2021
Simple Summary The Rheumatoid Arthritis Foot Disease Activity Index (RADAI-F5) is the first questionnaire designed to check the level of involvement in the feet of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. It is a validated and reliable five-question questionnaire in English. It is also considered suitable for clinical use. We aim was to translate and validate the Spanish version. The findings of this research suggest that is a valid, strong and trustworthy clinimetric tool that appropriately applies to the Spanish community and can be managed as a whole or in terms of its respective dimensions, such as arthritis activity in the foot, joint tenderness and swelling, and foot arthritis pain sub-sca…
General Aspects of Thoracic Anesthesia
2020
Thoracic anesthesia, a fascinating subspecialty, provides perioperative medicine for a spectrum of dynamically evolving surgical procedures ranging from classical thoracotomies to minimally invasive and ultra-minimally invasive video or robotically assisted procedures. Its core mission is to provide optimal surgical conditions by deflating the operative lung while providing adequate oxygenation and avoiding injury to the ventilated lung. Thoracic anesthesia also provides preoperative care to achieve best possible health status before surgery and improves postoperative recovery by providing means of pain therapy and enhanced recovery following some of the most painful procedures in patients …
Machine-learned selection of psychological questionnaire items relevant to the development of persistent pain after breast cancer surgery
2018
Background: Prevention of persistent pain after breast cancer surgery, via early identification of patients at high risk, is a clinical need. Psychological factors are among the most consistently proposed predictive parameters for the development of persistent pain. However, repeated use of long psychological questionnaires in this context may be exhaustive for a patient and inconvenient in everyday clinical practice. Methods: Supervised machine learning was used to create a short form of questionnaires that would provide the same predictive performance of pain persistence as the full questionnaires in a cohort of 1000 women followed up for 3 yr after breast cancer surgery. Machine-learned …
Opioid metabolism and clinical aspects.
2015
Opioids are are commonly used for the management of acute and chronic pain. Opioids have different physicochemical and pharmacokinetic characteristics, which explain the profound changes in the clinical effect in several clinical conditions. Pharmacokinetics influences the opioid response affecting bioavailability, production of metabolites with residual clinical activity, and elimination. Generality of opioid metabolism and clinical implications for specific opioids in different clinical conditions were reviewed to bridge the gap between pharmacokinetics and clinical response. The knowledge of opioid metabolism is essential, particularly for older and complicated patients who receive multi…
Effects of pilates exercise programs in people with chronic low back pain: a systematic review
2015
The Pilates method has recently become a fast-growing popular way of exercise recommended for healthy individuals and those engaged in rehabilitation. Several published studies have examined the effects of Pilates method in people with chronic low back pain (LBP). The objective of this study is to describe and provide an extensive overview of the scientific literature comparing the effectiveness of the Pilates method on pain and disability in patients with chronic nonspecific LBP. The study is based on the data from the following sources: MEDLINE-NLM, MEDLINE-EBSCO, Scopus Elsevier, Cochrane, DOAJ, SciELO, and PLOSONE. Original articles and systematic reviews of adults with chronic nonspeci…

Revising the negative meaning of chronic pain : A phenomenological study
2014
Objectives Chronic pain may disable the body, depress the mind and ruin the quality of life. The aim of this study was to use the participants’ personal experiences to explore the meaning of the experience of chronic pain and to find successful ways to manage chronic pain. Methods Thirty-four participants with chronic pain were interviewed. The transcribed interviews were analysed using Giorgi’s phenomenological method consisting of four phases: (1) reading the transcriptions several times, (2) discriminating meaning units, (3) collecting meaning units into groups and (4) the synthesis. Results The participants stated that the key to managing chronic pain was to reconsider the individual me…
“Selling” chronic pain: physiotherapists’ lived experiences of communicating the diagnosis of chronic nonspecific lower back pain to their patients
2019
Introduction: Chronic nonspecific lower back pain (CNSLBP) is a common musculoskeletal condition which can be a source of significant distress and disability for patients. Approaches to managing CNSLBP have been explored in healthcare literature, as has the importance of communication in physiotherapy practice. However, no previous studies have explored clinicians’ experiences of communicating their understanding of this diagnosis to their patients. Methods: A qualitative research design, using hermeneutic phenomenological methodology, was employed. Five participants were purposively recruited for the research and data collected via semi-structured interviews. Interpretative phenomenologica…
