Characterization of Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae Clinical Isolates in Al Thawra University Hospital, Sana'a, Yemen
2020
International audience; Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the resistance mechanisms of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae clinical strains recovered from Al Thawra University Hospital, Sana'a, Yemen. Methods: A total of 27 isolates showing decreased susceptibility to carbapenems were obtained from different clinical specimens in Al Thawra Hospital, Sana'a, Yemen. Strains were identified by Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time-Of-Flight spectroscopy. Susceptibility to antibiotics was determined by the disk diffusion method on Mueller Hinton agar. Carbapenemases-encoding genes, extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs), and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance…
Characterization of a T-cell-derived mast cell costimulatory activity (MCA) that acts synergistically with interleukin 3 and interleukin 4 on the gro…
1990
The proliferation of mucosal mast cells (MMC) depends on the presence of interleukin 3 (IL 3) and can be further enhanced by interleukin 4 (IL 4). The supernatant of a TH2 cell clone (ST2/K.9) stimulated by concanavalin A was found to contain a factor, provisionally termed mast cell costimulatory activity (MCA), that substantially enhances the proliferation of MMC promoted by a combination of IL 3 and IL 4. In comparison to other lymphokines MCA is rather resistant to tryptic digestion but is very sensitive to pH values lower than 6.0 and to organic solvents. Chromatographic fractionation of MCA revealed that activity is associated with protein(s) or glycoprotein(s) of 35 to 40 kDa. Partial…

A few examples of artistic activity in space exploration are reported and hypotheses are made as to what a museum on another planet would be like. Considerations are also made about the value of the original piece of art today.
Secondary Circulation of Tropical Cyclones in Vertical Wind Shear: Lagrangian Diagnostic and Pathways of Environmental Interaction
2015
Abstract This study introduces a Lagrangian diagnostic of the secondary circulation of tropical cyclones (TCs), here defined by those trajectories that contribute to latent heat release in the region of high inertial stability of the TC core. This definition accounts for prominent asymmetries and transient flow features. Trajectories are mapped from the three-dimensional physical space to the (two dimensional) entropy–temperature space. The mass flux vector in this space subsumes the thermodynamic characteristics of the secondary circulation. The Lagrangian diagnostic is then employed to further analyze the impact of vertical wind shear on TCs in previously published idealized numerical exp…

0307 : QSOX1 has a protective role in the myocardium face to acute stress
2015
IntroductionQSOX1 was identified as a plasma biomarker of acute heart failure (AHF). QSOX1 being a sulfhydryl oxidase, our aim was to decipher the role of QSOX1 in the heart face to an AHF event.MethodsAHF was provoked by IP injections of Isoproterenol (ISO, 300mg/kg/12h) for 2 days in mice (C57Bl/6 J) whereas control (C) received NaCl 9‰. Mice were killed at day 3, after echocardiography. QSOX1 KO (C57Bl/6 J) mice were generated using a QSOX1tm1a embryonic stem cell clone (KOMP). The KO construct contains a promoter-less lacZ gene under the control of the QSOX1 regulatory sequences. The mRNA levels were analyzed by RT-qPCR. The cellular level of oxidative stress was detected by using DHE. …
Sequence type 101 (ST101) as the predominant carbapenem-non-susceptible Klebsiella pneumoniae clone in an acute general hospital in Italy.
2012
Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the most common multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative organisms worldwide, responsible for high morbidity and mortality both in hospitals and alternative healthcare settings. Recently, increasing use of carbapenems has promoted the emergence and dissemination of carbapenem-non-susceptible MDR K. pneumoniae strains. All of the CNSKP strains isolated between January 2009 and December 2011 in the General Hospital of Prato (Prato, Italy) were studied. Our findings indicate that, unlike previously reported by other authors from different regions of Italy, K. pneumoniae producing KPC-2 and belonging to ST101 have been established in the area of Prato, Tuscany, It…
Global Distribution of Shigella sonnei Clones
2011
To investigate global epidemiology of Shigella sonnei, we performed multilocus variable number tandem repeat analysis of 1,672 isolates obtained since 1943 from 50 countries on 5 continents and the Pacific region. Three major clonal groups were identified; 2 were globally spread. Type 18 and its derivatives have circulated worldwide in recent decades.
Anti-plant Defense Response Strategies Mediated by the Secondary Symbiont
2019
Bacterial symbionts are omnipresent in insects, particularly aphids, and often exert important effects on the host ecology; however, examples of symbionts that mediate herbivore-plant interactions remain limited. Here, three clones with identical genetic backgrounds were established: a Hamiltonella defensa-free clone, H. defensa-infected clone and H. defensa-cured clone. H. defensa infection was found to increase the fitness of Sitobion miscanthi by increasing the total number of offspring and decreasing the age of first reproduction. Furthermore, gene expression studies and phytohormone measurement showed that feeding by the Hamiltonella-infected clone suppressed the salicylic acid (SA)- a…
