Translation as alchemy: the aesthetics of multilingualism in film

The aim of this paper is to explore the aesthetics of multilingualism in film. We start with a discussion of translation strategy in several films and continue with two case studies based on Azur et Asmar (2006) by Michel Ocelot, on the one hand, and Nostalghia (1983) and Offret (1986) by Andrei Tarkovsky, on the other. Our analysis does not involve a comparison between the original dialogues or monologues and their translations into one or several languages, but, rather, it focuses on the role of translation in film making, considering it independently from any pre-existing oral or written texts. La question de la paternité des oeuvres cinématographiques a été souvent débattue au cours des années 30. Elle fournit aujourd’hui encore au juriste et à l’historien de l’art une illustration particulièrement intéressante de la difficulté pour le droit d’appréhender ce qui fait l’essence d’une expression artistique spécifique, comme le cinéma, et en conséquence d’en déterminer les auteurs. Avant la loi de 1957, qui a reconnu la paternité du metteur en scène, la tendance jurisprudentielle était nettement en faveur de la thèse du producteur comme auteur ou coauteur du film. Visual Representation of Urban Environment: Microraioni of Riga in Soviet Cinematography

Abstract The aim of this article is to interpret the discourse of residential areas of Riga through the films of the Soviet period and to examine essential changes in residential structure. Specific image of cinematic formal techniques is used in relation to the urban. The results of movie review are compared with changes in the residential development between 1945–1990. 124 movies display that residential areas are frequently portrayed in the Soviet cinema and they form an integral part of the Soviet urban perception.
