Violenza di prossimità

2013

The essay reflects on the effects that the loss of power on the part of the male gender determines today in male-female relationships. Il saggio riflette sugli effetti che la perdita di potere maschile nell'ambito pubblico, determina oggi una sorta di revanche da parte defli stessi all'interno delle relazioni uomo-donna

The origin of the self-compatible almond ‘Supernova’

2008

The almond cultivar 'Supernova' is reported in the literature as a late-flowering self-compatible mutant, obtained by the irradiation of the early-flowering self-incompatible cultivar 'Fascionello'. Our work to investigate the molecular basis of this form of self-compatibility has called into question the origin of 'Supernova'. Test selfing was performed both on 'Supernova' and on the accession of 'Fascionello' from which it was derived - 'Fascionello-Rome'. Both proved self-compatible. Amplification of S-RNase alleles, using consensus primers from the signal peptide region to the second conserved region of the S-RNase gene and primers specific for allele S f , confirmed 'Supernova' and 'Fa…

[Spanish medical center collaboration on smoking research from 1999 through 2003 according to the Science Citation Index].

2007

OBJECTIVE To analyze the network structure of collaboration between medical centers sharing authorship of scientific articles on smoking. MATERIAL AND METHODS Articles reporting smoking research by authors from 2 or more Spanish medical centers between 1999 and the end of 2003 were identified through the Science Citation Index. The network of collaboration behind the research was analyzed and the most important measures of centrality were compared. To display the data, scientometric maps were constructed using UCINET and NETDRAW network analysis tools. RESULTS Thirty-five Spanish medical centers (29 hospitals and 6 health care clinics) in 8 autonomous communities were involved in 21 collabo…

2015

Since the percentage of single adults is steadily increasing, the reasons for this development have become a matter of growing interest. Hereby, an individual’s attachment style has come under close scrutiny in the context of its possible association to the partnership status. In the current study, a comparison of an individual’s attachment style, gender, age, education, and income was carried out in regard to the partnership status. Furthermore, an analysis of variance was computed to compare the attachment style within different groups. A sample of 1,676 representative participants between 18 and 60 years was investigated (M = 41.0, SD = 12.3); 54% were female, and 40% were single. Attach…

Grammatical changes caused by contact between Livonian and Latvian

2014

The article provides insight into the process of various grammatical changes in Livonian and Latvian that have taken place as a result of prolonged contact between the languages. Livonian is strongly influenced by Latvian at different levels due to the close contact between the speakers of two languages; it is necessary to note that speakers of Livonian were bilinguals for a long time. It is clear that Livonian has affected Latvian in a similar way. The process of mutual borrowings can be observed most clearly in the vocabulary, especially in dialects; however, there are changes that have occurred in the phonetics and grammar as well. Different changes can be found as a result of mutual inf…

Closed Theories, Falsificationism and Non-Cumulative Progress

2020

It is argued that scientific progress occurs not with the cumulative growth of knowledge or when theories get closer to the truth but with discovering new domains and new theories that fit these domains. This horizontal view on the direction of scientific progress (in contrast to vertical, when we aim to get from here to the abstract and ephemeral truth) allows avoiding traditional objections posed by the incommensurability thesis and pessimistic induction, namely, that radical theory changes leave no room for progress. According to this perspective, the discovery of quantum mechanics as a new field of inquiry is a progress in itself, since this discovery had opened up a new distinctive dom…

When does Regression discontinuity design work? Evidence from random election outcomes

2018

We use elections data in which a large number of ties in vote counts between candidates are resolved via a lottery to study the personal incumbency advantage. We benchmark non‐experimental regression discontinuity design (RDD) estimates against the estimate produced by this experiment that takes place exactly at the cutoff. The experimental estimate suggests that there is no personal incumbency advantage. In contrast, conventional local polynomial RDD estimates suggest a moderate and statistically significant effect. Bias‐corrected RDD estimates that apply robust inference are, however, in line with the experimental estimate. Therefore, state‐of‐the‐art implementation of RDD can meet the re…

Klinische Bedeutung des Hepatitis-B-Virus-DNS-Nachweises im Serum von Kindern mit chronischer Hepatitis B

1992

206 sera from 172 children with chronic hepatitis B infection were tested for HBV DNA by dot blot hybridization. 111 were positive and 95 negative for HBV DNA. 103 (78.6%) of the positive patients had HBeAg and 5 (7.7%) anti-HBe. In 60 (92.3%) of the anti-HBe positive sera no HBV DNA could be detected. Children with elevated liver enzymes had HBV DNA in 80.1%, whereas in 71.6% of the chronic HBsAg carriers with normal liver enzymes no HBV DNA was found. In 87 of the 95 dot blot negative patients polymerase chain reaction was performed. 73 (83.9%) children of this group were HBV DNA positive. All HBeAg positive patients and those with elevated aminotransferases had HBV DNA in their serum. 56…

Flow perturbations: a tool to study and characterize heterogeneous deformation

2005

The classification of the myriad of small-scale structures that are used in tectonic analysis is presently based on their geometry, which makes it difficult to discover transitions and groups amongst them. An alternative would be to classify structures according to the flow type by which they form, but this is difficult. Although most structures form by heterogeneous flow, modelling studies are often focussed on bulk homogeneous flow, since the mathematical treatment of heterogeneous flow is cumbersome. Also, heterogeneous deformation patterns seem to occur in as many types as there are small-scale structures. This paper introduces the use of the geometry of flow perturbations to improve ou…

Central extensions of the families of quasi-unitary Lie algebras

1998

The most general possible central extensions of two whole families of Lie algebras, which can be obtained by contracting the special pseudo-unitary algebras su(p,q) of the Cartan series A_l and the pseudo-unitary algebras u(p,q), are completely determined and classified for arbitrary p,q. In addition to the su(p,q) and u({p,q}) algebras, whose second cohomology group is well known to be trivial, each family includes many non-semisimple algebras; their central extensions, which are explicitly given, can be classified into three types as far as their properties under contraction are involved. A closed expression for the dimension of the second cohomology group of any member of these families …
