs are fabricated with commercially available conducting poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-based suspensions and are therefore operated in depletion mode. Here, we present a series of semiconducting polymers designed to elucidate important structure–property guidelines required for accumulation mode OECT operation. We discuss key aspects relating to OECT performance such as ion and hole transport, electrochromic properties, operational voltage, and stability. The demo…
Langmuir–Blodgett films based on inorganic molecular complexes with magnetic or optical properties
2005
Langmuir and Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films of a great variety of molecular metal complexes with interesting magnetic or optical properties have been prepared in the last few years. Some of the results obtained by our group and others are summarized in this article. (i) LB films of polyoxometalates (POM) were first prepared taking advantage of the adsorption properties of these cluster anions along a positively charged monolayer of an organic surfactant spread in water. A correct choice of the POM allowed the preparation of LB films with magnetic, electrochromic, or luminescent properties. Besides this semiamphiphilic method, two new methods to prepare LB films of POMs have been developed by …
Symmetric naphthalenediimidequaterthiophenes for electropolymerized electrochromic thin films
2015
A new symmetric naphthalenediimidequaterthiophene (s-NDI2ODT4) was synthesized and exhibited the capability to electropolymerize alone or with EDOT affording polymers with controlled donor/acceptor monomer ratios. s-NDI2ODT4-EDOT-based copolymers showed low band gaps, wide optical absorption ranges extending to the near IR region, tuned electrical properties, thin-film surface morphology and hydrophilicity as well as high coloration efficiency in electrochromic devices.
Effects of anions size on the redox behavior of poly(o-toluidine) in acid solutions. An in situ vis-NIR cyclic spectroelectrogravimetry study
2014
International audience; The combination of different in situ techniques allows a more complete analysis combining several physical and chemical processes of polymer-modified electrodes to be obtained. The hybrid technique -cyclic electrogravimetry coupled with visible-near infrared spectroscopy- was used to study in depth the electrochemistry of poly(o-toluidine) (POT) thin films. In this work, a POT modified electrode was polarized between the pernigraniline and leucoemeraldine forms in 0.5 M HNO3 and 0.5 M HClO4 solutions. The electrochromic properties of View the MathML sourcePOT-CIO4− and View the MathML sourcePOT-NO3− were localized in the experimental potential range associated to the…
Photoresponsive Ferroelectric Liquid-Crystalline Polymers
2007
The photoresponse of ferroelectric smectic side-chain liquid-crystalline (LC) polymers containing a photoisomerizable azobenzene derivative as a covalently linked photochromic side group is investigated. By static measurements in different photostationary states, the effect of trans-cis isomerization on the material's phase-transition temperatures and its ferroelectric properties (spontaneous electric polarization Ps and director tilt angle 0) are analyzed. It turns out that the Curie temperature (transition S C * to S A ) can be reversibly shifted by up to 17 °C. The molecular mechanism of this "photoferroelectric effect" is studied in detail using time-resolved measurements of the dye's o…
Synthesis and magnetic properties of an iron 1,2-bisthienyl perfluorocyclopentene photochromic coordination compound
2011
Abstract The coordination compound Fe(BM-4-PTP) 2 (NCS) 2 ⋅2MeOH ( 1 ) including the photoisomerizable ligand BM-4-PTP (1,2-bis(2′-methyl-5′-(pyrid-4″-yl)thien-3′-yl)perfluorocyclopentene) was obtained as an orange powder. The powder turns blue upon photocyclization of the 1,2-bisthienyl photochromic ligand induced by UV light irradiation at room temperature. Photocycloreversion is obtained by visible light irradiation of the material in the solid state. The orange and blue powders were investigated over the temperature range (5–293 K) and pressure range (1 bar–12 kbar) by magnetic susceptibility measurements and variable temperature 57 Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy. The photo-induced colour ch…
Spin crossover in soft matter
2014
Abstract This review article is devoted to the study of the spin crossover phenomenon in soft matter. Spin crossover compounds, though known for decades, bear the potential for practical applications in switching, sensing and display devices. Having arrived at a reasonable understanding of the spin transition process in solid and liquid states, one trend in this research field is to extend the knowledge into soft matter. The review begins with a brief description of Langmuir–Blodgett thin films based on FeII coordination compounds since it represents the first study of the spin crossover phenomenon in soft matter. The following section illustrates the FeII, FeIII and CoII complexes reported…
Modulation of the Electronic Properties in Polydithienotiiophene Materials
1997
AbstractConjugated polymers with narrow band gap are promising candidates for symmetric electrochemical devices, such as electrochromics and redox supercapacitors, which involve the pand n-doped state of the polymer. Polydithienothiophene materials which are prepared from isomer monomers show this characteristic. The copolymerisation of two dithienothiophene isomers leads to materials whose electronic properties depend on the monomer ratio. Optical and electrochemical characterizations of different copolymers are reported and discussed.
A magnetic self-contained thermochromic system with convenient temperature range
2019
A new ionic liquid with sugar-based ligand has been prepared and used to coordinate cobalt(II), at low loading, in an ionic liquid solution. The system obtained reveals magnetic switching and marked thermochromism in solution/polymer films over a convenient temperature range (20–60 °C). This system is self-contained, devoid of any volatile substances, and reproducible over multiple thermal cycles. The colour change can be attributed to a change in the coordination geometry from octahedral (pink) at room temperature to tetrahedral (blue) on warming, monitored by 59Co NMR spectroscopy, which was used for the first time to study the change. This material may find applications in stimuli-respon…
Preparation and Thermochromic Switching between Phosphorescence and Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence of Mononuclear Copper(I) Complexes
2020
Instructive, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly laboratory syntheses of two highly luminescent copper(I) complexes CuI(PPh3)2(pyR) (pyR = pyridine, 4-cyanopyridine) are described for second-year/upper-division undergraduate inorganic chemistry students. Both complexes exhibit bright thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) at ambient temperature and phosphorescence at low temperature. The laboratory experiments familiarize the students with mechanochemical syntheses, cluster and complex formation, ligand substituent effects, and the fascinating phenomenon of luminescence thermochromism.
