Investigations on the photoelectron conversion efficiency of NaI(Tl) counters

Abstract The photoelectron conversion efficiency of NaI(Tl) detectors has been measured by counting single photoelectron pulses of the detector output pulse train on a very fast storage oscilloscope. This result is compared with those obtained by the measurement of the achievable time resolution using the first photoelectron triggering technique.

Linear Nuclei: A Density Functional Interpretation

We show that linear shape isomers of small even-even nuclei exist with nearly any internucleon interactions. The shapes of the linear isomers look like chains of alpha-particles, but single-particle spectrum reveals that alpha-particle interpretation is not needed. Indeed, the same shapes are obtained even with noninteracting particles in a rectangular cavity. Linear shape isomers are shown to exist also in metal clusters.

A Møller polarimeter for CW and pulsed intermediate energy electron beams

The Moller polarimeter was mainly designed for the cw electron beam of the Mainz microtron (MAMI). The described polarimeter covers an energy range between 25 and 185 MeV and can relatively simply be upgraded to the maximum MAMI energy of 840 MeV. The Moller-scattered electrons are momentum-analyzed in the defocusing plane of a quadrupole magnet and both Moller electrons can be detected in coincidence for symmetrical scattering with ⊖cm=90°. All polarization components of the electron beam can be measured by suitable choices of the orientation of the target polarization. Status and Prospects of Top-Quark Physics

The top quark is the heaviest elementary particle observed to date. Its large mass of about 173 GeV/c^2 makes the top quark act differently than other elementary fermions, as it decays before it hadronises, passing its spin information on to its decay products. In addition, the top quark plays an important role in higher-order loop corrections to standard model processes, which makes the top quark mass a crucial parameter for precision tests of the electroweak theory. Exchange currents in the deuteron

The present status of exchange currents and their contribution to deuteron disintegration by real and virtual photons is reviewed. The importance of the Siegert theorem for electric transitions is stressed. Various experiments in photoabsorption, electron and photon scattering with respect to influences of exchange currents are discussed.

Our Penning trap experiment aims at a direct high-precision measurement of the proton g-factor. We present the experimental setup and the measurement technique using the continuous Stern-Gerlach effect. Recent test measurements with a single proton stored in a Penning trap with a strong magnetic bottle and a new toroidal detection system are discussed. For a stringent test of the CPT symmetry the described technique can also be applied to the antiproton.

Aluminum cluster anions: Photoelectron spectroscopy andab initiosimulations

Atomic structures and geometries, electronic structure, and temperature-dependent photoelectron spectra of ${\mathrm{Al}}_{N}^{\ensuremath{-}} (N=19\ensuremath{-}102)$ clusters are studied both theoretically via ab initio local-density-functional simulations, and experimentally with high-resolution measurements. The use of a theoretically well-defined energy shift in conjunction with a generalized Koopmans' theorem enables direct comparisons between the calculated density of states and the experimental photoelectron spectrum. A decade of SN 1993J : discovery of radio wavelength effects in the expansion rate

We studied the growth of the shell-like radio structure of supernova SN 1993J in M 81 from September 1993 to October 2003 with very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations at the wavelengths of 3.6, 6, and 18 cm. We developed a method to accurately determine the outer radius (R) of any circularly symmetric compact radio structure such as SN 1993J. The source structure of SN 1993J remains circularly symmetric (with deviations from circularity under 2%) over almost 4000 days. We characterize the decelerated expansion of SN 1993J until approximately day 1500 after explosion with an expansion parameter m = 0.845 ± 0.005 (R ∝ tm). ROSAT PSPC/HRI observations of the open cluster NGC 2422

We present the results of a ROSAT study of NGC 2422, a southern open cluster at a distance of about 470 pc, with an age close to the Pleiades. Source detection was performed on two observations, a 10-ks PSPC and a 40-ks HRI pointing, with a detection algorithm based on wavelet transforms, particularly suited to detecting faint sources in crowded fields. We have detected 78 sources, 13 of which were detected only with the HRI, and 37 detected only with the PSPC. For each source, we have computed the 0.2-2.0 keV X-ray flux. Using optical data from the literature and our own low-dispersion spectroscopic observations, we find candidate optical counterparts for 62 X-ray sources, with more than 8…

Electroweak interaction in muonic atoms

The parity non-conserving effective neutral current interaction between charged leptons and nucleons is studied in its implications for atomic physics. Present results on heavy electronic atoms are discussed within the standard electroweak theory and beyond. The new features provided by muonic atoms open the way to the nuclear-spin-dependent parity non-conserving effects. Different observables proposed to study these effects in muonic atoms are reviewed.
