Empowering New Agents of Civil Society or Fostering Good Citizens? Framing Youth Participation in Finnish Youth Organizations
2018
ABSTRACTThis article investigates how nationwide Finnish youth civil society organizations frame their approaches to youth participation. By analyzing data from interviews, websites, and annual reports, five frames are identified. The frames differ in how they define the purpose of participation, whom they see as the main actors, and what kind of member, volunteer, or other participant roles they provide to young people. Three frames are used as master frames that see young people as agents, learners, or targets of support; two subordinate frames expand the scopes of the organizations. Only some of the frames include any concept of integrating young people into the civil society.

This multi-perspective approach wil…
Practices and habits of citizenship and learning
2019
This chapter discusses the volume’s theoretical underpinnings, which are derived from philosophical pragmatism. One of the key ideas of this research project has been to bring philosophical and empirical research into dialogue by following the principles of pragmatism. Pragmatism sees the relationship between theory and practice as bidirectional: all theories must be subjected to revision in light of practice but, at the same time, a crucial role of theories is to critique current practices. At the level of methodology this implies that theorizing must be tied to what people do. The second central feature of pragmatism is that human experience is a crucial starting point of inquiry; pragmat…
Learning Economic Citizenship Among Rural Women : Village Saving Groups in Western Uganda
2022
The notion of economic citizenship is prevalent in non-governmental organizations’ (NGOs) interventions aimed at promoting inclusive development in the Global South. In this chapter, we draw on the concept of participatory learning (Mayoux in IDS Bulletin 29:39–50, 1998; Pretty in World Development 23:1247–1263, 1995), to explore how NGO-initiated village savings and lending associations (VSLAs) provide platforms for learning among rural women in Uganda. Based on findings from qualitative participatory research with saving groups in western Uganda, we identify three ways through which women learn a plethora of skills that promote economic citizenship. Further, we reflect on how shared learn…
Environmental citizenship in geography and beyond
2020
The need for wider action against environmental problems such as climate change has brought the debate about the role of citizen to the political, practical, and scientific domains. Environmental citizenship provides a useful tool to conceptualize the relation between citizenship and the environment. However, there exists considerable variation in the ways environmental citizenship is understood regarding both the aspect of citizenship and the relationship to the environment. In this article, we review the literature on environmental citizenship and investigate the evolution of the concept. The article is based on a literature search with an emphasis on geographical research. The concept of…
Diversity – a Challenge for Educators
2006
The challenge for most European countries is to educate second generation immigrants in particular in order to fulfill their parents’ dreams, but above all, to create a situation where students have hope of finding meaningful life in serving their new country in different workplaces. Effective education is a vital source of personal opportunity as well as means to support the economic development of young people in any society. Diversity must be viewed as a valuable learning source for all students in any classroom. In working and doing things together, students can develop a sense of respect for, and tolerance towards, different cultural and ethnic groups in our societies. Only through int…
Effects of company reputation on commitment, loyalty, and identification, and their respective influence on customer citizenship behaviours
2016
Company reputation is considered a hard to build, but an easy to lose immaterial asset. It is known to offer numerous financial and non-financial benefits, such as increased price premiums, customer loyalty, stronger company growth, and attracting better recruits. Included among these are also the so-called citizenship behaviours. The purpose of the study was to expand knowledge on the connections between company reputation and citizenship behaviours. Commitment and loyalty are constructs known to be influenced by reputation, and likewise to influence citizenship behaviours. One of the objectives was to confirm their status. The focal point of the study was to expand the model to include cu…

VOX Spain: The Organisational Challenges of a New Radical Right Party
2021
This article examines the organisation of VOX, a new radical right party in Spain. It shows that the party has taken early and uneven steps to build a mass organisation and initially opted for open membership recruitment with participatory organisational elements. Also, the party’s rapid growth and quick entrance into political institutions at different state levels led the party leadership to establish more centralised control and limit members’ prerogatives, though recruitment continued. Centralisation in part responds to organisational needs given the party’s quickly acquired political relevance, but also to the desire of the central party leadership to forestall the articulation of terr…
