Impact of Gamma Radiation on Dynamic RDSON Characteristics in AlGaN/GaN Power HEMTs

2019

GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) are promising next-generation devices in the power electronics field which can coexist with silicon semiconductors, mainly in some radiation-intensive environments, such as power space converters, where high frequencies and voltages are also needed. Its wide band gap (WBG), large breakdown electric field, and thermal stability improve actual silicon performances. However, at the moment, GaN HEMT technology suffers from some reliability issues, one of the more relevant of which is the dynamic on-state resistance (R) regarding power switching converter applications. In this study, we focused on the drain-to-source on-resistance (R) characteristic…

Ab Initio Simulation of Attosecond Transient Absorption Spectroscopy in Two-Dimensional Materials

2018

We extend the first-principles analysis of attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy to two-dimensional materials. As an example of two-dimensional materials, we apply the analysis to monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and compute its transient optical properties under intense few-cycle infrared laser pulses. Nonadiabatic features are observed in the computed transient absorption spectra. To elucidate the microscopic origin of these features, we analyze the electronic structure of h-BN with density functional theory and investigate the dynamics of specific energy bands with a simple two-band model. Finally, we find that laser-induced intraband transitions play a significant role in…

3D Bioprinting for Vascularized Tissue-Engineered Bone Fabrication

2020

Vascularization in bone tissues is essential for the distribution of nutrients and oxygen, as well as the removal of waste products. Fabrication of tissue-engineered bone constructs with functional vascular networks has great potential for biomimicking nature bone tissue in vitro and enhancing bone regeneration in vivo. Over the past decades, many approaches have been applied to fabricate biomimetic vascularized tissue-engineered bone constructs. However, traditional tissue-engineered methods based on seeding cells into scaffolds are unable to control the spatial architecture and the encapsulated cell distribution precisely, which posed a significant challenge in constructing complex vascul…

Stability of Halloysite, Imogolite, and Boron Nitride Nanotubes in Solvent Media

2018

Inorganic nanotubes are attracting the interest of many scientists and researchers, due to their excellent application potential in different fields. Among them, halloysite and imogolite, two naturally-occurring aluminosilicate mineral clays, as well as boron nitride nanotubes have gained attention for their proper shapes and features. Above all, it is important to reach highly stable dispersion in water or organic media, in order to exploit the features of this kind of nanoparticles and to expand their applications. This review is focused on the structural and morphological features, performances, and ratios of inorganic nanotubes, considering the main strategies to prepare homogeneous col…

Experimental Investigation on the Compressive Behaviour of Clay Brick Masonry Columns Confined by BFRP or Steel Wires

2016

This paper presents the results of an experimental research aiming to investigate on the compressive behavior of full size clay brick masonry columns reinforced with Basalt Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (BFRCM) or with steel wires collaring. Uniaxial compressive tests were performed on eight retrofitted columns and four control specimens. Two masonry strength were considered by varying the mortar grade. Results are presented and discussed in terms of axial stress-strain relationships, failure modes and crack patterns of the specimens tested up to failure. For the limit of investigated variables, comparisons with unreinforced specimens show the ability of these alternative techniques …

Influence of bio-based additives on RAP clustering and asphalt binder rheology

2017

The use of high Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) content in Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) allows developing innovative materials for the construction and/or rehabilitation of sustainable infrastructures. The chemo-physical phenomena occurring during production of HMA containing high RAP content should be investigated and considered for the mix design optimization. In fact, when additives are used as rejuvenators of the aged bitumen, these phenomena can be affected causing significant variations in the mixture characteristics. This paper aims at studying the influence of two bio-based additives specifically on RAP clustering, phenomena which can significantly affect the performance of high-content R…

Simple equations for strength and deformability verification of tubular steel wind turbine towers

2021

Abstract Simple analytical expressions for a preliminary design of tubular steel wind turbine towers under flexure and shear are proposed. Expressions derived included local buckling effects, shear to moment interaction, ovalization of cross-section and inelastic rotation of foundation. A finite-element analysis with ABAQUS program was also conducted for examination of the ovalization effects and for the whole response of steel tube in flexure. Numerical and analytical results were compared with the experimental results of recent studies available in the literature, showing good agreement. The range of variable investigated refers to medium and large size steel wind tower with cylindrical s…

Debonding Phenomena in CFRP Strengthened Calcarenite Masonry Walls and Vaults

2009

In this paper the results of an experimental investigation on full-scale reinforced masonry elements like vaults and walls are presented. The masonry type is constituted by calcarenite ashlars and bed joint mortar and the reinforcement is constituted by Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strips. Preliminary experimental results obtained in a previous research by the authors on the local behaviour at the interface CFRP-calcarenite are summarized. Tests with controlled displacement are carried out on out-of-plane loaded walls and cylindrical vaults loaded at a quarter of the span. Results of tests carried out before and after the application of the reinforcement made it possible to evalu…

Compressive behaviour of eccentrically loaded slender masonry columns confined by FRP

2018

Abstract Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) confinement represents an effective tool for retrofitting masonry piers or columns enhancing their structural performance. This technique has been widely studied in the literature mainly with reference to short columns, while no extensive information is available on the influence of second order effects on its efficacy in case of slender members. Within this framework, the presented study concerns a simplified method able to assess the effects of FRP confinement on the compressive behaviour of slender masonry columns. A proper constitutive law of FRP confined masonry in compression is adopted for performing a sectional analysis, in which also consider…

Analytical modelling of force transmission in axially loaded RC columns with indirectly loaded jackets

2019

Abstract Concrete and steel jacketing are common strengthening techniques for reinforced concrete (RC) columns subjected to axial loads. In the most of cases the external jacket is made leaving gaps between the strengthening layer and the slabs, avoiding to carry directly a portion of the load. In this way, the external jacket induces a confinement pressure on the inner column, and its beneficial effect is due to the increase of strength and ductility. However, shear stresses develop on the interface between the column and consequently, the external jacket can be considered indirectly loaded. It sustains a portion of the axial load, which depends by the value of the axial shortening, relati…
