Using optical satellite and aerial imagery for automatic coastline mapping

2020

The continuous availability and rapid accessibility to multispectral data from satellite platforms within the Copernicus Programme represents a great opportunity for users in different fields of applications as: Agriculture, observation of coastal zones, monitoring land cover change. The aim of this paper is to identify a suitable method to map coastline using Sentinel-2 optical satellite image. The method provides the use of two indexes developed in remote sensing field for water environment: NDWI (Normalized difference water index) and MNDWI (Modified Normalized difference water index). Starting from the construction of maps of these indexes and, identifying appropriate threshold values, …

Evolution by mean curvature flow of Lagrangian spherical surfaces in complex Euclidean plane

2016

We describe the evolution under the mean curvature flow of embedded Lagrangian spherical surfaces in the complex Euclidean plane $\mathbb{C}^2$. In particular, we answer the Question 4.7 addressed in [Ne10b] by A. Neves about finding out a condition on a starting Lagrangian torus in $\mathbb{C}^2$ such that the corresponding mean curvature flow becomes extinct at finite time and converges after rescaling to the Clifford torus.

The γ5-problem and anomalies — A Clifford algebra approach

1990

Abstract It is shown that a strong correspondence between noncyclicity and anomalies exists. This allows, by fundamental properties of Clifford algebras, to build a simple and consistent scheme for treating γ 5 without using ( d −4)-dimensional objects

Generalized Bloch spheres form-qubit states

2006

m-Qubit states are imbedded in $\mathfrak{Cl}_{2^m}$ Clifford algebras. Their probability spectra then depend on $O(2m)$ or $O(2m+1)$ invariants. Parameter domains for $O(2m(+1))-$ vector and tensor configurations, generalizing the notion of a Bloch sphere, are derived.

Turonian-Maastrichtian biostratigraphy and isotope stratigraphy of the Kopet-Dagh Basin deposits, northeastern Neo-Tethys, Iran

2021

Abstract Planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy and isotope stratigraphy analyses of Turonian-Maastrichtian deposits have been carried out in the western part of the Kopet-Dagh Basin. The identification of the planktonic foraminiferal assemblages has led to the recognition of twelve Upper Cretaceous zones (Helvetoglobotruncana helvetica Zone to the Contusotruncana contusa-Abathomphalus mayaroensis zone) from the Tethyan realm. The obtained stable carbon isotope profile correlates with other reference curves, revealing many Late Cretaceous events including the Hitchwood, Navigation, Light Point, East Cliff, White Fall, Late Campanian Event (LCE), Campanian-Maastrichtian Boundary Event (CMB…

Extended-order algebras as a generalization of posets

2011

Motivated by the recent study of several researchers on extended-order algebras, introduced by C. Guido and P. Toto as a possible common framework for the majority of algebraic structures used in many-valued mathematics, the paper focuses on the properties of homomorphisms of the new structures, considering extended-order algebras as a generalization of partially ordered sets. The manuscript also introduces the notion of extended-relation algebra providing a new framework for developing the theory of rough sets.

Before and after Science.

A continuing debate in elementary geometry: the Simson–Wallace line and its many generalisations

2016

For some years now the importance has been appraised of demonstrating elementary geometry to pupils and future teachers through interactive geometry software. This fits within a view of the teaching of geometry that stresses a hands-on approach, thanks to which it is possible to teach the subject via historical syllabi, touching on ideas from different origins and of a transversal nature. The debate about the role of elementary geometry in the last 30 years is connected to this, with contributions by scholars such as Yaglom, Scimemi and Betti. In the perspective of following a sequence of elementary geometry constructions historically connected with each other, we suggest a path that analys…

A Geometric Algebra Based Distributional Model to Encode Sentences Semantics

2013

Word space models are used to encode the semantics of natural language elements by means of high dimensional vectors [23]. Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) methodology [15] is well known and widely used for its generalization properties. Despite of its good performance in several applications, the model induced by LSA ignores dynamic changes in sentences meaning that depend on the order of the words, because it is based on a bag of words analysis. In this chapter we present a technique that exploits LSA-based semantic spaces and geometric algebra in order to obtain a sub-symbolic encoding of sentences taking into account the words sequence in the sentence. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidel…

Influence of the behaviour of soft rocks on cliff evolution

2010

Two cases, of evolution of mor phostructure of cliffs in soft rocks like tuff and calcarenite, respectively outcropping in the Cape of Posillipo in Campania and in the Agrigento town and Valley of Tem- ples in Sicily, are analyzed on the basis of mor phologic characteristics of the sites, mesostructural survey and mechanical characterisation of the lithotypes. The cultural and environmental heritage of these sites is heavily hastened by instability processes, due to the super position of different lithotypes, the presence of dis- continuities and differential erosion and deformation of bedrock. Both the rock masses are characterized by variability of the cohesion and the cementation, and we…
