The study area, located at the southern edge of Central High Atlas (Morocco), hosts 900 m thick Liassic gravity-related sedimentary deposits, preserved at the hanging wall of one of the possibly inherited, reactivated Hercynian faults (Tizi n'Firest fault). ABSTRACT Studies of maars and diatremes suggest a specific process in their formation. Magma rises along a fissure and contacts ground– or surface derived water. The resulting phreatomagmatic eruptions give rise to base surge and air–fall deposits consisting of juvenile and wall–rock material. Spalling of the wall–rocks enlarges the fissure into an embryonic vent. At a critical diameter of the vent large-scale spalling at depth and slumping near the surface gives rise to a ring–fault of large diameter and subsidence of the enclosed wall–rocks and overlying pyroclastic debris. Until about the late 1960s, macroscopically ductile deformation of quartz was seen as a microscopically cataclastic process by most geologists (cf. the origin of the name ‘mylonite’). Undulatory extinction, subgrains, recrystallised grains and even crystallographic preferred orientations were interpreted as due to water-assisted brittle deformation processes. Nowadays, by contrast, the occurrence of these optical microstructures is considered as conclusive and unequivocal evidence for dislocation creep. The abundance of these microstructures in naturally deformed rocks lead to the conclusion that dislocation creep is the most important ductile deformation mechanism within the Earth’s crust.…

Abstract Varves of the Holocene and of the last interglacial were investigated in two sediment sequences from Eifel maar lakes. The modern maar with Schalkenmehrener Maar Lake and the dry maar lake West Hoher List have the same size, are two kilometres apart at the same altitude, but the Eemian lake was much deeper. The sediments of both lakes are dominated by autochthonous sediments, mainly from diatom-dominated algae. Differences in the palaeoproductivity and in calcite precipitation are probably not climatically controlled but due to lake basin morphometry and the carbonate reservoir in the catchment areas. [1] Predicting explosive eruptions remains an outstanding challenge. Knowledge of the controlling parameters and their relative importance is crucial to deepen our understanding of conduit flow dynamics and accurately model the processes involved. This experimental study sheds light on one important parameter—outgassing—and evaluates its influence on magma fragmentation behavior. A long-standing challenge in volcanology is to explain why explosive eruptions of silicic magma give way to lava. A widely cited idea is that the explosive-to-effusive transition manifests a two-stage degassing history whereby lava is the product of non-explosive, open-system gas release following initial explosive, closed-system degassing. Direct observations of rhyolite eruptions indicate that effusive rhyolites are in fact highly explosive, as they erupt simultaneously with violent volcanic blasts and pyroclastic fountains for months from a common vent. In certain areas rhyolitic tuffs of the Upper Rotliegend include a greenish, talc-like substance, called “Hygrophyllit”. It has been found too at the base of the Rotliegend in the Saarland. It is shown, that Hygrophyllit corresponds to decomposed pumice, related to the acid permian volcanism. X-ray, DTA and chemical investigations yielded, that Hygrophyllit consists essentially of a mixed layer mica-Ca-montmorillonite with random interstratification and previously about 33 % expandable layers. Abstract The study presents the results of a heavy mineral analysis from a 38 m long record of lacustrine Eifel maar sediments from a core section of the Dehner dry maar. The record encompasses the period from 29,000 to about 12,500 b2k. Statistical analyses enabled the distinction of local and regional source areas of aeolian material and revealed pronounced changes in the amounts of different heavy mineral species and corresponding changes in the grain size Index (GSI and CSI). The Ruhr coal district represents part of an external fold and thrust belt of the Variscan orogen in central Europe. Extensive mining exposed molasse-type, coal-bearing clastic sequences of Upper Carboniferous age, deformed by folding and thrusting. Thrusts range in scale from decameters to 40 kilometers along strike but displacements are below 2.5 km. They are distributed in various stratigraphic levels and no regional detachment horizon is exposed. Displacement is mainly towards NW (towards the foreland) but also towards SE. Organic lacustrine sediment varves as indicators of past precipitation changes: a 3,000-year climate record from Central Finland

Annually laminated (varved) sediments from Lake Kallio-Kourujärvi, Central Finland, provide high-resolution sedimentological data for the last three millennia. These varves consist of two laminae that represent (1) deposition during the spring-to-autumn growing season, composed of degraded organic matter and a variety of microfossils, and (2) deposition during winter, composed of fine-grained homogenous organic matter. Because of the absence of a clastic lamina, these varves differ from the typical, well-described, clastic-organic varve sequences in Fennoscandian lakes.
