The present review is an outcome of discussions at the ICES-PICES Symposium on Drivers of Dynamics of Small Pelagic Fish convened in Victoria, B.C., Canada in spring 2017.-- This review is a first contribution of a new international Working Group on Small Pelagic Fish started jointly by ICES (WGSPF) and PICES (WG43) to continue world-wide collaboration to advance knowledge on the drivers of populations of SPF.

Laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of two strains of Microcystis aeruginosa and a strain of Nodularia spumigena on the survival of Eurytemora affinis (Copepoda) and on the embryonic and larval development of the Baltic spring-spawning herring Clupea harengus membras. The trials were made in water taken from Parnu Bay, at a salinity of 3.7–5.1 psu, a constant temperature (15°C ± 1°C in trials with Eurytemora and herring embryos; 18°C ± 2°C with herring larvae), and an oxygen concentration of 8.8–10.4 ppm. The growth and emigration of Hystherothylacium aduncum in laboratory-reared herring larvae Clupea harengus was studied. Experimental infections of 36-day-old herring larvae resulted in 126 hosts infected with 306 H. aduncum larvae. Regression analyses showed a significant worm emigration from the rectum to the head of the fish, accompanied by an increase in worm body length. The emigration was independent of worm intensity, which suggests an ontogenetic process. Some worms departed from this pattern by moving posteriorly or by penetrating into the muscle, and in 5 cases, the larvae were observed to leave living fish. Fish larvae data collected in year 2009 were used to examine the effects of particular environmental conditions on the structure of larvalassemblages in two oligotrophic Mediterranean areas (the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea and the Strait of Sicily). For this purpose, relationships with environmental variables (temperature, salinity and fluorescence), zooplankton biomass, water circulation and bathymetry are discussed. Hydrodynamic conditions resulted very differently between two study areas. The Southern Tyrrhenian Sea was characterized by moderate shallow circulation compared to the Strait of Sicily. Abstract One-year old rainbow trout (initially 350–670 g) were fed for 15 weeks diets containing various amounts of water (23–67%). This was achieved by replacing fish meal with Baltic herring. The growth of rainbow trout, whether measured as wet weight, protein or energy, was impaired when 50–55% dietary water was fed. The fish compensated for increasing dietary water content by consuming more diet so that the dry matter intake of the diets with 23 and 67% water were equal. Partitioning of growth into protein and lipid as well as protein and energy retention efficiencies were unaffected by dietary water. Effects of feeding frequency on growth and food utilisation of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed low-fat herring or dry pellets

Abstract One-year-old rainbow trout (weight range 400–700 g) were fed for 18 weeks on low-fat herring or commercial dry pellets 1, 2 or 4 times in a day. Quadratic regression analysis indicated that at least three feedings were required for maximum growth and that fish fed a dry diet could benefit from even more frequent feeding. The proportion of lipid in growth increased with increased number of feedings, but the protein content was not affected (mean 18.6% protein wet basis). Food consumption (dry weight) was affected in a similar manner for both diets and its maximum occurred at slightly higher frequency than for maximum growth.
