Interaction of glutamic-acid-rich proteins with the cGMP signalling pathway in rod photoreceptors.
1999
The assembly of signalling molecules into macromolecular complexes (transducisomes) provides specificity, sensitivity and speed in intracellular signalling pathways. Rod photoreceptors in the eye contain an unusual set of glutamic-acid-rich proteins (GARPs) of unknown function. GARPs exist as two soluble forms, GARP1 and GARP2, and as a large cytoplasmic domain (GARP' part) of the beta-subunit of the cyclic GMP-gated channel. Here we identify GARPs as multivalent proteins that interact with the key players of cGMP signalling, phosphodiesterase and guanylate cyclase, and with a retina-specific ATP-binding cassette transporter (ABCR), through four, short, repetitive sequences. In electron mic…
Rhyolitic dykes of Paros Island, Cyclades
2005
Abstract The discovery of rhyolitic dykes from the NE part of the island of Paros is described here for the first time. The dykes that can be mapped for a length of ca. 1.1 km are striking about 6° and 38° NE. The width reaches up to 11m maximum. The rhyolitic rocks are porphyric with a fine-grained matrix of mainly feldspar, quartz, some biotites and opaques. K-feldspar, biotite and plagioclase occur as phenocrysts, and mafic-intermediate enclaves are common. At the chilled margin in contact to the gneissic country rocks the dykes are vitric. There, the enclaves have been preserved from contact reaction with the melt and alteration effects and show primary igneous minerals such as clinopyr…
Lightning-induced weathering of Cascadian volcanic peaks
2020
Abstract The process of meteorological lightning-induced modification of coherent volcanic rocks is examined by geochemical, textural, and experimental analysis of fulgurites from South Sister volcano, Oregon Cascades, USA. Lightning's effects on volcanic target rocks was simulated with an arc-welding device in order to reproduce the geochemical and textural features of natural fulgurites and to constrain temperatures of melting and devolatilization behavior during lightning strikes. Melting of volcanic target rocks produces melts of exceptional compositional diversity, ranging from those with pure mineral compositions (e.g., diopside and plagioclase), resulting from congruent melting react…
Mafic and ultramafic enclaves in Ustica Island lavas: Inferences on composition of lower crust and deep magmatic processes
2005
Abstract Ustica Island, southern Tyrrhenian Sea, is constituted of Quaternary alkaline volcanics. A variety of enclaves representative of deep to supra-crustal settings were recently found in a hawaiitic lava flow. Enclaves consist of: (i) Ultramafic meta-cumulates, i.e. clinopyroxenites and wherlites characterized by variably deformed porphyroclastic to granoblastic textures. (ii) Mafic cumulates, i.e. gabbros (± amphibole) and troctolites, the first often characterized by frequent amphibole breakdown coronas (olivine + Ti-augite + plagioclase + magnetite + ilmenite + rhonite) in response to an H 2 O decrease during the ascent, while the troctolites interpreted as meta-cumulates. (iii) Mic…
The Othris Ophiolite, Greece: A snapshot of subduction initiation at a mid-ocean ridge
2008
The mantle section of the Tethyan-type Othris Ophiolite, Greece, records tectono-magmatic processes characteristic of both mid-ocean ridges and supra-subduction zones. The Othris Ophiolite is a remnant of the Jurassic Neotethys Ocean, which existed between Eurasia and Gondwanaland. Othris peridotites range from fertile plagioclase lherzolites to depleted harzburgites. Abundances of Al2O3 and CaO show well-defined inverse linear correlations with MgO, suggesting that the Othris peridotites formed as residua from variable degrees of partial melting. Peridotites from the Fournos Kaitsa and western Katachloron sub-massifs are similar to abyssal peridotites and can be explained by a multistage m…
Contrasting textural record of two distinct metamorphic events of similar P-T conditions and different durations
2005
A structural, metamorphic and geochronological study of the StareMesto belt implies the existence of two distinct metamorphic events of similar peak P-T conditions (700-800 C, 8-10 kbar) during the Cambro-Ordovician and the Carboniferous tectonometamorphic events. The hypothesis of two distinct periods of metamorphism was suggested on the basis of structural discordance between an undoubtedly Carboniferous granodiorite sill intrusion and earlier Cambro-Ordovician fabrics of a banded amphibolite complex. The analysis of crystal size distribution (CSD) shows high nucleation density (N0) and low average growth rate (Gt) for Carboniferous mylonitic metagabbros and mylonitic granodiorites. The…
Using calculated chemical potential relationships to account for coronas around kyanite: an example from the Bohemian Massif
2010
Corona textures around kyanite, involving for example zoned plagioclase separating kyanite from the matrix, reflect the instability of kyanite with the matrix on changing P-T conditions, commonly related to decompression. The chemical potential gradients set up between the kyanite and the matrix as a consequence of slow Al diffusion drive corona development, with the zoning of the plagioclase reflecting the gradients. Calculated mineral equilibria are used to account for corona textures involving plagioclase ± garnet around kyanite, and replacement of kyanite by plagioclase + spinel symplectite, in quartz + plagioclase + K-feldspar + garnet + kyanite granulite facies gneiss from the Blanský…
A non-canonical chemical feedback self-limits nitric oxide-cyclic GMP signaling in health and disease
2018
Endothelial nitric oxide (NO) stimulates the heme protein, soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) to form vasoprotective cyclic GMP (cGMP). In different disease states such as pulmonary hypertension, NO-cGMP signaling is pharmacologically augmented, yet the pathomechanisms leading to its dysregulation are incompletely understood. Here we show in pulmonary artery endothelial cells that endogenous NO or NO donor compounds acutely stimulate sGC activity, but chronically down-regulate both sGC protein and cGMP formation. Surprisingly, this endogenous feedback mechanism was independent of canonical cGMP signaling via cGMP-dependent protein kinase. It did not involve thiol-dependent modulation, a process…
