Hybrid electrochemical/electrochromic Cu(II) ion sensor prototype based on PANI/ITO-electrode
2017
Abstract Conducting polymer polyaniline (PANI) based electrochromic films were electrochemically synthesized on indium tin oxide (ITO) covered glass electrodes and their electrochromic performances were investigated by spectroscopic methods before and after the incubation in Cu(II) ion containing aqueous solution. Chemical structure of synthesized PANI layer was evaluated by FTIR. The electrochromic performance of PANI film was determined by measuring of spectroscopic signals before and after the incubation of PANI film coated electrode in Cu(II) ion containing solution. During the change of potential, which was applied to PANI-modified electrode, the colour of PANI thin film turned from gr…
Linear and Angular Distyrylpyrazines with Terminal Donor Groups: Synthesis, Solvatochromism, and Acidochromism of the Electronic Spectra
2011
A series of linear and angular distyrylpyrazines and lateral donor groups has been prepared by aldol condensation between dimethylpyrazines and the appropriate aromatic aldehyde. The optical absorption and emission properties of these systems were studied in different solvents and media. The materials display a strong solvatochromism of the emission that is reflected by large red shifts of their fluorescence emission maxima on increasing the solvent polarity. This behaviour suggests a highly polar emitting state, which is characteristic of compounds that undergo an internal charge transfer upon excitation. Upon protonation, the UV-vis spectra are altered, and the fluorescence intensity of t…
Strong, Rapid and Reversible Photochromic Response of Nb doped TiO2 Nanocrystal Colloids in Hole Scavenging Media
2020
Understanding photochromicity is essential for developing new means of modulating the optical properties and optical response of materials. Here, we report on the synthesis and exciting new photochromic behavior of Nb5+ doped TiO2 nanoparticle colloids (NCs). We find that in hole scavenging media, Nb5+ doping significantly improves the photochromic response time of TiO2 nanoparticles. In the infrared regime, Nb-doped TiO2 NCs exhibit an order of magnitude faster photoresponse kinetics than the pristine TiO2. Enhanced photochromic response is observed in the visible light regime as well. The transmittance of Nb-doped TiO2 NCs drops to 10% in less than 2 minutes when irradiated by UV light in…
Changes in the local structure of nanocrystalline electrochromic films of hydrated nickel vanadium oxide upon ozone-induced coloration
2005
Hydrated thin films of nickel vanadium oxide (Ni1−xVxOy), made by reactive DC magnetron sputtering, were studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ni and V K-edges using synchrotron radiation. The XANES signals were analysed within the full-multiple-scattering formalism, whereas EXAFS data were modelled within the multi-shell multiple-scattering approach. We found that transparent films exhibit a nanocrystalline NiO-type structure with homogeneous distribution of V ions substituting Ni ions. Exposure of the films to ozone resulted in dark brown coloration associated with an appearance of Ni3+ ions and accompanied by a modification of the local electronic and atomic structures of the V…
Supramolecular control of liquid crystals by doping with halogen-bonding dyes
2017
Introducing photochromic or polymeric dopants into nematic liquid crystals is a well-established method to create stimuli-responsive photonic materials with the ability to "control light with light". Herein, we demonstrate a new material design concept by showing that specific supramolecular interactions between the host liquid crystal and the guest dopants enhance the optical performance of the doped liquid crystals. By varying the type and strength of the dopant-host interaction, the phase-transition temperature, the order parameter of the guest molecules, and the diffraction signal in response to interference irradiation, can be accurately engineered. Our concept points out the potential…
Li intercalation in transparent Ti–Ce oxide films: Energetics and ion dynamics
1997
Films of Ti dioxide, mixed Ti–Ce oxide, and Ce dioxide were produced by reactive dc magnetron sputtering. Electrochemical lithiation was probed by chronopotentiometry, cyclic voltammetry together with optical transmittance recording, and impedance spectroscopy. Evidence was found for inserted electrons being accommodated in Ce 4f states; this contention was supported by preliminary results from x-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy. These electrons do not produce luminous electrochromism. The variation of the chemical diffusion coefficient of Li, with film composition and Li content, was also studied.
Use of RGB digital video analysis to study electrochemical processes involving color changes
2017
Color changes on an electrode surface during the course of electrochemical processes were monitored by in situ digital video recording. The evolution of standard red, green and blue (sRGB) intensity channels extracted from digital images showed a close relationship with the electrochemical processes taking place. In particular, the derivative of the sRGB mean intensity with respect to time (dI−/dt) gave useful insights into the electrochemical mechanism. The standard deviation (std) of the sRGB intensity provided information about the color homogeneity of the studied region on the electrode surface. We selected poly(o-toluidine) electrochromism on a transparent electrode and anodic copper d…
Light-responsive hybrid material based on luminescent core-shell quantum dots and steroidal organogel
2016
We report the synthesis of a smart novel hybrid with reversible photoswitchable luminescence properties modulated by light. The combination of a low molecular weight organogelator (LMOG) and CdSe/ZnS core-shell semiconductor nanoparticles capped with trioctylphosphine oxide ligands produces a luminescent, stable and transparent material. Modulation of the luminescence properties was successfully achieved using a diarylethene photochromic compound, with good resistance to fatigue ca. 22 cycles. Interestingly, the morphology of the organogel fibers was preserved in the hybrid, while a partial luminescence quenching of the nanoparticle was observed. This material could have implication for on-…
Mesomorphic and electrooptical properties of viologens based on non-symmetric alkyl/polyfluoroalkyl functionalization and on an oxadiazolyl-extended …
2019
Two different sets of ionic liquid crystals based on bistriflimide salts of non-symmetrically substituted polyfluorinated bipyridinium (viologens) and bent symmetrically substituted dialkyl-oxadiazolyl-bipyridinium have been synthesized, in order to study the effect on the mesomorphic and electrooptical properties of the non-symmetric functionalization (alkyl chain and fluoroalkyl chains of different lengths) on the two pyridinium rings and additionally the effect of a bent conjugated spacer among the two pyridinium units of the viologen. POM and DSC characterization show that the synthesized salts have a mesomorphic and, in some cases, polymesomorphic behaviour in a wide thermal range, als…
