Mineral and trace element composition of the Lokpanta oil shales in the Lower Benue Trough, Nigeria

2011

Abstract The concentrations of minerals and trace elements in the Lokpanta oil shale from the Lower Benue Trough, Nigeria have been determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), respectively. X-ray diffraction data were evaluated using the SIROQUANT™ interactive data processing system based on Rietveld interpretation methods. A new method of trace element determination in oil shale, involving LA-ICP-MS analysis of glass beads prepared by fusing oil shale ash on an iridium strip heater was used, and the accuracy of the method was assessed by including a standard shale reference material (SGR-1b) in the analysis program. The…

Application of differently treated illite and illite clay samples for the development of ceramics

2017

Abstract This study represents the results of investigations on the possible geopolymer formation of an alkali, mechanically and thermally (including hydrothermally) activated 2:1 layer silicate, namely, illite and illite clay, for low-temperature ceramic products. The main starting materials were Quaternary illite clay samples taken from the Apriki–Laza pit in Latvia. For the investigations, an intermediate composition of illite clay and separated illite were used. The following research methods for the treated illite and illite clay were used: the phase transition was analysed by differential thermal analysis, while the phase compositions, microstructures and structures were analysed by X…

Iron-clay interactions: Detailed study of the mineralogical transformation of claystone with emphasis on the formation of iron-rich T-O phyllosilicat…

2014

International audience; Iron-minerals-water interactions are of primary importance in the contexts of underground structure engineering (e.g. reactive barriers or deep geological storage) and for the understanding of secondary alteration processes in primitive meteorites. To improve our understanding of these systems, we determine the mineralogical transformations induced by the association of iron and silicates during a cooling through an experimental simulation of iron-clay interactions with a step-by-step procedure in the range of 90 degrees C to 40 degrees C. The run products and solutions are well characterised, by means of different techniques (X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmis…

Clay-based drug-delivery systems: what does the future hold?

2017

Clays for drug delivery have been used from ancient time due to the large availability of clay minerals and their unprecedented properties. The empirical use of nanoclays from the past is converted in a stimulating scientific task aimed at building up nanoarchitectonic vehicles for drug delivery in a targeted and stimuli-responsive fashion. Here the historical aspects are discussed; next the modern examples of applications of different clay-based materials are discussed. A special focus is given to halloysite clay nanotubes, which are an emerging and very promising nanomaterial for drug-delivery purposes due to its special morphology and unique chemical properties. Advantages and limitatio…

Interaction of Nanometric Clay Platelets

2008

International audience; The free energy of interaction between two nanometric clay platelets immersed in an electrolyte solution has been calculated using Monte Carlo simulations as well as direct integration of the configurational integral. Each platelet has been modeled as a collection of charged spheres carrying a unit chargethe face of a platelet contains negative charges, and the edge, positive charges. The calculations predict that a configuration of “overlapping coins” is the global free energy minimum at intermediate salt concentrations (10−100 mM). A second weaker minimum, corresponding to the well-known “house of cards” configuration, also appears in this salt interval. At low sal…

Morphology modification of a polyethylene/clay nanocomposite samples under convergent flow

2009

The morphology of PE/CL nanocomposite samples subjected to convergent flows is studied. Elongational flow – the typical flow involved in spinning and film-blowing processing operations – significantly increases with the reduction of the capillary diameter. The values of the convergent extensional stress (calculated by Cogswell's formula) for the PE/CL systems, for all the adopted capillary geometries, are greater than the calculated values for pure polyethylene. The applied convergent flow, at the entrance of the capillary, is able to change the clay morphology and consequently the final material properties on the PE/CL system with limited affinity between the matrix and organo-modified cla…

EVA-montmorillonite nanocomposites: effect of processing condition

2004

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of the compounding apparatus and of processing conditions on the properties of an organoclay-poly[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)] (EVA) nanocomposite. The filled materials were prepared using either a discontinuous batch mixer, a single screw extruder, a counter rotating intermeshing twin-screw compounder or a corotating intermeshing twin-screw extruder. The characterization of the obtained nanocomposites was performed by XRD, thermogravimetry, mechanical and rheological measurements. The study has shown the possibility of producing nanocomposites based on EVA and a commercial organoclay (Cloisite 15A) by several mixing equipments. In fact all the…

Injection molding of syndiotactic polystyrene/clay nanocomposites

2006

This study aims at exploring the effect of a commercial organoclay montmorillonite (MMT) on the final properties of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) injection-molded samples. To this goal, injection-molded specimens made from neat sPS and commercial MMT modified with various organic compounds were prepared in different molding conditions. Dispersion of clay was attained via melt blending, directly in the injection chamber of the injection-molding machine. The obtained specimens were analyzed by IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, and differential thermal analysis, with the aim of elucidating the effect of clay on the microstructures of the samples. Results clearly show that,…

Steric stabilization of modified nanoclays triggered by temperature.

2015

Halloysite clay nanotubes were modified through the adsorption of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-amine terminated (PNIPA-NH2) onto the external surface by exploiting electrostatic interactions at pH=6. In spite the amount of attached polymer is rather low (1 wt%), the properties of the nanotubes are deeply modified. The apparent specific volume and isentropic compressibilities of the hybrid nanomaterial dispersed in water evidenced the transferring of the termosensitive property from the polymer to halloysite. The hydrodynamic radius as well as the ζ-potential of the nanohybrid are consistent with the attachment of a positively charged polymer onto the negative surface of the nanotube. The col…
