The Determinants of Living with Long-Term Conditions: An International Cross-Sectional Study
2021
It is essential that healthcare and social professionals understand the daily lives of people with chronic diseases, and the variables that influence them. The aim of this study was to identify the determinants influencing the process of living with long-term conditions. To investigate this, an observational, international, cross-sectional study was carried out. A consecutive sample of 1788 Spanish-speaking population living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic heart failure and type 2 diabetes mellitus were included. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression models were performed. The linear regression models identified that social support (β = 0.39, p <
IκB kinase-driven nuclear factor-κB activation in patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
2011
Background Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) is a transcriptional factor of different inflammatory patterns involved in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that is tightly controlled by IκB kinase (IKK) complex. Objective We investigated the dysregulation of IKK-driven NF-κB activation in patients with asthma and COPD. Methods We assessed IKKα and IKKβ expression and activation, their regulation by glucocorticosteroids, and their involvement in IL-8 synthesis in PBMCs isolated from asthmatic patients, healthy smokers (HSs), patients with COPD, and control subjects. PBMCs from control subjects were stimulated with TNF-α and cigarette smoke extract in the presence or absence of fl…
Prevalence and 30-Day Mortality in Hospitalized Patients With Covid-19 and Prior Lung Diseases.
2021
Patients with pre-existing respiratory diseases in the setting of COVID-19 may have a greater risk of severe complications and even death.A retrospective, multicenter, cohort study with 5847 COVID-19 patients admitted to hospitals. Patients were separated in two groups, with/without previous lung disease. Evaluation of factors associated with survival and secondary composite end-point such as ICU admission and respiratory support, were explored.1,271 patients (22%) had a previous lung disease, mostly COPD. All-cause mortality occurred in 376 patients with lung disease (29.5%) and in 819 patients without (17.9%) (Previous lung disease is a risk factor for mortality in patients with COVID-19.…
Smoking cessation opportunities in severe mental illness (tobacco intensive motivational and estimate risk — TIMER—): study protocol for a randomized…
2019
There is an increased risk of premature death in people with severe mental illness (SMI). Respiratory disorders and cardiovascular disease are leading causes of increased mortality rates in these patients, and tobacco consumption remains the most preventable risk factor involved. Developing new tools to motivate patients towards cessation of smoking is a high priority. Information on the motivational value of giving the lung age and prevention opportunities is unknown in this high-risk population. In the context of community care, screening and early detection of lung damage could potentially be used, together with mobile technology, in order to produce a prevention message, which may provi…

Deep semantic lung segmentation for tracking potential pulmonary perfusion biomarkers in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): The multi‐ethn…
2019
Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Identification of imaging biomarkers for phenotyping is necessary for future treatment and therapy monitoring. However, translation of visual analytic pipelines into clinics or their use in large-scale studies is significantly slowed by time-consuming postprocessing steps. Purpose To implement an automated tool chain for regional quantification of pulmonary microvascular blood flow in order to reduce analysis time and user variability. Study type Prospective. Population In all, 90 MRI scans of 63 patients, of which 31 had a COPD with a mean Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung …
Cigarette smoke affects the onco-suppressor DAB2IP expression in bronchial epithelial cells of COPD patients
2019
AbstractCigarette smoke is a risk factor for COPD and lung cancer. In cancer, epigenetic modifications affect the expression of Enhancer of Zester Homolog 2 (EZH2), and silenced disabled homolog 2 interacting protein gene (DAB2IP) (onco-suppressor gene) by Histone H3 tri-methylation in lysine 27 (H3K27me3). In“ex vivo”studies, we assessed EZH2, H3K27me3 and DAB2IP immunoreactivity in bronchial epithelial cells from COPD patients (smokers, ex-smokers), Smoker and control subjects. In“in vitro” experiments we studied the effect of cigarette smoke extract (CSE) on EZH2/H3K27me3/DAB2IP expression, apoptosis, invasiveness, and vimentin expression in 16HBE, primary cells, and lung cancer cell lin…
