Cross-border mobility and long-distance communication as modes of care circulation: insights from the Peruvian ‘zero generation’

2016

ABSTRACTThe contribution of older family members in the sending countries to the well-being of transnational families has only recently come more into the focus of research. Cross-border mobility and long-distance communication are two central modes through which the members of this ‘zero generation’ engage in transnational family life. By applying the framework of care circulation, this paper seeks to discuss the influence of cross-border mobility and long-distance communication on older Peruvian non-migrants’ engagement in transnational family care arrangements. The paper shows, first, that political and economic factors, as well as communication infrastructures, shape the patterns of the…

Transport Logistics and Modal Split of Spanish Exports to Europe: Empirical Evidence

2006

This article attempts to find the determinants of mode choice decisions for Spanish shipments to Europe and North Africa in four productive sectors that presents differentiated transport logistics. To this end, exhaustive fieldwork was carried out and a database constructed, including 1251 observations collected from transport decision-makers. A mixed logit is used to estimate a modal choice model, consistent with economic theory of modal choice in a price-time reliability framework. The main findings are that quality attributes of service influence modal choice only for the relatively high-value sectors whereas relatively low-value sectors are mainly affected by transport costs. In terms o…

ZrO2 Based materials as photocatalysts for 2-propanol oxidation by using UV and solar light irradiation and tests for CO2 reduction

2018

Abstract Bare ZrO2, Ce doped ZrO2 and Er doped ZrO2 samples have been prepared by a hydrothermal process and have been used as photocatalysts for 2-propanol oxidation reaction in gas solid regime. Moreover, some preliminary tests have been carried out for CO2 reduction. The samples were physico-chemically characterized and both bare and doped ZrO2 based materials resulted active for oxidation and reduction reactions by using UV and solar irradiation. The reactivity results have been correlated with the compositional, structural and morphological features of the photocatalysts.

EXTERNAL RECIRCULATION IN PRS TYPE TURBINE: EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL RESULTS.

2022

Cavitation is a relevant phenomenon for structural safety and noise level in hydraulic turbines, occurring when water pressure falls below the vapor value at a given temperature. In this case bubbles of vapor grow inside the liquid and move along with it. When the pressure returns above the vapor value the bubble collapses, and the pressure can locally achieve very high values, up to 7000 bars (Kumar & Saini, 2010). Moreover, if the bubble was confined also by the solid wall of a blade, the solid particles suspended in the fluid can be transported by the fluid ones and hit the solid wall at very high velocity, generating erosion. Cavitation is also the source of high frequency noise, ve…

Law and morals in the application of the public policy exception under the twin regulations 1103 and 1104 of 2016

2021

This paper discusses the interactions between fundamental principles of domestic legal systems and non-legal standards in the application of the public policy Generalklausel within the context of the twin Regulations 1103 and 1104 of 2016. In particular, this paper argues that public policy is composed of legal principles only and that there is no space for extra legal standards when the circulation of foreign deeds, decisions and laws is in discussion. This consideration has two consequences. Firstly, the role of good morals within contemporary private international law is extremely reduc

Financial assets and patrimonial issues in international families

2021

: The paper deals with patrimonial issues in International families and with the European Regulations 1103 and 1104/ 2016 together with regulation 650/2012. The paper particularly focuses on financial assets: Bank Account; Share of Investments Funds; Life Insurance; Virtual assets like criptovalutes; real estate wealth. This perspective implies the need to find the rule governing the succession or the families? patrimonial issues, also taking into account the different rules in the different states concerned of the contracts that govern the circulation of such goods.

Pre-marital and pre-unional financial agreements and their circulation in the context of the new EU regulations 2016/1103 and 2016/1104

2021

Regulations (EU) 2016/1103 and 2016/1104 provide spouses and partners with the possibility to conclude agreements for the organization of their property regime but do not detail their content and structure. Moreover, while the possibility to conclude those agreements even prior to the marriage or the conclusion of a registered partnership is a valuable innovation in comparison with other European Regulations in family matters, some choices made by the European legislator on applicable law will likely be source of inconveniences. Furthermore, as for their recognition and enforcement in the participating Member States ? which will be based on the same rules enacted for decisions, authentic in…

Deep-Sea Bioluminescence Blooms after Dense Water Formation at the Ocean Surface

2013

The deep ocean is the largest and least known ecosystem on Earth. It hosts numerous pelagic organisms, most of which are able to emit light. Here we present a unique data set consisting of a 2.5-year long record of light emission by deep-sea pelagic organisms, measured from December 2007 to June 2010 at the ANTARES underwater neutrino telescope in the deep NW Mediterranean Sea, jointly with synchronous hydrological records. This is the longest continuous time-series of deep-sea bioluminescence ever recorded. Our record reveals several weeks long, seasonal bioluminescence blooms with light intensity up to two orders of magnitude higher than background values, which correlate to changes in th…

Alkamides from Echinacea angustifolia Interact with P-Glycoprotein of Primary Brain Capillary Endothelial Cells Isolated from Porcine Brain Blood Ves…

2013

The blood-brain barrier prevents the passage of toxic compounds from blood circulation into brain tissue. Unfortunately, drugs for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, brain tumors, and other diseases also do not cross the blood-brain barrier. In the present investigation, we used isolated porcine brain capillary endothelial cells and a flow cytometric calcein-AM assay to analyze inhibition of P-glycoprotein, a major constituent of the blood-brain barrier. We tested 8 alkamides isolated from Echinacea angustifolia and found that four of them inhibited P-glycoprotein-mediated calcein transport in porcine brain capillary endothelial cells.

Absorption of Drugs after Oral Administration

2007

After oral administration, drugs must be absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract to achieve the systemic circulation and exert their pharmacological effects. The successful formulation of an optimized oral drug delivery system requires a detailed consideration and a good understanding of the intestinal absorption process, its possibilities and limitations. This article gives an overview and update on the concepts, possibilities, and limitations of drug absorption after oral administration.
