Nonlinear extended thermodynamics of a dilute nonviscous gas

2002

This paper deals with further developments of a nonlinear theory for a nonviscous gas in the presence of heat flux, which has been proposed in previous papers, using extended thermodynamics. The fundamental fields used are the density, the velocity, the internal energy density, and the heat flux. Using the Liu procedure, the constitutive theory is built up without approximations and the consistence of the model is showed: it is shown that the model is determined by the choice of three scalar functions which must satisfy a system of partial differential equations, which always has solutions. Different changes of field variables are carried out, using different Legendre transformations, passi…

Thermodynamic Interaction Parameters of Tetra-n-undecylcalix[4]resorcinarenes with Selected Solvents Studied by Inverse Gas Chromatography

2004

The basic thermodynamic parameters, characterising intermolecular interactions of tetra-n-undecylcalix[4]resorcinarene and its octaacetate derivative with simple organic solutes, were calculated by using the inverse gas chromatography method. Free energy, enthalpy and entropy of sorption were determined.

Some Necessary Revisions of the Neuronal Model Concept of the Orienting Response

1978

Sokolov's neural trace model as well as his entropy model of the orienting response are examined. Both seem inadequate for empirical and theoretical reasons. The role of the relevance aspect of a stimulus is stressed. It is proposed to consider the information transmitted by a stimulus as in some way being weighted by the relevance of the context to which it belongs. It is furthermore proposed to restrict the neural trace concept to the physical properties of the stimulus. Major theoretical gain is achieved by viewing information content of a stimulus and its physical properties independently and by breaking the motivation determining the strength of an orienting response into a situation-s…

A shallow water SPH model with PML boundaries

2015

Abstract We focus on the study and implementation of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) numerical code to deal with non-reflecting boundary conditions, starting from the Perfect Matched Layer (PML) approach. Basically, the method exploits the concept of a physical damping which acts on a fictitious layer added to the edges of computational domain. In this paper, we develop the study of time dependent shallow waves propagating on a finite 2D-XY plane domain and their behavior in the presence of circular and, more generic, rectangular boundary absorbing layers. In particular, an analysis of variation of the layer׳s thickness versus the absorbing efficiency is conducted. In our model, the m…

Thermodynamics of Rubber Elasticity

2001

A thermodynamic study of an isotropic rubber band under uniaxial stress is presented on the basis of its equation of state. The behavior of the rubber band is compared with both that of an ideal elastomer and that of an ideal gas, considering the generalized Joule's law as the ideality criterion.

Some properties of multi-degree-of-freedom potential systems and application to statistical equivalent non-linearization

2003

This paper presents some properties of two restricted classes of multi-degree-of-freedom potential systems subjected to Gaussian white-noise excitations. Specifically, potential systems which exhibit damping terms with energy-dependent polynomial form are referred to. In this context, first systems with coupled stiffness terms and damping terms depending on the total energy are investigated. Then, systems with uncoupled stiffness terms and damping terms depending on the total energy in each degree-of-freedom are considered. For these two classes, it is found that algebraic relations among the stationary statistical moments of the energy functions can be derived by applying standard tools of…

An application of the arithmetic euler function to the construction of nonclassical states of a quantum harmonic oscillator

2001

Abstract All quantum superpositions of two equal intensity coherent states exhibiting infinitely many zeros in their Fock distributions are explicitly constructed and studied. Our approach is based on results from number theory and, in particular, on the properties of arithmetic Euler function. The nonclassical nature of these states is briefly pointed out. Some interesting properties are brought to light.

Risk assessment of non-target effects of Closterocerus chamaeleon (Girault) parasitoid of the eucalypt gall maker Ophelimus maskelli (Ashmead) (Hymen…

2015

The pre-release risk assessment, a recommended practice in biological control programmes, was carried out before introducing Closterocerus chamaeleon (Girault), a eulophid parasitoid of the eucalypt gall maker Ophelimus maskelli (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera, Eulophidae), in Sicily, Italy. We evaluated its host specificity in laboratory small arena no-choice tests on six non-target hosts, using O. maskelli as a control species. The non-target species fit with at least one of the following criteria: a) common geographical origin; b) ecological or behavioural affinities with the target host; c) concealed habit of the preimaginal stages; d) taxonomic affinity; e) taxonomic affinity with hosts of cong…

Phillip II of Macedon: The First European. Asia and Europe as Political Concepts in Classical Greece

2021

The aim of this paper is to analyse the historical and cultural evolution of Europe and Asia considered as a political terms in Classical Greece. In order to achieve this objective, we will address several primary sources such as Aeschylus’ Pe…

The diverse genetic origins of a Classical period Greek army.

2022

Trade and colonization caused an unprecedented increase in Mediterranean human mobility in the first millennium BCE. Often seen as a dividing force, warfare is in fact another catalyst of culture contact. We provide insight into the demographic dynamics of ancient warfare by reporting genome-wide data from fifth-century soldiers who fought for the army of the Greek Sicilian colony of Himera, along with representatives of the civilian population, nearby indigenous settlements, and 96 present-day individuals from Italy and Greece. Unlike the rest of the sample, many soldiers had ancestral origins in northern Europe, the Steppe, and the Caucasus. Integrating genetic, archaeological, isotopic, …
