Marine protected areas rescue a sexually selected trait in European lobster
2020
Abstract Marine protected areas (MPAs) are increasingly implemented worldwide to maintain and restore depleted populations. However, despite our knowledge on the myriad of positive responses to protection, there are few empirical studies on the ability to conserve species’ mating patterns and secondary sexual traits. In male European lobsters (Homarus gammarus), the size of claws relative to body size correlates positively with male mating success and is presumably under sexual selection. At the same time, an intensive trap fishery exerts selection against large claws in males. MPAs could therefore be expected to resolve these conflicting selective pressures and preserve males with large cl…
A mysterious dwarf: Suthepiidae nov. fam., a new harvestman family from mountains of northern Thailand (Arachnida: Opiliones: Laniatores)
2020
A new family of laniatorean harvestmen from northern Thailand is proposed, Suthepiidae fam. nov., which comprises one new genus and one new species, Suthepia inermis sp. nov. This family stands out by characters hitherto unknown or rarely recorded for Opiliones, and close relatives of this taxon are presently not discernible. Important characters are a short and compact penis with a massively enlarged distal part with a rich armament of sclerites and membranes which can be moved and everted by hemolymph pressure during mating; the pedipalp of males and females is without raptorial adaptations, i.e. elevated sockets (= apophyses) carrying strong distal spines are completely absent, therefore…
Retinal Imaging through Phakic Iris-Claw IOL.
2014
AbstractBackground: Phakic anterior chamber iris-fixated IOL (PIOL) are established for the correction of high myopia. These patients require attention to macular pathologies. This study was to evaluate the quality of imaging through the PIOLs. Methods: 54 eyes of 31 myopic and hyperopic patients with Verisyse®, Verisyse toric®, and Veriflex® phakic iris-fixated IOL were included. Mean preoperative refraction was −11.0 D and +5.7 D, respectively; mean follow-up time was 7.4 years (5–11 years). A matched control group was formed without PIOL implantation. OCT scans were performed and evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively. Results: In 52 eyes of 31 patients (96%), a 3D-OCT image and fund…
Behaviour of the phakic iris-claw intraocular lens (Artisan /Verisyse) during accommodation: an optical coherence biometry study.
2007
Purpose To evaluate variations in the position of the phakic iris claw lens (Artisan®, Verisyse®) and the natural crystalline lens during the accommodation process. Methods We measured changes in position of the iris claw lens and the crystalline lens during the accommodation using optical coherence biometry (AC Master®/Carl Zeiss Meditec, Germany) in 17 patients (28 eyes) with a phakic iris claw lens implanted for high myopia and/or myopic astigmatism. Accommodative effort was obtained using an internal optical target within the measuring device. Results There was a forward shift of the phakic iris claw lens with a mean of 70 μm (8–178 μm) of the optical path length (OPL). At the same time…
Contrast sensitivity after implantation of toric iris-claw lenses in phakic eyes.
2004
Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the change in contrast sensitivity after implantation of the Verisyse toric phakic intraocular lens (IOL) (AMO) for the correction of myopia with astigmatism. Setting: Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany. Methods: Eighteen eyes had implantation of an iris-supported toric phakic IOL to correct myopia with astigmatism. The mean preoperative spherical equivalent was −12.65 diopters ± 3.6 (SD). The contrast sensitivity with best spectacle correction was determined before surgery and 3 months after surgery using the CSV-1000 HGT instrument (Vector Vision Inc.). Results: Three months after IOL implantation, the mean contrast sen…
The large invasive population of Xenopus laevis in Sicily, Italy
2008
AbstractThe worldwide spread of invasive species is considered to be one of the main causes of global amphibian declines and the loss of biodiversity in general. The African Clawed Frog, Xenopus laevis, shows a strong ability to establish populations and invade various geographic regions. In 2004 X. laevis was found in Sicily for the first time. The Sicilian population is probably the largest in Europe with a range of about 225 km2 in an area characterized by numerous agricultural ponds. This high density of ponds has potentially facilitated the dispersal of X. laevis. The frogs can move far from rivers or watercourses by utilizing the ponds as suitable "islands". The analysis of their diet…
Span Programs and Quantum Algorithms for st-Connectivity and Claw Detection
2012
We introduce a span program that decides st-connectivity, and generalize the span program to develop quantum algorithms for several graph problems. First, we give an algorithm for st-connectivity that uses O(n d^{1/2}) quantum queries to the n x n adjacency matrix to decide if vertices s and t are connected, under the promise that they either are connected by a path of length at most d, or are disconnected. We also show that if T is a path, a star with two subdivided legs, or a subdivision of a claw, its presence as a subgraph in the input graph G can be detected with O(n) quantum queries to the adjacency matrix. Under the promise that G either contains T as a subgraph or does not contain T…

Claws contained in all n-tournaments
1993
Abstract We prove that any claw of order n with degree d≤ 3 8 n is n-unavoidable, which means that any tournament of order n contains it as a subdigraph. A simple corollary is that any tournament has a directed Hamiltonian path.
