Tracking Polariton Relaxation with Multiscale Molecular Dynamics Simulations

When photoactive molecules interact strongly with confined light modes in optical cavities, new hybrid light–matter states form. They are known as polaritons and correspond to coherent superpositions of excitations of the molecules and of the cavity photon. The polariton energies and thus potential energy surfaces are changed with respect to the bare molecules, such that polariton formation is considered a promising paradigm for controlling photochemical reactions. Relaxation Dynamics of Cr(acac)3 Probed by Ultrafast Infrared Spectroscopy

Ultrafast infrared spectroscopy is used to probe the dynamics of Cr(acac)3 upon ligand field (400 nm) and charge transfer state (345 nm) excitation. At both pump wavelengths, the ground state absorption bands are strongly bleached at zero delay, and new broad transient absorption bands appear red shifted from the bleached bands. Recovery of ground state bleach is dominated by a fast time constant (15 ps), while a small percentage recovers within 760−900 ps. Despite the extensive studies on Cr(acac)3 photophysics, the fast recovery of the ground state as a major channel is reported here for the first time. Harvesting Fluorescence from Efficient Tk -> Sj (j, k > 1) Reverse Intersystem Crossing for ??* Emissive Transition-Metal Complexes

Using a bimetallic Au(I) complex bearing alkynyl-(phenylene)3-diphosphine ligand (A-3), we demonstrate that the fluorescence can be exquisitely harvested upon T1 → Tk (k > 1) excitation followed by Tk → Sj (j, k > 1) intersystem crossing (ISC) back to the S1 state. Upon S0 → S1 355 nm excitation, the S1 → T1 intersystem crossing rate has been determined to be 8.9 × 108 s–1. Subsequently, in a two-step laser pump–probe experiment, following a 355 nm laser excitation, the 532 nm T1 → Tk probing gives the prominent blue 375 nm fluorescence, and this time-dependent pump–probe signal correlates well with the lifetime of the T1 state. Excitation-Wavelength-Dependent Photocycle Initiation Dynamics Resolve Heterogeneity in the Photoactive Yellow Protein from Halorhodospira halophila

Photoactive yellow proteins (PYPs) make up a diverse class of blue-light-absorbing bacterial photoreceptors. Electronic excitation of the p-coumaric acid chromophore covalently bound within PYP results in triphasic quenching kinetics; however, the molecular basis of this behavior remains unresolved. Here we explore this question by examining the excitation-wavelength dependence of the photodynamics of the PYP from Halorhodospira halophila via a combined experimental and computational approach. Abstract The mere appearance of a foreign word does not necessarily mark the birth of a loanword, which requires documented usage by the speech community. Relatively little research has been dedicated so far to the “prenatal” stage that would investigate the tentative infiltration of foreign-derived words. Nyet, a borrowing from Russian, is taken as a case in point. Strategische Zitate. Zu Friedrich Kittlers Heidegger-Lektüre

The article examines the variant ways in which Friedrich Kittler quotes certain passages of Martin Heiddegger’s texts and especially of Heidegger’s seminal book Sein und Zeit (1927) over the course of his academic career. It argues that the telos of Kittler’s variant, non-philological quotation is the legitimation of German studies as well as cultural studies by telling a myth: Martin Heidegger, a philosophical authority, has consequently affirmed media technology. Thus, Kittler’s practice of citation reveals its strategic intention. A reading of literary texts that takes into account the apriori function of technological innovation is an appropriate method supported by Geistesgeschichte.

Optical addressing at the subwavelength scale

The Green dyadic formalism is applied to the study of the optical properties of dielectric subwavelength structures integrated in coplanar geometry. We first consider homogeneous wires with high refractive index featuring subwavelength cross sections. We show that such wires may have guiding properties and that they may be coupled with a local illumination produced by a focused Gaussian beam totally reflected at the substrate interface. When excited by the focused beam, these subwavelength optical waveguides (SOW's) provide a confined source of light that could be used to excite a single nanoscopic object.
