Cladding-Pumped Erbium/Ytterbium Co-Doped Fiber Amplifier for C-Band Operation in Optical Networks
2021
Space-division multiplexing (SDM) attracts attention to cladding-pumped optical amplifiers, but they suffer from a low pump power conversion efficiency. To address this issue, ytterbium (Yb3+) and erbium (Er3+) co-doping is considered as an effective approach. However, it changes the gain profile of Er3+-doped fiber amplifiers and induces the gain difference between optical wavelengths in the C-band, significantly limiting the effective band of the dense wavelength-division multiplexed (DWDM) system. This paper is devoted to a detailed study of a cladding-pumped Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped fiber amplifier (EYDFA) through numerical simulations aiming to identify a configuration, before assembling a s…
Compressive behavior of FRP externally wrapped R.C. column with buckling effects of longitudinal bars
2018
Abstract In this paper, a calculation model to simulate the compressive behavior of R.C. columns with square cross-sections externally wrapped with FRP, including buckling effects of the longitudinal bars and reduction of the confinement pressure induced by the buckled compressed bars, is presented and discussed. The model distinguishes the cases of corner and side bars, calculating the different critical lengths and the critical loads. The Teng et al. (2009) model was adopted to predict the compressive behavior of FRP-confined concrete, and the Dhakal and Maekawa (2002) model was taken into account to predict the compressive behavior of longitudinal bars. The critical length and critical s…
Transformation Algorithm of Dielectric Response in Time-Frequency Domain
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/547105 A transformation algorithm of dielectric response from time domain to frequency domain is presented. In order to shorten measuring time of low or ultralow frequency dielectric response characteristics, the transformation algorithm is used in this paper to transform the time domain relaxation current to frequency domain current for calculating the low frequency dielectric dissipation factor. In addition, it is shown from comparing the calculation results with actual test data that there is a coincidence for both results over a wide …
An Analytical Step-by-Step Procedure to Derive the Flexural Response of RC Sections in Compression
2013
This paper proposes an analysis procedure able to determine the flexural response of rectangular symmetrically reinforced concrete sections subjected to axial load and uniaxial bending. With respect to the usual numerical approaches, based on the fibre decomposition method, this procedure is based on the use of analytical expressions of the contributions to the equilibrium given by the longitudinal reinforcement and the concrete region in compression, which depend on the neutral axis depth and the curvature at each analysis step. The formulation is developed in dimensionless terms, after a preliminary definition of the geometrical and mechanical parameters involved, so that the results are …
Moment-axial force domain of corroded R.C. columns
2016
In the present paper, a simple model to determine the moment-axial force domain of the cross-section of reinforced concrete (R.C.) columns subjected to corrosion process is presented. The model considers members with square and rectangular cross-sections and it accounts for—cover spalling; buckling of longitudinal reinforcing bars; loss of bond of bar in tension; reduction of confinement pressures (due to the reduction of the area of stirrups and cracking of concrete induced by rust formation). The analytical expressions for prediction of the area reduction of steel, bond strength and critical load of longitudinal bars utilized were verified against experimental data available in the litera…
A multi-technique characterisation of cronstedtite synthetized by iron-clay interaction in a step by step cooling procedure
2013
International audience; The cooling of steel containers in radioactive-waste storage was simulated in a step-by-step experiment from 90 to 40 degrees C. Among newly formed clay minerals observed in run products, cronstedtite was identified by a number of analytical techniques (powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy). Cronstedtite has not previously been recognized to be so abundant and so well crystallized in an iron-clay interaction experiment. The supersaturation of experimental solutions with respect to cronstedtite was due to the availability of Fe and Si in solution, as a result of the dissolution of iron metal powder, quartz, and m…
Influence of axial force and corrosion on failure of prestressed concrete structures considering M-V interaction
2021
Abstract Existing prestressed concrete structures suffer from degradation of prestressing for two main reasons: a defect of the sheath infills (cement grout) of bonded tendons, and corrosion of steel strands. These two causes, often concomitant, lead to a reduction over time of the effectiveness of initial prestressing, in addition to the ordinary tension losses due to concrete shrinkage and creep, and to steel relaxation. In many cases a consequence of bad grouting in bonded tendons is that the structure shows an intermediate behavior between that of external prestressing and that of internal bonded prestressing. This, added to damage to wires due to corrosion, makes it essential for the d…

Biodegradable Polymers for the Production of Nets for Agricultural Product Packaging
2021
It is well known that the need for more environmentally friendly materials concerns, among other fields, the food packaging industry. This regards also, for instance, nets used for agricultural product (e.g., citrus fruits, potatoes) packaging. These nets are typically manufactured by film blowing technique, with subsequent slicing of the films and cold drawing of the obtained strips, made from traditional, non-biodegradable polymer systems. In this work, two biodegradable polymer systems were characterized from rheological, processability, and mechanical points of view, in order to evaluate their suitability to replace polyethylene-based polymer systems typically used for agricultural prod…
Improvements in aggregate-paste interface by the hydration of steelmaking waste in concretes and mortars
2019
[EN] The objective of the experimental work is to study the mechanical properties in self-compacting concretes (SCC) in which part of the limestone aggregate has been replaced by granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) in different percentages ranging from 0% to 60%. The results show that at early ages the SCC with the largest content in slag tend to have lower compressive strengths due to the poor compacting of the aggregates, although in the long-term their strength increases due to the reactivity of the slag. In fact, at the age of 365 days, the mortars made with the substitution of 50% of cement by ground GBFS reach compressive strength similar to that of the mortar made with 100% of cemen…
