Survey of Citrus tristeza virus in Southern Italy

After a recent detection of Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) in Calabria (Southern Italy), an investigation was initiated in the spring 2006 to survey for the virus in this Region. The survey showed that CTV was not present in the nurseries which indicated that citrus mother plants and citrus plantlets ready for marketing have fulfilled completely the phytosanitary requirements. CTV was not detected in citrus-growing areas of Catanzaro, Cosenza and Crotone Provinces, but was found, at different levels in infected plants, in some orchards located in the Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia Provinces. At low concentrations, polyamines are essential for cell renewal and growth, but they can be detrimental when consumed in high amount through the diet as they could support abnormal cell growth pathologies. Location and characterization of the stem-calyx area on oranges by computer vision

Three image analysis methods were studied and evaluated to solve the problem of removing long stems attached to mechanically harvested oranges: colour segmentation based on linear discriminant analysis, contour curvature analysis, and a thinning process which involves iterating until the stem becomes a skeleton. These techniques are able to determine the presence or absence of a stem with certainty, to locate the stems from random views with more than 90% accuracy and from profile images with an accuracy ranging from 92.4% to 100% depending on the method used. Seasonal-variation of nitrogenous compounds in the xylem sap of citrus

Samples of tracheal sap of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck cv. Washington Navel were taken from field trees throughout the year and the nitrogen composition of the sap was determined. The nitrogenous fraction of the sap was composed mainly of free amino acids (92–97% of total nitrogen) and nitrates throughout the year. Proline was the most abundant amino acid during almost the entire cycle, and its concentration was especially high during the autumn and winter period. Nevertheless, a significant part (40–60%) of the total organic nitrogen was transported as arginine. Total nitrogen as well as amino acids and nitrates were maximal at spring flush. Fight against Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) implies the use of CTV-resistant rootstocks, such as citranges [C. Sinensis (L.) Osb. × P. Trifoliata (L.) Raf.]. The 'C35' represents a promising tolerant to CTV genotype.
