From Type II string theory towards BSM/dark sector physics

2016

Four-dimensional compactifications of string theory provide a controlled set of possible gauge representations accounting for BSM particles and dark sector components. In this review, constraints from perturbative Type II string compactifications in the geometric regime are discussed in detail and then compared to results from heterotic string compactifications and non-perturbative/non-geometric corners. As a prominent example, an open string realization of the QCD axion is presented. The status of deriving the associated low-energy effective action in four dimensions is discussed and open avenues of major phenomenological importance are highlighted. As examples, a mechanism of closed strin…

Determination of the QCD coupling from ALEPHτdecay data

2016

We present a comprehensive study of the determination of the strong coupling from $\tau$ decay, using the most recent release of the experimental ALEPH data. We critically review all theoretical strategies used in previous works and put forward various novel approaches which allow to study complementary aspects of the problem. We investigate the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods, trying to uncover their potential hidden weaknesses and test the stability of the obtained results under slight variations of the assumed inputs. We perform several determinations, using different methodologies, and find a very consistent set of results. All determinations are in excellent agree…

Multiple polylogarithms with algebraic arguments and the two-loop EW-QCD Drell-Yan master integrals

2020

We consider Feynman integrals with algebraic leading singularities and total differentials in $\epsilon\,\mathrm{d}\ln$ form. We show for the first time that it is possible to evaluate integrals with singularities involving unrationalizable roots in terms of conventional multiple polylogarithms, by either parametric integration or matching the symbol. As our main application, we evaluate the two-loop master integrals relevant to the $\alpha \alpha_s$ corrections to Drell-Yan lepton pair production at hadron colliders. We optimize our functional basis to allow for fast and stable numerical evaluations in the physical region of phase space.

Ghost dynamics in the soft gluon limit

2021

We present a detailed study of the dynamics associated with the ghost sector of quenched QCD in the Landau gauge, where the relevant dynamical equations are supplemented with key inputs originating from large-volume lattice simulations. In particular, we solve the coupled system of Schwinger-Dyson equations that governs the evolution of the ghost dressing function and the ghost-gluon vertex, using as input for the gluon propagator lattice data that have been cured from volume and discretization artifacts. In addition, we explore the soft gluon limit of the same system, employing recent lattice data for the three-gluon vertex that enters in one of the diagrams defining the Schwinger-Dyson eq…

Unraveling the organization of the QCD tapestry

2015

I review some key aspects of the ongoing progress in our understanding of the infrared dynamics of the QCD Green's functions, derived from the close synergy between Schwinger-Dyson equations and lattice simulations. Particular attention is dedicated to the elaborate nonperturbative mechanisms that endow the fundamental degrees of freedom (quarks and gluons) with dynamical masses. In addition, the recently established connection between the effective interaction obtained from the gauge sector of the theory and that needed for the veracious description of the ground-state properties of hadrons is briefly presented.

Evolution of the $B$-Meson Light-Cone Distribution Amplitude in Laplace Space

2020

The $B$-meson light-cone distribution amplitude is a central quantity governing non-perturbative hadronic dynamics in exclusive $B$ decays. We show that the information needed to describe such processes at leading power in $\Lambda_{\rm QCD}/m_b$ is most directly contained in its Laplace transform $\tilde\phi_+(\eta)$. We derive the renormalization-group (RG) equation satisfied by this function and present its exact solution. We express the RG-improved QCD factorization theorem for the decay $B^-\to\gamma\ell^-\bar\nu$ in terms of $\tilde\phi_+(\eta)$ and show that it is explicitly independent of the factorization scale. We propose an unbiased parameterization of $\tilde\phi_+(\eta)$ in ter…

Massless bound-state excitations and the Schwinger mechanism in QCD

2011

The gauge invariant generation of an effective gluon mass proceeds through the well-known Schwinger mechanism, whose key dynamical ingredient is the nonperturbative formation of longitudinally coupled massless bound-state excitations. These excitations introduce poles in the vertices of the theory, in such a way as to maintain the Slavnov-Taylor identities intact in the presence of massive gluon propagators. In the present work we first focus on the modifications induced to the nonperturbative three-gluon vertex by the inclusion of massless two-gluon bound-states into the kernels appearing in its skeleton-expansion. Certain general relations between the basic building blocks of these bound-…

Gluon and ghost propagators in the Landau gauge: Deriving lattice results from Schwinger-Dyson equations

2008

We show that the application of a novel gauge invariant truncation scheme to the Schwinger-Dyson equations of QCD leads, in the Landau gauge, to an infrared finite gluon propagator and a divergent ghost propagator, in qualitative agreement with recent lattice data.

Impact of the pion mass on nonpower expansion for QCD observables

2005

A new set of functions, which form a basis of the massive nonpower expansion for physical observables, is presented in the framework of the analytic approach to QCD at the four-loop level. The effects due to the $\pi$ meson mass are taken into account by employing the dispersion relation for the Adler function. The nonvanishing pion mass substantially modifies the functional expansion at low energies. Specifically, the spacelike functions are affected by the mass of the $\pi$ meson in the infrared domain below few GeV, whereas the timelike functions acquire characteristic plateaulike behavior below the two-pion threshold. At the same time, all the appealing features of the massless nonpower…

Large Effects from Small QCD Instantons: Making Soft Bombs at Hadron Colliders

2020

It is a common belief that the last missing piece of the Standard Model of particles physics was found with the discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider. However, there remains a major prediction of quantum tunnelling processes mediated by instanton solutions in the Yang-Mills theory, that is still untested in the Standard Model. The direct experimental observation of instanton-induced processes, which are a consequence of the non-trivial vacuum structure of the Standard Model and of quantum tunnelling in QFT, would be a major breakthrough in modern particle physics. In this paper, we present for the first time a full calculation of QCD instanton-induced processes in proton…
