Ultimate Shear of RC Beams with Corroded Stirrups and Strengthened with FRP
2019
Transverse reinforcement plays a key role in the response behavior of reinforced concrete beams. Therefore, corrosion of steel stirrups may change the failure mode of elements from bending to shear, leading to a brittle and catastrophic crisis. It is important to strengthen reinforced concrete beams with corroded stirrups to enhance the shear resistance. This paper presents a formulation, based on the modified compression field theory, to estimate the ultimate shear of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with FRP, because of stirrup corrosion. The detrimental effect of corrosion on steel stirrup yield strength was taken into account by introducing an empirical decay law. The effective st…
Marginal and Internal Precision of Zirconia Four-Unit Fixed Partial Denture Frameworks Produced Using Four Milling Systems
2021
Background: CAD/CAM systems enable the production of fixed partial dentures with small and reproducible internal and marginal gaps. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reproducibility of the marginal and internal adaptations of four-unit fixed partial denture frameworks produced using four CAD/CAM systems. Materials and Methods: Prepared dies of a master model that simulated the loss of the first left molar were measured. Fifteen frameworks were manufactured using four CAD/CAM systems (A–D). The internal fit was determined by the replica technique, and the marginal gap was determined by microscopy. ANOVA was carried out to detect significant differences, and the Bonferron…
The triad hsp60-mirnas-extracellular vesicles in brain tumors: Assessing its components for understanding tumorigenesis and monitoring patients
2021
Brain tumors have a poor prognosis and progress must be made for developing efficacious treatments, but for this to occur their biology and interaction with the host must be elucidated beyond current knowledge. What has been learned from other tumors may be applied to study brain tumors, for example, the role of Hsp60, miRNAs, and extracellular vesicles (EVs) in the mechanisms of cell proliferation and dissemination, and resistance to immune attack and anticancer drugs. It has been established that Hsp60 increases in cancer cells, in which it occurs not only in the mitochondria but also in the cytosol and plasma-cell membrane and it is released in EVs into the extracellular space and in cir…
Researches regarding cutting tool condition monitoring
2017
The paper main purpose is monitoring of tool wear in metal cutting using neural networks due to their ability of learning and adapting their self, based on experiments. Monitoring the cutting process is difficult to perform on-line because of the complexity of tool wear process, which is the most important parameter that defines the tool state at a certain moment. Most of the researches appraise the tool wear by indirect factors such as forces, consumed power, vibrations or the surface quality. In this case, it is important to combine many factors for increasing the accuracy of tool wear prediction and establish the admissible size of wear. For this, paper both the theoretical data obtained…

Design, modelling, and analysis of a large floating dock for spar floating wind turbine installation
2020
Installation of floating wind turbines at the offshore site is a challenging task. A significant part of the time efficiency and costs are related to the installation methods which are sensitive to weather conditions. This study investigates a large floating dock concept, which can be used to shield a floating wind turbine during installation of tower, nacelle, and rotor onto a spar foundation. In this paper, the concept is described in detail, and a design optimisation is carried out using simple design constraints. Hydrodynamic analysis and dynamic response analysis of the coupled system of the optimum dock and spar are conducted. Two spars of different sizes are considered, and the motio…
Computational study of water adsorption on halloysite nanotube in different pH environments
2020
Abstract The comprehension of structural and energetic features of halloysite nanotube (HNT) in different chemical environments plays a crucial role in developing new HNT based materials. So far these aspects were investigated by means of laboratory techniques that hardly are able to provide hints at atomistic level of detail. Our investigation aims to obtain such accurate informations through density functional theory calculations on HNT models, in order to figure out the most stable forms of HNT under different pH conditions. It turns out that, at low pH, the preferred protonation sites are located in the inner aluminic surface while in alkaline medium the silicic layer can show delocaliz…
Underbalance well completion - a modern approach for mature gas fields
2017
The exploitation of natural gas fields from Transylvanian Basin started a century ago. The majority of these fields were discovered and developed in the last century, from 1950 to 1970. So, these reservoirs have over 50 years of production historical. These are mature fields with a very low reservoir pressure. Now, for some of these reservoirs the pressure is 10 – 20 % of initial values. The biggest challenge for a production company is to make completions and recompletions in depleted reservoirs wells. At the beginning was not a problem to do a workover in these wells because the completion fluids were lost in the reservoir and the pressure helped the wells to clean up. Now, because the re…
Computer-aided study of the gas flow within a natural gas storage and the associated collection network
2017
The current paper presents a computer-aided analysis of the way in which a natural gas storage created in a depleted gas deposit and the associated gas collection network are operated, both during the extraction phase and during the injection phase. In a first step, an analysis is carried out on a two-dimensional, nonstationary model for the gas storage, based on the deposit’s geometry and the rock properties, but also on the gas motions. Also, a dynamic simulation of the injection and extraction processes is unfolded, allowing the study and optimisation of elements such as well placement and gas flows through the wells with the goal of maximising the storable gas quantities. A second model…
Distributed Cognition Learning in Collaborative Civil Engineering Projects Management
2012
Due to the diversity and complexity of its projects, the Civil Engineering domain has historically encompassed very heterogeneous disciplines. From the beginning, any Civil Infrastructure project is systematically divided into smaller subprojects in order to reduce or isolate the overall complexity. However, as a parallel design work, these subdesigns may experience divergences which often lead to design conflicts when they are merged back to the global design. If a high-quality design is desired, these conflicts need to be detected and solved. We present a Multiagent system able to manage these design conflicts by detecting them, by assisting the engineers in the negotiation of solutions, a…
