Scalable Monitoring System for Clouds

2013

Although cloud computing has become an important topic over the last couple of years, the development of cloud-specific monitoring systems has been neglected. This is surprising considering their importance for metering services and, thus, being able to charge customers. In this paper we introduce a monitoring architecture that was developed and is currently implemented in the EASI-CLOUDS project. The demands on cloud monitoring systems are manifold. Regular checks of the SLAs and the precise billing of the resource usage, for instance, require the collection and converting of infrastructure readings in short intervals. To ensure the scalability of the whole cloud, the monitoring system mus…

Unified computing facility design based on open source software

2012

The article describes e-infrastructure development in Latvia and migration to national Cloud as regional partner facility (RPF) in European Union (EU). In Latvia many public and private Computing Clouds is in operation and problem is how to integrate these resources as one RPF and how to design one unified computing facility that is used for many different applications. The authors offer their solution at Cloud software as a Service and Hardware as a Service level which is based on usage of open source packaged bundles.

Reference Design for Smart Collaborative Telehealth and Telecare Services Based on IoT Technologies

2015

The demographic development shows aging societies through-out the globe, leading to higher demands on the health and care systems due to age-related disabilities, chronic diseases, etc. Telehealth and telecare services for more efficient support of health and care providers are needed, which can be significantly improved by the continuous technological developments in areas such as sensor devices, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud services, and data analysis. This paper addresses the potential of selected emerging technologies to make eHealth systems smarter, more collaborative and more efficient. As a result of the analysis of the most promising technological trends, characteristics of futur…

Heavy Gas Dispersion Modelling Over a Topographically Complex Mesoscale: A CFD Based Approach

2005

Abstract: Potentially dangerous events involving heavy gas dispersion and their severe consequences have been largely publicized by the media. Simplified models have been widely applied to describe the effects of these accidents. However, most simplified models deal with flat terrain scenarios and are based on quite crude simplifications of the complex phenomenology involved. In this paper the possibility of simulating the dispersion of heavy gas clouds over a large topographically complex area (tens of km) by a general purpose computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code is investigated. The aim is that of setting up a tool able to produce a realistic description of such dispersion processes, w…

Pattern formation in clouds via Turing instabilities

2020

Pattern formation in clouds is a well-known feature, which can be observed almost every day. However, the guiding processes for structure formation are mostly unknown, and also theoretical investigations of cloud patterns are quite rare. From many scientific disciplines the occurrence of patterns in non-equilibrium systems due to Turing instabilities is known, i.e. unstable modes grow and form spatial structures. In this study we investigate a generic cloud model for the possibility of Turing instabilities. For this purpose, the model is extended by diffusion terms. We can show that for some cloud models, i.e special cases of the generic model, no Turing instabilities are possible. However,…

On the scavenging of SO2 by large and small rain drops: V. A wind tunnel and theoretical study of the desorption of SO2 from water drops containing S…

1993

An experimental and theoretical study has been carried out to investigate the rate of desorption of SO2 from water drops falling at terminal velocity in air. The experiments were carried out in the Mainz vertical wind tunnel in which water drops of various sizes containing S(IV) in various concentrations were freely suspended in the vertical airstream of the tunnel. The results of these experiments were compared with the predictions of three theoretical models, and with the experiments of Walceket al. This comparison shows that the predictions of the diffusion model of Kronig and Brink in the formulation given by Walcek and Pruppacher agree well with the experimental results for all relevan…
