In this paper, historical memory is rediscovered as an educational space for the new generations. Against the today’s falsification of history, it is proposed the activation of a laboratory of historical education where young people learn the shared construction of a better future.

Civil society participation in international decision making: recent developments and future perspectives in the indigenous rights arena

2012

This article focuses on key issues and recent developments concerning indigenous peoples' involvement in international decision making affecting their rights and interests. Based on a human rights-based approach to participation, it suggests that while a number of positive steps have been taken to allow indigenous peoples the possibility to take part to, and influence, relevant intergovernmental decision-making processes, there's a need to provide their own self-governing institutions and organisations with a more influential status than that granted to civil society organisations (CSOs) generally, whereby they can exercise different levels of participatory rights, depending upon the nature…

Inquiry Based Learning and Responsible Research and Innovation: Examples of Interdisciplinary Approaches at Different Schooling Levels

2021

The Inquiry-Based approach to Science Education (IBSE) is presented in scienti#c literature (Hake, 1998; Sharma et al., 2010) and in research projects reports (e.g. ESTABLISH, 2010; SAILS, 2014) as a credible solution to the reported lack of ef#cacy of more ‘traditional’ educative approaches, especially when focused on Research and Innovation (RRI) (Sutcliffe, 2006; IRRESISTIBLE, 2013; Ark of Inquiry, 2013). IBSE is an inductive approach to science teaching that considers direct experience at the center of learning. IBSE activities and strategies actively involve students in the identi#cation of relevant evidence, in critical and logical reasoning on the evidence collected and in re+ection …

Intra-Acting Food Citizenship in Community-Supported Agriculture in Finland

2023

Citizens are called upon to become active participants in creating a more sustainable food system. As food citizens, people participate in defining and constructing their food systems according to their needs and values. In food policies, the concept of food citizenship is often left undefined or with reference only to individual activities. In the food citizenship literature, the role of nonhuman agency in constituting food citizenship needs more examination. Here we investigate food citizenship activities in a citizen-led community-supported agriculture group and explore the role of materiality in constituting food citizenship. We ask (1) what is the role of material-discursive arrangemen…

PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION-A COMMUNICATING ORGANIZATION. THE ROLE OF COMMUNICATION AND ORIENTATION TOWARDS THE CITIZENS

2015

Public organizations are complex structure, which are continuously changing, a "meeting point" for resources, be they human, material, technological or of a different nature. In terms of the Romanian public system, the last few years have seen some major changes across the board, the way state institutions are organized and function, the attributions and responsibilities of public workers, and the needs and expectations of the citizens which benefits from these services being but a few of these aforementioned changes. Communication is essential for any intervention which aims to change something, especially when it comes to the public domain, where the success of any action is based on inte…

Developing a Conceptual Framework for Investigating Communication Supporting Community Resilience

2015

In crisis management, cooperation within the response network is seen as crucial. Usually, this network refers to authorities and nongovernmental organizations, such as the Red Cross. However, the authors argue that to improve societal resilience one should take a broader overview of the actors involved in crisis preparedness and mitigation, and also include the public. With this in mind, the role of communication is scrutinized and a conceptual framework developed as a starting point for further investigation into how communication may be developed to strengthen a community approach to crisis management that includes citizen groups in the broader response network. A model is presented alon…

Politics and the ‘Ideology’ of Journalism in Romania: Results from Local Case Studies

2011

Abstract The paper approaches the ‘ideology’ of Romanian post-communist journalism as identified in local news media organisations. We focus on the practical philosophy of journalism, emphasizing elements such as autonomy, truth, objectivity; and the relationship of journalists and news organisations with political actors. Special attention is given to the interplay between this practical philosophy and the political and economic constraints influencing news media organisations in Romania. We approach this topic using in-depth interviews with journalists and editors from news media organisations in three Romanian cities. We argue that two different ‘ideologies’ of journalism as a profession…
