Electromagnetic fission of $^{238}$U at 600 and 1000 MeV per nucleon

1995

Electromagnetic fission of238U projectiles at E/A =600 and 1000 MeV was studied with the ALADIN spectrometer at the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS. Seven different targets (Be, C, Al, Cu, In, Au and U) were used. By considering only those fission events where the two charges added up to 92, most of the nuclear interactions were excluded. The nuclear contributions to the measured fission cross sections were determined by extrapolating from beryllium to the heavier targets with the concept of factorization. The obtained cross sections for electromagnetic fission are well reproduced by extended Weizsacker-Williams calculations which include E1 and E2 excitations. The asymmetry of the fission fragme…

Mass and charge distributions in the very asymmetric mass region of the neutron induced fission of

Abstract The mass-separator Lohengrin was used to measure the yields of the light fission products with A=74−85 and their nuclear charge and kinetic energy distributions from the odd- Z compound nucleus 239 Np ∗ formed by double capture of thermal neutrons. The mass yield distribution reveals an influence of the fragment shell with N=50 affecting also the nuclear charge and kinetic energy distributions. An odd–even effect for protons is found in the very asymmetric mass division, increasing from 4% to 35% with increasing fission asymmetry. Neutron and fragment yields in proton-induced fission of 238U at intermediate energies

The primary fission fragment mass and kinetic energy distributions, and neutron multiplicities as function of fragment mass have been measured in the proton-induced fission of 238 U at energies Ep ¼ 20, 35, 50 and 60 MeV using time-of-flight technique. Pre-scission and post-scission neutron multiplicities have been extracted from double differential distributions. The fragment mass dependence of the post-scission neutron multiplicities reveals the gross nuclear shell structure effect even at the higher proton energies we measured. Nuclear potentials for sub-barrier fusion and cluster decay inC14,O18+Pb208systems

Near-barrier fusion excitation functions for the $^{14}\mathrm{C}$ and $^{18}\mathrm{O}+^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ reactions have been analyzed in the framework of the barrier-passing model using different forms of the nuclear potential and the phenomenology of a fluctuating barrier. The best-fit fusion potentials were used to estimate cluster decay probabilities from the corresponding ground states of Ra and Th (i.e., for the inverse decay process). The analysis supports the ``\ensuremath{\alpha}-decay-like'' scenario for carbon and oxygen emission from these nuclei.

Pre- and post-scission neutron emission in the reaction180Hf(40Ar, fission) atE lab=216 MeV

Neutron and fission fragment spectra following the180Hf(40Ar,f) reaction atE lab=216MeV were measured. The following neutron total, pre- and post-scission multiplicities were extracted:M tot =7.2±1.3,M pre =2.7±0.9,M post =4.5±0.9. The average temperature parameters of the neutron spectra areT pre=(1.63±0.16) MeV andT post=(1.14±0.26)MeV. The mean total kinetic energy of the fission fragments is TKE=(166±10) MeV and the measured width is σTKE=17.3MeV. The width of the fragment mass distribution is σ A =18.3u. Fission fragments from the reaction237Np(μ−,γ,f) have been measured in coincidence with muonic X-rays. The efficiency of the fission fragment detector is determined from (μ−,γ,f)-data of the same experiment. Neck fragmentation in fission and quasifission of heavy and superheavy nuclei

The generalized approach is proposed for the ternary fission and the neck fragmentation of the dinuclear system formed in the heavy ion quasifission reactions. The light-charged-particles accompanied the fission and quasifission are the valuable probes for studies of the dynamics of the hyperdeformed nuclear configurations with neck. The developed model describes well the light-charged-particle emission probabilities and their mass distributions in the ternary fission of actinide nuclei. (e,e'f) Coincidence experiments on 235U and 238U

Abstract Coincidence experiments for (e, e'f) on the actinide nuclei 235 U and 238 U have been performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI A) concentrating on three subjects: multipole strength distributions and form factors for the lowest multipolarities, the mass split in the fission decay of various giant multipole resonances, and the separation of near barrier fission channels. Data were taken at four values of momentum transfer ( q eff ≈ 0.20, 0.28, 0.53, and 0.71 fm −1 for 238 U, q eff ≈ 0.20, 0.44, 0.57, and 0.71 fm −1 for 235 U) for excitation energies ω = 4–22 MeV. Manifestations of Clustering in Fission of Excited Actinides

A new, graphical way of extracting important physical information from the total kinetic-energy—mass (TKE—M) distributions of the nuclear reaction products is presented. The resulting images indicate for the first time the presence of the Ni—Mo and Ge—Mo fission modes in the fission of Np nuclei at intermediate excitation energies.
