Nanocarrier based on halloysite and fluorescent probe for intracellular delivery of peptide nucleic acids

2022

The development of systems able to deliver genetic material into a target site is a challenge for modern medicine. Single-stranded peptide nucleic acids have attracted attention as promising therapeutic molecules for diagnostic and gene therapy. However, their poor cell membrane permeability represents a drawback for biomedical applications. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are emerging materials in drug delivery applications both for their ability to penetrate cell membranes and for enhancing the solubility of drugs in biological media. Herein, we report the first example of the use of a nanocarrier based on halloysite labelled with fluorescent switchable halochromic oxazine molecules, to deliv…

Distribution of rare earth elements in marine sediments from the Strait of Sicily (western Mediterranean Sea): Evidence of phosphogypsum waste contam…

2010

Concentrations of rare earth elements (REE), Y, Th and Sc were recently determined in marine sediments collected using a box corer along two onshore–offshore transects located in the Strait of Sicily (Mediterranean Sea). The REE + Y were enriched in offshore fine-grained sediments where clay minerals are abundant, whereas the REE + Y contents were lower in onshore coarse-grained sediments with high carbonate fractions. Considering this distribution trend, the onshore sediments in front of the southwestern Sicilian coast represent an anomaly with high REE + Y concentrations (mean value 163.4 lg g 1) associated to high Th concentrations (mean value 7.9 lg g 1). Plot of shale-normalized REE + …

Photochemical stabilization of LLDPE/clay nanocomposites: towards durable nanocomposites

2008

This article reports a study of the chemical modifications of LLDPE/nanoblend nanocomposites exposed to UV light in conditions of artificially accelerated ageing and natural weathering. Analysis by infrared spectroscopy of the chemical modifications produced by photoageing shows that the presence of an organo-clay leads to the decrease of the oxidation induction time of the polymer (LLDPE), which results in lower durability of the nanocomposites. Protection against photooxidation was tested with different kinds of UV stabilizers and with a metal deactivator. It is shown that the metal deactivator is very efficient in stabilizing the nanocomposite since it totally cancels the prodegradant ef…

Role of clays in protecting adsorbed DNA against X-ray radiation

2004

The X-ray emission of the young Sun was much harder and intense than today and might have played a significant role in the evolution of complex organics in protoplanetary environments. We investigate the effects of soft X-rays on tryptophan molecules in aqueous solutions at room temperature. As results of the irradiation experiments we detect several light species indicative of fragmentation, together with large molecular structures such as tryptophan dipeptide and tripeptide. Complexification is more evident in H2O solution than in D2O, probably due to isotopic effects. The abundances of peptides depend on the irradiation dose and decrease with increasing energy deposition. Radicals such a…

A simple method to interpret the rheological behaviour of intercalated polymer nanocomposites

2016

Abstract Nanocomposites are a new class of polymer composites that exhibit an interesting combination of chemical, physical, thermal and mechanical properties. Only small amounts of nanofiller are sufficient to generate great variations of many properties. This work focuses on the rheological behaviour of the intercalated polymer nanocomposites in shear flow. The increase of the viscosity and the more pronounced non-Newtonian behaviour is interpreted simply considering the increase of volume of the inert phase caused by the intercalation of the macromolecules. Indeed, the volume of the intercalated tactoids increases with increasing the interlayer distance. On the other hand, the interlayer…

Olive mill wastewaters decontamination based on organo-nano-clay composites

2019

Abstract Green composites for environmental applications were successfully prepared by intercalation of the biosurfactant Quillaja saponin onto montmorillonite mineral clay on varying pH and surfactant/clay ratio. Equilibrium adsorption isotherms were constructed and the system was characterized by performing TGA and XRD analyses. The efficiency of the surfactant-modified clay in the removal of the organic content present in olive mill wastewaters (OMW) was evaluated by means of spectrophotometric measurements. The interest for this cogent issue comes from the consideration that, despite their high pollutant content, OMW can be considered as a potential resource of several organic compounds…
