COVID-19 Remote Work : Body Stress, Self-Efficacy, Teamwork, and Perceived Productivity of Knowledge Workers
2021
Due to COVID-19, companies were forced to adopt new work processes, and reduce modern work environments such as collaboration spaces. Professionals from many fields were forced to work remotely, almost overnight. Little is known about the impact of such non-volunteer remote work on productivity, stress, and other key aspects of work performance. To further our understanding of the impacts of this situation and remote work in general, we conducted an exploratory study by studying 28 knowledge work professionals (researchers, software developers, interior designers, service designers, and development consultants) from the viewpoint of perceived productivity and aspects affecting it in this un…

Experimental Evolution Reveals a Genetic Basis for Membrane-Associated Virus Release
2021
Many animal viruses replicate and are released from cells in close association to membranes. However, whether this is a passive process or is controlled by the virus remains poorly understood. Importantly, the genetic basis and evolvability of membrane-associated viral shedding have not been investigated. To address this, we performed a directed evolution experiment using coxsackievirus B3, a model enterovirus, in which we repeatedly selected the free-virion or the fast-sedimenting membrane-associated viral subpopulations. The virus responded to this selection regime by reproducibly fixing a series of mutations that altered the extent of membrane-associated viral shedding, as revealed by fu…
Protective and Educational Effects of Physical Activity Practice on Mental Health in Young Age during COVID-19 Lockdown
2022
Background: The restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic have modified the lifestyle of young people, worsening their mental health. Although some countries were allowed to practice outdoor physical activity (PA) in cases of lockdown, the PA level in the general population decreased. The current study aims to assess the differences in fear of COVID-19, anxiety, neuroticism, and general self-efficacy between university students who practiced PA during the second wave of lockdown and those who did not practice any PA. Methods: The sample consisted of 276 university students (176 females, 63.8%; mean age: 22.13, SD: ±3.94) who answered an online questionnaire detecting life habits …
Postpandemic Urban Habitat in the Age of Contamination
2020
The challenge for post-pandemic urban habitats will be to recover their natural polycentrism, the diversity of their neighborhoods which, ceasing to be fragile suburbs, return to being places of lives and not just of homes, bridging the educational, working, cultural, digital divides, acquiring micro-places of public health and self-sufficient energy communities. I imagine cities of a renewed urban proxemic made up of "augmented urban communities" (according to the principles I described earlier) that reduce their frantic centripetal mobility and that facilitate a more measured mobility guaranteeing the answer to many needs within 15 minutes from home (the “15-minute city”, as already launc…
More nature in the city

According to projects and practices that the Italian botanists and ecologists are carrying out for bringing “more nature in the city”, new insights for a factual integration between ecological perspectives and more consolidated aesthetic and agronomic approaches to the sustainable planning and management of urban green areas are provided.
Cultural heritage through history and nature: conservation and re-use. The Scicli case study
2013
The research originates from a relationship between a local body of illustrious traditions and a research facility of the University of Palermo – the Interdepartmental Research Centre on Historical Centres (hereafter C.I.R.CE.S.), that has the aim of providing consultancy and scientific support to the initiatives of territorial bodies concerning policies and urban and territorial redevelopment plans and the redevelopment of historical centres. Scicli is one of the most important towns belonging to the province of Ragusa. The urban centre, in addition to being able to boast a special identity deriving from the peculiar impact of the dazzling baroque architectures on the surrounding landscap…

The effects on riding performance using active vs passive recovery during a simulated motocross race
2017
Aleix Ollé Casanovas. 2017. The effects on riding performance using active vs passive recovery during a simulated motocross race. University of Jyväskylä. 53p. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of active and passive recovery methods in order to improve physical performance between motocross races. Exercise induced muscle damage post motocross racing was assessed as well. Participants performed 2 races of 30 minutes with one hour break in between. During the break they performed either active or passive recovery protocols. Specific motocross performance outcomes and athlete’s physical conditions were measured during, and before and after every motocross race. Lap times (…
