Semisupervised nonlinear feature extraction for image classification
2012
Feature extraction is of paramount importance for an accurate classification of remote sensing images. Techniques based on data transformations are widely used in this context. However, linear feature extraction algorithms, such as the principal component analysis and partial least squares, can address this problem in a suboptimal way because the data relations are often nonlinear. Kernel methods may alleviate this problem only when the structure of the data manifold is properly captured. However, this is difficult to achieve when small-size training sets are available. In these cases, exploiting the information contained in unlabeled samples together with the available training data can si…
A structural cluster kernel for learning on graphs
2012
In recent years, graph kernels have received considerable interest within the machine learning and data mining community. Here, we introduce a novel approach enabling kernel methods to utilize additional information hidden in the structural neighborhood of the graphs under consideration. Our novel structural cluster kernel (SCK) incorporates similarities induced by a structural clustering algorithm to improve state-of-the-art graph kernels. The approach taken is based on the idea that graph similarity can not only be described by the similarity between the graphs themselves, but also by the similarity they possess with respect to their structural neighborhood. We applied our novel kernel in…
Seismic microzonation by means of cluster analysis
2019
The identification of areas with uniform behaviour in seismic perspective is a very complex task that involves the simultaneous assessment of many parameters. In this paper we propose an automatic procedure for the seismic microzonation based on cluster analysis and performed by means of an agglomerative hierarchical algorithm. It exploits a proximity matrix specifically defined on the parameters space and the average linkage criteria. The procedure has been used to carry out the expedite seismic microzonation of some high seismic hazard areas, only using the data inferred by the extensive application of the HVSR technique. The results of the clustering procedures have been assessed from a …

Cytochrome b sequences of ancient cattle and wild ox support phylogenetic complexity in the ancient and modern bovine populations.
2009
Mitochondrial DNA has been the traditional marker for the study of animal domestication, as its high mutation rate allows for the accumulation of molecular diversity within the time frame of domestic history. Additionally, it is exclusively maternally inherited and haplotypes become part of the domestic gene pool via actual capture of a female animal rather than by interbreeding with wild populations. Initial studies of British aurochs identified a haplogroup, designated P, which was found to be highly divergent from all known domestic haplotypes over the most variable portion of the D-loop. Additional analysis of a large and geographically representative sample of aurochs from northern and…

Segmentación y comportamiento de lealtad de los pacientes: un análisis clúster en los departamentos de salud de la Comunidad Valenciana
2018
Under a health ser vice framework marked by the territory segmentation and the coexistence of public administration and publicprivate ventures, it makes sense to analyze and classif y the health ser vice departments by considering the following objectives: to know the way patients actually behave when the choice of the ser vice place is up to themselves; to adapt the ser vice offer to the patient’s preferences; and to organize health ser vice based on the territory location, thus considering its influence on the management model. Secondary data from the Valencian Community (over two million data) are used in the cluster analysis of the patient loyal behavior (entering , retention and drop ou…

Looking for representative fit models for apparel sizing
2014
This paper is concerned with the generation of optimal fit models for use in apparel design. Representative fit models or prototypes are important for defining a meaningful sizing system. However, there is no agreement among apparel manufacturers and each one has their own prototypes and size charts i.e. there is a lack of standard sizes in garments from different apparel manufacturers. We propose two algorithms based on a new hierarchical partitioning around medoids clustering method originally developed for gene expression data. We are concerned with a different application; therefore, the dissimilarity between the objects has to be different and must be designed to deal with anthropometr…
Clustering Analysis of Questionnaire for Ph.D. studies in Electrical and Information Engineering in Europe
2013
The ELLEIEC ERASMUS thematic network was running from October 2008 to September 2011. This project deals with several aspects linked to Lifelong Learning in Electrical and Information Engineering in Europe. Within this project, Task 4 is dedicated to “Implementation issues across EIE”. The idea of this task was to see how we can, thanks to implementation using Programs available from the European Commission, and associates (ERASMUS, CD, ERASMUS-MUNDUS, ATLANTIS, IP) to emphasize and develop mobility and cross-recognition. Another aspect, strongly connected, was to analyze the existing and possible interactions of Higher Education Institutions and Lifelong Learning. The European consortium o…
