The normal circadian pattern of blood pressure: implications for treatment
2004
Blood pressure fluctuates over 24 h following a circadian rhythm that reaches a peak in the morning shortly after awakening. The onset of many acute cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events shows a synchronous cyclical pattern, with the highest incidence of morbidity and mortality in the early morning hours. Strong, although circumstantial, evidence suggests that the early morning surge in blood pressure may contribute to the onset of acute cardiovascular episodes. Sustained blood pressure control that blunts the early morning blood pressure surge may help to reduce the incidence of these events. Antihypertensive agents are needed that provide smooth and sustained blood pressure control fo…
Circadian rhythm in NO synthase I transcript expression and its photoperiodic regulation in the rat pineal gland.
2001
The photoneural regulation of nitric oxide synthase type I (NOS I) expression in the rat pineal was investigated using semiquantitative RT-PCR. NOS I transcript expression exhibited a daily rhythm with peak values during the night hours. The daily rhythm in NOS I transcript expression persisted under constant dark conditions and was abolished under constant light conditions. The extent of nocturnal NOS I expression was found to be dependent on the photoperiod. It was attenuated under 20 h light and 4 h dark (L:D 20:4) compared with 12 h light and 12 h dark (L:D 12:12). The present findings indicate that, in the rat pineal, NOS I transcript expression exhibits a true circadian rhythm. Furthe…
Inhibition of Melatonin in the Plasma of Third-Generation Male Mice under the Action of ELF Magnetic Fields
1998
The pineal gland has been considered a magnetic receptor organ that regulates circadian rhythms by means of the secretion of melatonin, a potent oncostatic agent that prevents the initiation and promotion of cancer. ELF electromagnetic radiation, similar to that generated by power lines, can alter melatonin plasma levels. To study this effect, 4 OF1 mice generations have been reared subjected to a lifelong 15 μT, 50 Hz magnetic field action. This magnetic field was generated inside a Helmholtz coil system. The concentration of melatonin in the blood has been determined on 40 male mice of the third generation by means of RIA, as they reached sexual maturity (3 months).A radical decrease, more…
Untersuchungen zur Aktivittskinetik des Isoenzymes CK-MB im Serum nach Myokardinfarkt
1978
We investigated the activity kinetics of CK-total and CK-MB in 83 patients with proven myocardial infarctions. Serial serum samples were taken at intervals of 2--6 h. The activity of isoenzym CK-MB was determined by means of the immunological inhibition method. CK-MB activity was determined in all patients. The mean peak activity of CK-MB was 65 U/l (range: 9-241 U/l). At the time of peak CK-MB activity the mean percentage CK-MB activity was 13.2% (range: 3.4--21.7%). The CK-MB activity reached its peak at 17.4 h (range: 3.0--32.5 h) after the onset of retrosternal pain. This is 1.4 h after peak CK-total activity. The mean disappearance rate constant for CK-MB (n = 31) was found to be 9.3 X…
The phototransduction cascade in the isolated chick pineal gland revisited.
2003
It is well established that the isolated chick pineal gland is directly light sensitive and that melatonin synthesis of the gland can be inhibited by exposing the gland to light during scotophase. Since not all the steps of the phototransduction cascade have been clarified to the same extent as in the retina, we have treated isolated chick pineal glands with 90 min of light during scotophase and with drugs that affect key-components of vertebrate phototransduction, i.e., cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) phosphodiesterase 6 (PDE6), cGMP levels and cGMP-gated calcium channels. The endpoint measured was the activity of the rate-limiting enzyme of melatonin synthesis, arylalkylamine N-acet…
Infradian rhythms of serotonin and serotonin‐N‐acetyltransferase in the pineal gland of male rats
1983
Abstract The present investigation was carried out to determine whether in the pineal gland of male Sprague‐Dawley rats infradian rhythms with respect to serotonin, serotonin‐N‐acetyltransferase (NAT) activity, and hydroxyindole‐O‐methyltransferase (HIOMT) can be detected. The serotonin data obtained over a period of 4 weeks and subjected to power spectral analysis suggest the presence of infradian rhythms in the range of 6 and 4.3 days. NAT activity, obtained over a period of 28 days, revealed a 7‐day‐rhythm. A second peak occurring at 2.3 days remained just below the significance limit. HIOMT activity studied over a period of 8 days showed no statistically significant differences between …
Self-reported reasons for on-duty sleepiness among commercial airline pilots
2021
Experimental and epidemiological research has shown that human sleepiness is determined especially by the circadian and homeostatic processes. The present field study examined which work-related factors airline pilots perceive as causing on-duty sleepiness during short-haul and long-haul flights. In addition, the association between the perceived reasons for sleepiness and actual sleepiness levels was examined, as well as the association between reporting inadequate sleep causing sleepiness and actual sleep-wake history. The study sample consisted of 29 long-haul (LH) pilots, 28 short-haul (SH) pilots, and 29 mixed fleet pilots (flying both SH and LH flights), each of whom participated in a…
Zirkadiane Blutdruckrhythmik bei der Präeklampsie: Ein Prädiktor für die maternale und geburtshilfliche Situation?
2003
Background Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-induced multiorganic disease. The incidence is 5 - 7 % in all pregnant women. To assess the value of circadian blood pressure rhythm in preeclamptic women, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring might be useful. The purpose of this study was to determine the predictive value of circadian blood pressure rhythm for the maternal and obstetrical outcome in patients with mild preeclampsia. Patients and methods Sixty-six patients with mild preeclampsia underwent 24-hour blood pressure monitoring between 29 and 39 weeks gestation. Twenty-eight patients with normal circadian blood pressure rhythm were compared with thirty-eight patients with suspended circadian blo…
Das Werk der inneren Uhr Zur Neuroanatomie des circadiauen Systems der Suger
1993
Many aspects of mammalian life exhibit distinct alterations throughout the 24-h cycle. Morphological, physiological, and biochemical parameters display circadian rhythms which are thought to be generated by an endogenous pacemaker and regulated by environmental factors. The morphological substrates of the endogenous circadian system have been studied extensively during the last two decades. Although knowledge is far from complete, there is general agreement that the pathways involved consist mainly of retina, hypothalamus, spinal cord, sympathetic trunk, and pineal gland. This review characterizes the anatomical structures and tracts responsible for generation and maintenance of circadian r…
