The term "Bell Beaker", in the strict sense, designates a ceramic beaker form with an S-shaped profile that gives it the shape of an inverted bell. This type of drinking-vessel is characterized by both its very particular pattern of decoration and by the generally skilled execution of that decoration. The archaeological site of the Pré-du-Plancher is located to the east of Dijon (Burgundy, Côte-d’Or), at the footof a limestone hill in the Basmont valley. This site, dated from the late Bronze Age, is the first to include a stratigraphicalsequence for this period in Burgundy. The settlement comprises of three buildings and several dumps containing potteryfinds. The study of the pottery as well as the site’s stratigraphy clearly identifies three chronological periods dating from Late Bronze Age IIb to Late Bronze age IIIa (French chronology) or Hallstatt A2 / B1 (German/Swiss chronology). Forest fires are a key disturbance in boreal forests, and characteristics of fire regimes are among the most important factors explaining the variation in forest structure and species composition. The occurrence of fire is connected with climate, but earlier, mostly local-scale studies in the northern European boreal forests have provided little insight into fire-climate relationship before the modern fire suppression period. Here, we compiled annually resolved fire history, temperature, and precipitation reconstructions from eastern Fennoscandia from the mid-16th century to the end of the 19th century, a period of strong human influence on fires. Significance The variability of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) is important for the functioning of ecological and societal systems at regional to continental scales, but the long-term evolution and interannual variability of this system is not well understood. Here, we present a stable isotope–based reconstruction of ASM variability covering 4680 BCE to 2011 CE. Superimposed on a gradual drying trend, a rapid drop in mean annual precipitation (>40%) toward persistently drier conditions occurred in ∼1675 BCE. Abstract The Sumdo complex is a Permian–Triassic eclogitic metamorphic belt in south-east Tibet, which marks the location of a suture zone that separates the northern and southern Lhasa terranes. An integrated geochronological and petrological study of a mafic eclogite from the complex has constrained its tectonometamorphic history and provides a case study of zircon growth in eclogite as a product of prograde dissolution–precipitation. In situ U–Pb geochronology indicates that the eclogite contains a single population of zircon with a crystallisation age of 273.6 ± 2.8 Ma. The underwater archaeological campaigns carried out over twenty years, from 1970 to 1990, in the Saône valley, more particularly in the area of Chalon-sur-Saône, first by Louis Bonnamour and then by Annie Dumont, generated a considerable quantity of data concerning settlements, located on fjords or river banks. In 2000, the preventive excavation of the Ensisheim/Reguisheimerfeld site (Haut-Rhin), carried out by the ANTEA SARL company, brought to light 87 funerary structures belonging to a cremation necropolis dating from the beginning of the Late Bronze Age (around 1350-1050 BC). Following study of the material, 3 successive chronological phases and a possible cultural "faciès" centred on the bend in the Rhine at Basel, Switzerland, were distinguished. The archaeo-anthropological study of the burnt bones revealed, among other things, the existence of a large number of multiple graves and of socially immature members of the society, phenomena rarely observed in the region. Antarctic erosion history reconstructed by Terre Adélie moraine geochronology

AbstractWe report apatite fission-track and 10Be terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (TCN) dating of 14 moraine boulders originating from inland Terre Adélie, East Antarctica. These data show cooling of the Proterozoic Terre Adélie craton at < ~120°C between 350 and 300 Ma, suggesting > 4 km temperate glacial erosion during the Late Palaeozoic Ice Age, followed by nearly null Mesozoic erosion and low glacial erosion (< 2 km) in the Cenozoic. Based on glacial flux maps, the origin of the boulders may be located ~400 km upstream. Preliminary TCN (10Be) datings of moraine boulders cluster within the last 30 ka. Quantifying the P-T-t conditions of north-south Lhasa terrane accretion: new insight into the pre-Himalayan architecture of the Tibetan plateau

An integrated field, petrological and geochronological study of the Basong Tso region of south-eastern Tibet has constrained the timing and P–T conditions of north–south Lhasa terrane accretion and provides new insight into the tectonothermal evolution of the Tibetan plateau. Two distinct high-grade metamorphic belts are recognized in the region: a southern belt (the Basong Tso complex) that consists of sheared schist and orthogneiss; and a northern belt (the Zhala complex) that comprises paragneiss and granite.
