Protective effects of plasma replacement fluids on erythrocytes exposed to mechanical stress

2000

Haemoglobin release from 40 suspensions of packed red blood cells in modified fluid gelatin, 4% albumin solution, 6% hydroxyethyl starch and normal saline was investigated in vitro during circulation with a roller pump from a heart-lung machine for 120 min at a flow rate of 2.5 l.min-1 at room temperature. The lowest haemoglobin release was obtained with erythrocytes in modified fluid gelatin, whereas free haemoglobin concentrations became progressively higher with albumin, hydroxyethyl starch and normal saline [median free haemoglobin (interquartile range) after 120 min circulation: gelatin 493 (360-601) mg.l-1, albumin 692 (590-1111) mg.l-1, hydroxyethyl starch 1121 (692-1518) mg.l-1, nor…

Assessment of Skeletal Muscle Microperfusion Using MRI

2013

Blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) MRI, arterial spin labeling (ASL) and dynamic contrast enhancement (DCE) are current magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques allowing the non-invasive functional assessment of peripheral microvasculature in healthy and diseased individuals. The functional imaging of skeletal muscle microvasculature helps to understand muscular and vascular physiology and alterations of microcirculation under certain pathological conditions such as peripheral arterial occlusive disease, diabetes mellitus, chronic compartment syndrome and rheumatic disorders. BOLD MRI uses blood as an endogenous contrast agent provided by the different magnetic properties of oxy- a…

Klassifikation und Therapie von Endolecks nach endovaskulärer Behandlung von abdominellen Aortenaneurysmen

2005

This article describes the classification of endoleaks after endovascular treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms, thereby summarizing the most important problems of this endovascular technique. The correct classification of endoleaks is a prerequisite for interdisciplinary discussion. It is indispensable for professional reporting of the pathological findings and for the decision making as to the adequate treatment of endoleaks. Irrespective of the types of stent graft and property of the material, five endoleak types are defined in the literature: leakage at the anchor sites (type I); leakage due to collateral arteries (type II); defective stent grafts (type III); leakage due to porosity …

Minimalheparinisierung bei Dialysepatienten mit erhöhter Blutungsgefährdung

2008

Abstract In 78 patients (47 men, 31 women; mean age 53 [22-78] years) 174 dialyses were undertaken within one week of a bleeding episode or a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure which may cause bleeding. Minimal anticoagulation with low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) was the aim, using a biocompatible dialyser. During the dialysis coagulation was controlled by global tests (Quick value/international normalized ratio [INR], partial thromboplastin time, thrombin time, antifactor Xa activity), by molecular markers of clotting activity (thrombin-antithrombin III complex [TAT], D-dimers), as well as measurement of elastase (elastase-alpha 1-protein inhibitor complex). The LMWH dosage averaged 9…

Formation of Venous Collaterals and Regeneration in the Donor Remnant Liver: Volumetric Analysis and Three-Dimensional Visualization

2009

Abstract Purpose We sought was to quantify and visualize the regeneration of the remnant liver after living donor liver transplantation using computed tomographic (CT) data. Methods For the evaluation of preoperative and follow-up data, we developed a software assistant that was able to compute the volume growth of the remnant liver and liver territories as well as visualize the individual growth of hepatic vessels over time. The software was applied to CT data of 20 donors who underwent right hepatectomy including the middle hepatic vein with at least 3 follow-up examinations in the first year after transplantation. Results After donation of a right lobe graft, the remnant liver regenerate…

What have we learnt 50 years after the first Fontan procedure?

2020

The Fontan procedure is often the only definitive palliative surgical option for patients with a variety of complex CHD sharing in common, a single, dominant ventricle. In recent decades, imaging and therapeutic improvement have played a crucial role in those patients in whom many complications can hamper their life. After 50 years from the first procedure, heart transplantation remains the only definitive treatment for those with a failing Fontan circulation.

The Effects of Epinine on Arterial Blood Pressure and Regional Vascular Resistances in Anesthetized Rats

1998

1. We carried out experiments in anesthetized rats to study the hemodynamic effects of intravenous injections of epinine. 2. Epinine (1-320 micrograms/kg) produced a biphasic effect on mean arterial blood pressure (n = 30). At doses lower than 40 micrograms/kg, arterial blood pressure decreased (by as much as 21.5 +/- 3.4%), though at higher doses it increased dose dependently (by as much as 73.2 +/- 14.5%). Epinine also produced bradicardia in a dose-dependent manner (by as much as 26.4 +/- 4.9%). Sulpiride (100 micrograms/kg) suppressed the hypotensive effect of epinine but did not change the hypertensive effect. In the presence of prazosin (1,000 micrograms/kg), arterial blood pressure r…

Dilation of the ductus venosus by stent implantation increases placental blood perfusion in fetal sheep.

2006

The reduction of resistance to flow in the ductus venous (DV) and a decrease of blood supply to the liver serve for the survival of the fetus during hypoxia. The present study investigated the influence of the increased diameter of the DV on placental blood perfusion. In 15 ewes with twin pregnancies at gestational ages of 117 +/- 4 days, a stent (4 or 5 mm) was placed into the DV of 1 twin (DV(stent) group) under ultrasound guidance. Blood flow rates in the umbilical vein (UV) and DV of both fetuses were measured using Doppler ultrasound. Eight pairs of twin fetuses were included for the final analysis. The dilatation of the DV increased the blood flow volume rate passed through the DV from …

Microvascular Obstruction in ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction: Looking Back to Move Forward. Focus on CMR

2019

After a myocardial infarction (MI), despite the resolution of the coronary occlusion, the deterioration of myocardial perfusion persists in a considerable number of patients. This phenomenon is known as microvascular obstruction (MVO). Initially, the focus was placed on re-establishing blood flow in the epicardial artery. Then, the observation that MVO has profound negative structural and prognostic repercussions revived interest in microcirculation. In the near future, the availability of co-adjuvant therapies (beyond timely coronary reperfusion) aimed at preventing, minimizing, and repairing MVOs and finding convincing answers to questions regarding what, when, how, and where to administe…

First combined flux chamber survey of mercury and CO2 emissions from soil diffuse degassing at Solfatara of Pozzuoli crater, Campi Flegrei (Italy): M…

2014

Abstract There have been limited studies to date targeting gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) flux from soil emission in enriched volcanic substrates and its relation with CO 2 release and tectonic structures. In order to evaluate and understand the processes of soil–air exchanges involved at Solfatara of Pozzuoli volcano, the most active zone of Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy), an intensive field measurement survey has been achieved in September 2013 by using high-time resolution techniques. Soil–air exchange fluxes of GEM and CO 2 have been measured simultaneously at 116 points, widely distributed within the crater. Quantification of gas flux has been assessed by using field accumulation chamb…
