Iron, as inorganic ion or as oxide, is widely used by biological systems in a myriad of biological functions (e.g., enzymatic, gene activation and/or regulation). In particular, marine organisms containing silica structures—diatoms and sponges—grow preferentially in the presence of iron. Using primary sponge cell culture from S. domuncula–primmorphs—as an in vitro model to study the Demospongiae spiculogenesis, we found the presence of agglomerates 50 nm in diameter exclusively inside sponge specialized cells called sclerocytes. Formation of spicules by sclerocytes from the freshwater spongeEphydatia muelleri in short-term cultures in vitro

Cells from the freshwater sponge Ephydatia muelleri were isolated by dissociating hatching gemmules. During the first 24 h the cells reaggregated, but the aggregates progressively disintegrated again to single cells, among which the spicule-forming sclerocytes were recognized. Such cultures were used to study spicule (megascleres) formation in vitro. The isolated sclerocytes formed the organic central axial filament onto which they deposited inorganic silicon. The size of the spicules (200 to 350 microns in length) as well as the rate of spicule formation (1 to 10 microns/h) under in vitro conditions were similar to the values measured in vivo. Management of Renal Angiomyolipoma: A Report of 14 Cases and Review of the Literature

14 patients with renal angiomyolipoma are presented. Two of them had tuberous sclerosis (TS) with synchronous bilateral and multiple tumors. Two other patients without TS also had multiple tumors in 1 kidney. More than half the patients were symptomatic (n = 8), 2 of them with spontaneous rupture of the tumor. Misdiagnosis, spontaneous rupture and tumor growth can be prevented by utilizing conservative, organ-sparing techniques. In cases of solitary kidneys with large and/or hemorrhagic angiomyolipoma, superselective arterial embolization is indicated.
Osteology and relationships ofEolacerta robusta, a lizard from the Middle Eocene of Germany (Reptilia, Squamata)

The osteology of the Eocene lizard Eolacerta robusta from Messel and Geiseltal is redescribed. Contrary to former opinions, Eolacerta does not possess body osteoderms, the pubis is typically lizard-like, the astragalus and calcaneum are fused, and the first cervical rib is distinctly curved posterolaterally. The suggestion that Eolacerta belongs to the modern family Lacertidae cannot be corroborated due to its many plesiomorphies and character incongruences, a view which is also supported by phylogenetic analysis. At present, Eolacerta cannot be assigned to any modern lizard family and is classified as Scleroglossa incertae sedis.
Clerodane diterpenoids from Salvia splendens.

Four new clerodane diterpenoids, salvisplendins A-D (1-4), have been isolated from an acetone extract of the flowers of SalVia splendens, together with an artifact (5), arising from salvisplendin D (4) by addition of diazomethane, and the already known clerodane olearin (6). The structures of the new compounds (1-5) were established mainly by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic studies and, in the case of salvisplendin A (1), by chemical correlation with splenolide B (7). Complete 1H and 13C NMR assignments for olearin (6), not published hitherto, are also reported.

Abstract It remains a challenging task to reconstruct water temperatures from Sr/Ca ratios of bivalve shells. Although in many aragonitic species, Sr/Ca is negatively correlated to temperature – which is expected based on abiogenic precipitation experiments, the incorporation of Sr into the shell of bivalves is strongly controlled by physiological processes and occurs away from the predicted thermodynamic equilibrium. Strontium-to-calcium ratios of aragonitic shells remain far below that of the ambient water. Combined shell growth pattern and oxygen isotope analysis has become a powerful approach in palaeoclimate and archaeological studies for reconstructing palaeoclimate conditions and littoral exploitation patterns, respectively.
