Clinical course and outcomes of drug-induced liver injury: Nimesulide as the first implicated medication

2010

Abstract Background and aims Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is the most common cause of death from acute liver failure, and accounts for approximately 13% of cases of acute liver failure in the United States. The clinical presentation of DILI covers a wide spectrum, from asymptomatic liver test abnormalities to symptomatic acute liver disease, prolonged jaundice and disability, or overt acute or subacute liver failure. The aim of our study was to evaluate the number of DILI cases admitted to our Unit and to identify the drugs responsible. Thus, we reviewed all clinical records of patients with DILI admitted to our Unit from 1996 to 2006. Patients and methods A database was constructed, re…

Abdominal Ultrasound Does Not Reveal Significant Alterations in Patients With Nonceliac Wheat Sensitivity

2017

Abstract GOALS: The goal of this study was (A) to evaluate abdominal ultrasound signs in nonceliac wheat sensitivity (NCWS) patients for features useful in diagnosis and (B) to compare these aspects with those of celiac patients to assess whether ultrasound can be useful in the differential diagnosis between NCWS and celiac disease (CD). BACKGROUND: NCWS diagnosis is difficult as no biomarkers of this condition have as yet been identified. In CD ultrasound aspects have been identified that have a good diagnostic accuracy. STUDY: We prospectively recruited 45 NCWS patients (11 males, 34 females; mean age 35.7 y). Three control groups were included: (A) 99 age-matched CD patients; (B) 18 pati…

Deterioration in quality of life (QOL) in patients with malignant ascites : Results from a phase II/III study comparing paracentesis plus catumaxomab…

2012

Background: Malignant ascites (MA) is associated with poor prognosis and limited palliative therapeutic options. Therefore, quality of life (QoL) assessment is of particular importance to demonstrate new treatment value. Following the demonstration of the superiority of catumaxomab and paracentesis over paracentesis on puncture-free survival, this analysis aimed at comparing deterioration in QoL between both the treatment options. Patients and methods: In a randomised, multicentre, phase II/III study of patients with MA due to epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) positive cancer, the QoL was evaluated using the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life …

Long-term course of interferon-treated chronic hepatitis C

1998

Abstract Background/Aims: To evaluate whether sustained response to α-interferon improves clinical outcome in patients with chronic hepatitis C. Methods: A cohort of 410 consecutive patients (65% with chronic hepatitis, 35% with cirrhosis) were treated with α-interferon in two trials (mean follow-up 62.1 months, range 7–109 months). All were serum HCV RNA positive before therapy and received first 10 then 5 million units of α-2b or α-n1 interferon three times weekly for 6 to 12 months. Sustained response was defined as normal aminotransferases 12 months after stopping interferon. Results: Sixty-two patients (15.1%: 54 with chronic hepatitis, eight with cirrhosis) were sustained responders. …

Budd-Chiari syndrome with portal, splenic, and superior mesenteric vein thrombosis treated with TIPS: who dares wins.

2003

A 20 year old man presented with severe ascites and malnutrition due to Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) with portal vein (PV), and splenic and mesenteric vein (SMV) thrombosis in the proximal 3 cm. He had received regular and more frequent paracenteses of up to 17 litres each for eight months. He had a poor BCS prognostic index of 8.41 (table 1). After referral, despite full anticoagulation and diuretic drugs, he deteriorated over three weeks. No thrombophilic disorder was found. View this table: Table 1 Comparison of laboratory and clinical data before and two months after transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic stent shunt (TIPS) He underwent transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic stent shunt…

TIPS for acute and chronic Budd-Chiari syndrome: a single-centre experience.

2003

Abstract Background/Aims : Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a technically challenging but feasible treatment for Budd–Chiari syndrome (BCS). However, information about the outcome, particularly in patients with liver failure, is scarce. We report our experience of TIPS for BCS. Methods : Fifteen patients with BCS underwent TIPS. Eight had hepatic failure and seven underwent TIPS for BCS uncontrolled by medical treatment. Results : Fourteen out of 15 had successful TIPS placement. Out of the eight hepatic failure patients, four died soon after TIPS: one liver rupture, one portal vein rupture, one liver failure and one pulmonary oedema. Another patient had a significant…

Pain Mechanisms in Peritoneal Diseases Might Be Partially Regulated by Estrogen

2017

To identify factors influencing the differential pain pathogenesis in peritoneal endometriosis (pEM) and peritoneal carcinomatosis in ovarian cancer (pOC), we undertook an experimental study. Tissue samples of 18 patients with pEM, 15 patients with pOC, and 15 unaffected peritoneums as controls were collected during laparoscopy or laparotomy. Immunohistochemical stainings were conducted to identify nerve fibers and neurotrophins in the tissue samples. Additionally, 23 pEM fluids, 25 pOC ascites fluids, and 20 peritoneal fluids of patients with myoma uteri as controls were collected. In these fluids, the expression of neurotrophins was evaluated. The effects of peritoneal fluids and ascites …

A laparoscopic risk-adjusted model to predict major complications after primary debulking surgery in ovarian cancer: A single-institution assessment

2016

Abstract Objective To develop and validate a simple adjusted laparoscopic score to predict major postoperative complications after primary debulking surgery (PDS) in advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (AEOC). Methods From January 2006 to June 2015, preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative outcome data from patients undergoing staging laparoscopy (S-LPS) before receiving PDS (n=555) were prospectively collected in an electronic database and retrospectively analyzed. Major complications were defined as levels 3 to 5 of MSKCC classification. On the basis of a multivariate regression model, the score was developed using a random two-thirds of the population (n=370) and was validated on …

Synthesis, characterization of diorganotin(IV) complexes of N-(2-hydroxyarylidene)aminoacetic acid and antitumour screening in vivo in ehrlich ascite…

2001

Some new diorganotin(IV) complexes have been prepared by reacting potassium N-(2-hydroxyarylidene)aminoacetate with R2SnCl2(R = Me,nBu,Ph). The complexes have been characterized by 1H,13C,119Sn NMR, IR and 119mSn Mössbauer spectroscopic techniques in combination with elemental analysis. In the solid state, the complexes possess penta- and hexa-coordinated tin centres. The hexa-coordinated tin complexes were found to dissociate in solution, giving rise to penta-coordinated species as revealed by 119Sn NMR spectroscopy. Antitumour screening in vivo of the complexes L4snPh2,L4SnPh2· Ph3SnCl and L4SntBU2·t Bu2SnCl2 (L4 = N-(2-hydroxyacetophenone)aminoacetate) is also reported. Copyright © 2001 …
