The contribution frames the essays studies research and projects published in issue 9 of AGATHÓN on ‘The SecondLife of the Built Environment’ an interesting topic for universities businesses and industry. Climate changes excessive use of soil renewable resources ever-increasing production of waste the current pandemic emergency and the global socio-economic crisis have in fact entered our daily life. Even if these are tragic issues they can be somehow seized as an opportunity to rethink the way we live and our world. In this ‘revolutionary’ (Floridi 2020) and ‘polycrisis’ (Losasso 2020) context specifically referring to the building industry the Academy the Research and Industry worlds are called to give answers – based on sustainability and the principles of the Green Deal but also and mostly of the new Bauhaus – that can encourage reconsiderations and re-orientations of processes and products new projects on places buildings objects and materials able to positively affect the governance of the global change that our planet and humanity need able to give a ‘new life’ to the built and/or transformed environment at any scaleSettore ICAR/12 - Tecnologia Dell'Architettura

Sustainable Social Housing in Temperate Areas. Italy and Brazil: the use of vegetation as a retrofit strategy

2014

In quest…

Introducing Thermal Inertia for Monitoring Snowmelt Processes With Remote Sensing

2019

Thermal inertia has been successfully used in remote sensing applications that span from geology, geomorphology to hydrology. In this paper, we propose the use of thermal inertia for describing snow dynamics. Two different formulations of thermal inertia were tested using experimental and simulated data related to snowpack dynamics. Experimental data were acquired between 2012 and 2017 from an automatic weather station located in the western Italian Alps at 2,160 m. Simulations were obtained using the one‐dimensional multilayer Crocus model. Results provided evidences that snowmelt phases can be recognized, and average snowpack density can be estimated reasonably well from thermal inertia o…

Interaction of Ni/SiO2 with thiophene.

2009

Abstract The interaction between Ni/SiO 2 (18 wt%) and thiophene was studied by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and in a fixed-bed reactor. The samples were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation and reaction was realized in hydrogen flow at 280–360 °C in the presence of 10–40 mbar of thiophene. It is found that sulfidation of Ni is not complete in TGA experiments and the maximum achievable transformation degree depends not only on the temperature and thiophene pressure, but also on the sample weight and the gas flow rate. The maximum transformation degree is shown to vary reversibly when conditions are changed. Analysis of the reaction products during sulfidation in a fixed-bed reac…

Improving the high temperature oxidation resistance of pure titanium by shot-peening treatments

2017

International audience; Shot-peening (SP) treatments have shown their capacity to improve the oxidation resistance of titanium and zirconium thanks to the large compressive stresses and the surface hardening induced by this mechanical process. However, shot-peening treatments can produce a surface chemical deposit, which can modify the high temperature oxidation resistance. Here, we study pure titanium samples shot-peened with different type of balls: tungsten carbide, alumina or glass. The oxidation behavior was studied at 700 °C in dry air by thermo gravimetric analysis for short isotherm oxidation periods up to 100 h. Also, long oxidation tests (3000 h) at 700 °C were performed with an i…

Reaction of thiophene with mono- and bimetallic Ni–Co particles supported on γ-Al2O3 and HDS activities of obtained sulfides

2009

Abstract Reaction between thiophene and M/γ-Al2O3 (20 wt.%, M = Ni, Co, 2Ni–Co and 2Co–Ni) was studied by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and by sulfidation in a fixed bed microreactor. The samples were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation followed by drying and reduction in hydrogen flow at 450 °C. Formation of bimetallic particles in samples containing both Ni and Co was confirmed by HRTEM with EDX analysis. The reaction with thiophene (20 or 40 mbar) was done at 360 °C in hydrogen atmosphere. TGA of the reaction with thiophene revealed that the initial rate of sulfidation drops sharply when going from Ni/γ-Al2O3 to Co/γ-Al2O3 (by a factor of 40 under used conditions). It follows…

Combined effects of thermal conditions and food availability on thermal tolerance of the marine bivalve, Perna viridis

2018

Abstract Organisms can mitigate the effects of long term variation in environmental conditions through acclimation, which involves changes in various physiological responses. To elucidate the possible effects of temperature and food concentrations on acclimation capacity, physiological responses of the mussel, Perna viridis, were measured after individuals were held for six weeks under varying temperatures and food availability. Warm-acclimated mussels experiencing higher food levels had significantly greater upper thermal limits than those maintained on lower food levels. In contrast, the upper thermal limits of cold-acclimated mussels were not affected by food levels. For warm-acclimated …

Differences of raw cork quality in productive cork oak woods in Sicily in relation to stand density

2010

Differences of raw cork quality, in terms of thickness and porosity, were observed in productive cork oak (Quercus suber L.) stands in the Nebrodi and Iblei mountains of Sicily in relation to stand density. Five study areas were chosen across a range of different stand density satisfying specific sampling requirements among two managed cork oak stands. Analysis of variance using Fisher-Snedecor's F test (p<0,05) were used to identify statistically significant differences of cork quality and sylvicultural, dendrometric and cork stripping parameters between study areas within each stand and also between stands. Relationships between cork quality and sylvicultural and dendrometric parameters w…
