Densely packed semiflexible macromolecules in a rigid spherical capsule

2018

The ordering of semiflexible polymers with persistence length lp and contour length L confined in a sphere of radius R is studied by molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained model. Monomer densities are chosen where the corresponding bulk lyotropic solution or melt is a well-ordered nematic, and purely repulsive walls of the rigid confining sphere are considered. It is found that polymers close to the walls are bent according to the curvature of the confining spheres with all their monomers in a few layers parallel to the sphere surface, whereas the remaining macromolecules closer to the sphere center have one chain end and their center of mass far from the surface. The latter cha…

Fe3O4@Au@mSiO2 as an enhancing nanoplatform for Rose Bengal photodynamic activity

2017

A novel nanoplatform composed of three types of materials with different functionalities, specifically core-shell Fe3O4@Au nanoparticles encapsulated near the outer surface of mesoporous silica (mSiO2) nanoparticles, has been successfully synthesised and used to enhance the efficiency of a photosensitiser, namely Rose Bengal, in singlet oxygen generation. Fe3O4 is responsible for the unusual location of the Fe3O4@Au nanoparticle, while the plasmonic shell acts as an optical antenna. In addition, the mesoporous silica matrix firmly encapsulates Rose Bengal by chemical bonding inside the pores, thus guaranteeing its photostability, and in turn making the nanosystem biocompatible. Moreover, th…

Nucleant layer effect on nanocolumnar ZnO films grown by electrodeposition

2013

Different ZnO nanostructured films were electrochemically grown, using an aqueous solution based on ZnCl2, on three types of transparent conductive oxides grow on commercial ITO (In2O3:Sn)-covered glass substrates: (1) ZnO prepared by spin coating, (2) ZnO prepared by direct current magnetron sputtering, and (3) commercial ITO-covered glass substrates. Although thin, these primary oxide layers play an important role on the properties of the nanostructured films grown on top of them. Additionally, these primary oxide layers prevent direct hole combination when used in optoelectronic devices. Structural and optical characterizations were carried out by scanning electron microscopy, atomic for…

Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles under high pressure

2015

We report by the first time a high pressure X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy study of cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles carried out at room temperature up to 17 GPa. In contrast with previous studies of nanoparticles, which proposed the transition pressure to be reduced from 20–27 GPa to 7.5–12.5 GPa (depending on particle size), we found that cobalt ferrite nanoparticles remain in the spinel structure up to the highest pressure covered by our experiments. In addition, we report the pressure dependence of the unit-cell parameter and Raman modes of the studied sample. We found that under quasi-hydrostatic conditions, the bulk modulus of the nanoparticles (B0 = 204 GPa) is consid…

Long-cavity all-fiber ring laser actively mode locked with an in-fiber bandpass acousto-optic modulator.

2013

We demonstrate low-frequency active mode locking of an erbium-doped all-fiber ring laser. As the mode locker, we used a new in-fiber bandpass acousto-optic modulator showing 74% modulation depth, 3.7 dB power insertion losses, 4.5 nm of optical bandwidth, and 20 dB of nonresonant light suppression. The laser generates 330 ps mode-locked pulses over a 10 ns pedestal, at a 1.538 MHz frequency, with 130 mW of pump power. Fil: Cuadrado Laborde, Christian Ariel. Universidad de Valencia; España. Unzipping Nucleoside Channels by Means of Alcohol Disassembly

2013

Gold nanoparticles capped with simple adenosine derivatives can form colloidal aggregates in nonpolar solvents. Theoretical calculations indicate the formation of organic channels by the supramolecular assembly of the nanoparticles by means of hydrogen bonds between the adenine moieties. The aggregates were only negligibly sensitive to nPrOH, iPrOH, and tBuOH, whereas some showed a similar response to MeOH and EtOH, and others showed high selectivity toward MeOH. DNA nucleoside derivatives (1-(2-deoxy-β-D-ribofuranosyl)-5-methyluracil and 2′,3′-O-isopropylideneadenosine) as well as thymine and other aromatic compounds such as pyrene derivatives (pyrene, 1-chloropyrene, 1-hydroxypyrene, (1-p…

Improved Regioselectivity in Pyrazole Formation through the Use of Fluorinated Alcohols as Solvents: Synthesis and Biological Activity of Fluorinated…

2008

The preparation of N-methylpyrazoles is usually accomplished through reaction of a suitable 1,3-diketone with methylhydrazine in ethanol as the solvent. This strategy, however, leads to the formation of regioisomeric mixtures of N-methylpyrazoles, which sometimes are difficult to separate. We have determined that the use of fluorinated alcohols such as 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) and 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) as solvents dramatically increases the regioselectivity in the pyrazole formation, and we have used this modification in a straightforward synthesis of fluorinated analogs of Tebufenpyrad with acaricide activity. Signals of demographic expansion in Drosophila virilis

2008

Background. The pattern of genetic variation within and among populations of a species is strongly affected by its phylogeographic history. Analyses based on putatively neutral markers provide data from which past events, such as population expansions and colonizations, can be inferred. Drosophila virilis is a cosmopolitan species belonging to the virilis group, where divergence times between different phylads go back to the early Miocene. We analysed mitochondrial DNA sequence variation among 35 Drosophila virilis strains covering the species' range in order to detect demographic events that could be used to understand the present characteristics of the species, as well as its differences …

2,3,9- and 2,3,11-Trisubstituted tetrahydroprotoberberines as D2 dopaminergic ligands

2013

Dopamine-mediated neurotransmission plays an important role in relevant psychiatric and neurological disorders. Nowadays, there is an enormous interest in the development of new dopamine receptors (DR) acting drugs as potential new targets for the treatment of schizophrenia or Parkinson's disease. Previous studies have revealed that isoquinoline compounds such as tetrahydroisoquinolines (THIQs) and tetrahydroprotoberberines (THPBs) can behave as selective D-2 dopaminergic alkaloids since they share structural similarities with dopamine. In the present study we have synthesized eleven 2,3,9- and 2,3,11-trisubstituted THPB compounds (six of them are described for the first time) and evaluated…

Structural and magnetic characterization of a 1D chain of [Co(II)2(mu-aqua)(mu-carboxylate)2] strung cores.

2009

A novel 1D chain built up from stringing of [Co2(μ-OH 2)(μ-O2CC(CH3)3)2] units with the bridging 2,2′-bipyrimidine ligand has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The chains are well isolated from each other by the bulky tert-butyl groups of the carboxlyates and show an alternating zigzag configuration for the Co(II) metallic centres. DC magnetic measurements show anti-ferromagnetic coupling, Jca.-3 cm-1 between adjacent Co(II) ions along the chain. Noticeably, good data fitting was obtained by means of simple models that neglect any kind of first order orbital contribution to the spin ground state, which is normally observed in Co(II) complexes. These results were further confi…
