SUBCLINICAL RENAL DAMAGE IS ASSOCIATED WITH A REDUCED CHOROIDAL THICKNESS IN PATIENTS WITH PRIMARY HYPERTENSION
2018
Objective: The retina is considered the easiest accessible window to study the state of the systemic microcirculation, even if the choroid is the most important vascular layer of the eye. Our understanding of the choroid has been greatly increased in last years since the introduction of advanced techniques of optical coherence tomography (OCT). Our study was aimed to assess choroidal thickness by using Swept-Source OCT (SS-OCT) in essential hypertensive patients (EHs) with and without subclinical renal damage (SRD). Design and method: We enrolled 100 EHs of which 65 without kidney damage and 35 with SRD. In all the participants SS-OCT and a routine biochemical work-up were performed. Glomer…
The renal resistive index: is it a misnomer?
2015
Progress in digital ultrasound technology and diffusion of Doppler ultrasound evaluation of the kidney enable a widespread non-invasive evaluation of renal haemodynamics. Initially most attention has been paid to the study of extraparenchymal renal arteries, mainly to detect renovascular disease. However, this approach has low reproducibility and accuracy. Therefore, interest has gradually moved towards the duplex evaluation of intrarenal anatomy, where the best and most reliable signals are obtained from the large segmental or interlobar arteries that run directly towards the transducer. Among the sonographic parameters used in the last decade, great emphasis has been placed on the intrare…
Oral microcirculation in post-menopause: a possible correlation with periodontitis
2012
Objectives: The reduction in the level of oestrogen, typical in menopause, has some effect on the health of the oral cavity. In fact, post-menopausal women present more severe periodontal disease than pre- menopausal women. Numerous factors can be held to be responsible for this increase, among which are the effects of oestrogens on the oral epithelium, on the salivary glands, on bone tissue and on the endothelium. Our double blind study aims to evaluate the possible variations in oral microcirculation in post-menopausal women. Methods: Twenty-seven women in post-menopause (age: Mean ± SD: 57.3 ± 8.73) and 27 women in pre-menopause (age: Mean ± SD: 27.77 ± 3.56) were examined. Oral microcir…

L'Economista Anglofilo. Paolo Balsamo e l'utopia liberale in Sicilia (1787-1816)
2023
Paolo Balsamo -economist and professor of University of Palermo from 1787 to 1812- was a traveller and expert in the most advanced and modern British and European agriculture. He wrote articles and essays, both in English and Italian, on agriculture and political economy and was a correspondent of important cultural and political circles of British Whiggism. As a member of the Sicilian Parliament, ideologist of the constitutional party and trusted collaborator of Lord Bentinck, he wrote the Sicilian Constitution of 1812 which reformed the old institution of the Kingdom of Sicily transforming it into a liberal State. This monography explores Balsamo's intellectual and political figure throug…
Red Cell Interactions with the Microcirculation
1976
We have measured RBC velocity profiles for mammalian arterioles and venules from high-speed cinematographic motion pictures. Measurements were made at 320× and 400× optical magnification over an averaging time period of 10 ms. In vivo profiles are uniformly nonsymmetrical, the RBCs exhibit rotation, and they frequently deviate sidewise from the overall axial direction of motion. In general, this is more pronounced on the venous side. Since all of the profiles are time variant and the average values are synchronous with the midstream velocity, individual RBC velocities will vary about the average. Profiles become more blunted in vessels with smaller diameters. In vessels below 16 μm diameter…
EURO-CORDEX regional climate model simulation of precipitation on Scottish islands (1971-2000): model performance and implications for decision-makin…
2017
Due to their scale and complex topography, islands such as the Hebrides and Shetland Islands are not completely resolved by global climate models, which may impact the quality of data that can be provided about future climate in such locations. In principle, dynamical downscaling may provide helpful additional detail about future local climate. However, there is also the potential for error and uncertainty to cascade through to the regional simulation. Here, we evaluate the simulative skill of the EURO-CORDEX regional climate model ensemble on regional and local scales in the Hebrides and Shetland Islands, and consider the potential for such models to aid decision-making in island settings,…
Chemical characterisation of the gases released at Gyali Island, Dodecanese, Greece and preliminary estimation of the CO2 output
2021
Greece belongs to the most geodynamically active regions of the world and as such, it has to be considered an area of intense geogenic degassing. In terms of carbon, the territory is characterized by the high hydrothermal and volcanic activity of the South Aegean Active Volcanic Arc (SAAVA), and by widespread geological seeps of buried carbon dioxide and methane. In the present work, we investigate the island of Gyali located in the volcanic system Kos-Gyali-Nisyros. Nine gas samples have been collected on the island of Gyali in areas found both on land, in a small lake (∼2000 m2) along its beach, and in the sea close to the shore at shallow depths (<20 m). Results show that CO2 is the p…
Divina Instrumenta. Argenti liturgici nelle chiese di Gangi
2022
Synthesis and optical characterization of Er-doped bismuth titanate nanoparticles grown by sol-gel hydrothermal method
2017
Abstract The Er 3+ -doped bismuth titanate (Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 , BIT) nanoparticles were synthesized by a combined sol–gel and hydrothermal method under a partial oxygen pressure of 30 bar. The composition and morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman scattering. They showed pure and homogeneous spherical BIT nanoparticles with a size below the 30 nm. The incorporation of Er ions showed a strong decrease in the lattice parameters, as well as averaged particle size. The photoluminescence up-conversion (excitation wavelength =1480 nm) showed an enhancement of the infrared emission (980 nm) as Er concentration increased, achieving a maxi…
