Effects on intermittent postural control in people with Parkinson's due to a dual task.

2021

Objectives The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of performing a dual task on the sway density plot parameters in Parkinson's disease and control subjects. Methods A cross-sectional design was used to establish differences in the mean peak, mean time, and mean distance between a group with Parkinson's disease and a control group without Parkinson's disease. The subjects performed, in a unique measurement session, two trials under three different randomized conditions: i. eyes open, ii. eyes closed, and iii. Eyes open with foam base. One trial was performed as a single task (i.e., the subjects completed one of the balance test), while the other trial was performed as a du…

Clinical Approach to Vascular Calcification in Patients With Non-dialysis Dependent Chronic Kidney Disease: Mineral-Bone Disorder-Related Aspects

2021

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with a very high morbimortality, mainly from cardiovascular origin, and CKD is currently considered in the high- or very high risk- cardiovascular risk category. CKD-mineral and bone disorders (CKD-MBDs), including vascular and/or valvular calcifications, are also associated with these poor outcomes. Vascular calcification (VC) is very prevalent (both intimal and medial), even in non-dialysis dependent patients, with a greater severity and more rapid progression. Simple X-ray based-scores such as Adragão's (AS) are useful prognostic tools and AS (even AS based on hand-X-ray only) may be superior to the classic Kauppila's score when evaluating non-d…

Microwave experiments on electromagnetic evanescent waves and tunneling effect

1993

A set of experiments is described to measure the decay of electromagnetic evanescent waves and the tunneling effect through an airgap. The experiments are performed using microwaves and have been designed to be carried out by third year students of physics. The proposed experimental setup can be regarded as a quantum mechanical simulator for the one‐dimensional motion of a particle.

Is Digital Literacy Improving Science Education?

2015

Mass media, and especially digital media, have become an important tool of literacy and have increased their use in classrooms for educational purposes. This is of great interest in scientific literacy and Brossard and Shanahan (2006) developed an instrument to evaluate the understanding of scientific terms and basic science concepts. In this quantitative study we analyse the relationship between Spanish digital mass media and scientific literacy in pre-service pri- mary teachers (N = 189). Results showed that these university students have a term knowledge level lower than the one found by Brossard and Shanahan in the USA. On the other hand, conceptual knowledge was not correlated at all to t…

ESR observations of paramagnetic centers in intrinsic hydrogenated microcrystalline silicon

2002

Paramagnetic centers in hydrogenated microcrystalline silicon, mc-Si:H have been studied using dark and light-induced electron-spin resonance ~ESR!. In dark ESR measurements only one center is observed. The g values obtained empirically from powder-pattern line-shape simulations are gi52.0096 and g’52.0031. We suggest that this center may be due to defects in the crystalline phase. During illumination at low temperatures, an additional ESR signal appears. This signal is best described by two powder patterns indicating the presence of two centers. One center is asymmetric (gi51.999, g’51.996), while the other is characterized by large, unresolved broadening such that unique g values cannot b…

Particle Physics in High School: A Diagnose Study

2016

Abstract The science learning process improves when the contents are connected to students' lives. Particle physics has had a great impact in our society in the last years and has changed the theoretical picture about matter fundamental dynamics. Thus, we think that academic contents about matter components and interactions should be updated. With this study we aim to characterize the level of knowledge of high school students about this topic. We built a test with questions about classical atomic models, particle physics, recent discoveries, social implications and students opinions about it. Contrary to our first suspicion, students' answers show a high variability. They have new physics …

Science, scientists and literature : the role of literature in promoting science and technology

2015

Science and technology in terms of innovative ideas and technological advances has been reflected by numerous well-known and representative literary works. This was first witnessed at the beginning of the nineteenth century, which marked the most notorious social impact of scientific activity. Here, we show how the debate between science and humanities is unfruitful, because the mutual influence of these two ways of thinking shows that they are equally human and have constantly influenced each other, and even more so today. In this article we discuss countless examples of novels and stories influenced by new scientific ideas, and also some cases where literary creativity has provided words …
