Summary Background Chronic constipation is common in the general population. Some studies have shown that in children cow's milk protein hypersensitivity can cause chronic constipation unresponsive to laxative treatment. Proctitis and constipation: A symptom of food allergy?

Abstract Allergic proctitis can occur in infants and children. It is expressed by feces streaked with blood without other apparent signs. More than 50% of these patients are being breast-fed. Recently, it has been found that a particular symptom of allergic proctitis is constipation, and it is a major cause of consultations in pediatric gastroenterology departments. Constipation severity is associated with productivity losses and healthcare utilization in patients with chronic constipation

OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the association between constipation severity, productivity losses and healthcare utilization in a national sample of Italian patients with chronic non-organic constipation (CC). METHODS: We enrolled 878 outpatients with CC. Clinical and demographic data were collected by physicians during clinical examinations. Patients completed a self-administered questionnaire (Patient Assessment of Constipation-Symptoms, PAC-SYM; Work Productivity and Activity Impairment; healthcare utilization, and Symptoms Checklist 90 Revised - Somatization Scale, SCL-90 R).
