The newly developed high-resolution and magnification endoscopes offer features that allow more and new mucosal details to be seen. They are commonly used in conjunction with chromoendoscopy. The analysis of mucosal surface details is beginning to resemble histologic examination. More accurate recognition of small flat and depressed neoplastic lesions is possible. Endoscopic prediction of neoplastic and nonneoplastic tissue is possible by analysis of surface architecture of the mucosa, which influences the endoscopic management. Standardization of reagents and methods used in cytological and histological practice with emphasis on dyes, stains and chromogenic reagents

The need for the standardization of reagents and methods used in the histology laboratory is demonstrated. After definitions of dyes, stains, and chromogenic reagents, existing standards and standards organizations are discussed. This is followed by practical instructions on how to standardize dyes and stains through the preparation of reference materials and the development of chromatographic methods. An overview is presented of the problems concerned with standardization of the Romanowsky-Giemsa stain for cytological and histological application. Finally, the problem of how to convince routine dye and stain users of the need for standardization in their histology laboratories is discussed.
A new simple chromo-fluorogenic probe for NO2 detection in air.

[EN] A new chromo-fluorogenic probe, consisting of a biphenyl derivative containing both a silylbenzyl ether and a N,N-dimethylamino group, for NO2 detection in the gas phase has been developed. A clear colour change from colourless to yellow together with an emission quenching was observed when the probe reacted with NO2. A limit of detection to the naked eye of about 0.1 ppm was determined and the system was successfully applied to the detection of NO2 in realistic atmospheric conditions.

The prognosis for patients with malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract is strictly dependent on the early detection of premalignant and malignant lesions. At present, endoscopy can be performed with new, powerful high-resolution or magnifying endoscopes. Comparable to the rapid development in chip technology, the optic features of the newly designed endoscopes offer resolutions that allow new mucosal surface details to be seen. The current rise in international concern over criminal terrorist attacks via chemical warfare (CW) agents has resulted in an increasing interest in the detection of these lethal chemicals.
