Vines have different climbing strategies; one type, called clinging vines, has developed a specialized structure, the adhesive pad that secretes a sticky substance that adheres to almost any substrate. In this study on the climbing fig, Ficus pumila L., we report on the developmental anatomy of clusters of adventitious roots that become transformed into this unique structure. Clustered adventitious roots in F. pumila are initiated in pairs on either side of a vascular bundle at the 2nd to 3rd internodes of young stems. Physical exercise is considered an effective means to stimulate bone osteogenesis in osteoporotic patients. The authors reviewed the current literature to define the most appropriate features of exercise for increasing bone density in osteoporotic patients. Two types emerged: (1) weight-bearing aerobic exercises, i.e., walking, stair climbing, jogging, and Tai Chi. Walking alone did not appear to improve bone mass; however it is able to limit its progressive loss. The incidence of hip fractures is growing in all Western societies. The mobility of hip fracture patients does not return to the pre-fracture level even 2 years after fracture. One reason for mobility limitation may be the persistent muscle weakness on the fractured leg. The purpose of this randomized controlled study was to examine whether 12-week muscle strength and power training twice a week has an effect on mobility in 60–85-year-old hip fracture patients. The present study determined the effects of muscular endurance strength training on maximum strength and power, functional capacity, muscle activation and hypertrophy in older men and women. Eighty-one men and women acted as an intervention group while 22 acted as non-training controls (age range 64–75 y).
