Combined small-angle x-ray scattering/extended x-ray absorption fine structure study of coated Co nanoclusters in bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate
2009
Chemically stable cobalt nanostructures have been prepared with Co(II) reduction in the confined space of cobalt bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate, Co(AOT)2, reverse micelles dispersed in n-heptane. The reaction was carried out by adding a solution of sodium borohydride in ethanol (1% weight) to a 0.2M micellar solution of Co(AOT)2 in n-heptane at a reductant to Co(II) molar ratio of 4. This procedure involves the rapid formation of surfactant-coated Co nanoparticles followed by their slow separation as nanostructures embedded in a sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate matrix. The resulting composites, characterized by extended x-ray absorption fine structure and small-angle x-ray scattering…
Gas Selective Ultrathin Organic Covalent Networks Synthesized by iPECVD: Does the Central Metal Ion Matter?
2017
The potential of porphyrin-derived metal organic covalent networks (OCN) thin films on light gas separations has been recently demonstrated. However, whether or not the central metal ion of the porphyrin plays a key role on separation performance has yet to be elucidated. Here, one metal-free and three metal-containing (zinc(II), manganese(III), and cobalt(II)) porphyrin-derived OCN thin films are successfully deposited on various substrates via an easily scalable initiated plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition approach. Among these four porphyrin-derived OCN thin films exhibiting superior light gas separation performances, three of them are synthesized for the first time. The gas perme…
Controlling phase formation in solids: rational synthesis of phase separated Co@Fe2O3 heteroparticles and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles
2011
A wet chemical approach from organometallic reactants allowed the targeted synthesis of Co@Fe(2)O(3) heterodimer and CoFe(2)O(4) ferrite nanoparticles. They display magnetic properties that are useful for magnetic MRI detection.
Combustion of activated aluminum
2006
Abstract Combustion of activated aluminum was studied by four different methods: microscopic imaging of the preignition process, digital imaging of the combustion process at pressures up to 64 bar in air, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, TGA, and DSC. Activation by three fundamentally different methods was found effective in enhancing both the ignitability and the burn rate. The complex fluoride coating prevented agglomeration completely in all stages of combustion, while the nickel and cobalt coatings promoted agglomeration of aluminum oxide at combustion, but prevented the agglomeration of the aluminum metal before combustion. Nickel coating catalyzed aluminum nitride formation, accelerating…
Magnetic field effect on electrodeposition of cobalt dendrites
2012
International audience; We are studying the effect of a magnetic field on cobalt dendrites grown by electrodeposition in thin cell. Several electrochemical parameters like pH, current density, initial concentration, are known to affect the crystalline structure of electrodeposited cobalt. Here we analyze, for two values of the pH, the effect of a high magnetic field (6 T) on the growth direction of the dendrites with respect to the crystalline axis of the structure.
Synthesis of graphene oxide-intercalated α-hydroxides by metathesis and their decomposition to graphene/metal oxide composites
2010
Graphene oxide-intercalated alpha-metal hydroxides were prepared using layers from the delaminated colloidal dispersions of cetyltrimethylammonium-intercalated graphene oxide and dodecylsulfate-intercalated alpha-hydroxide of nickel/cobalt as precursors. The reaction of the two dispersions leads to de-intercalation of the interlayer ions from both the layered solids and the intercalation of the negatively charged graphene oxide sheets between the positively charged layers of the alpha-hydroxide. Thermal decomposition of the intercalated solids yields graphene/nanocrystalline metal oxide composites. Electron microscopy analysis of the composites indicates that the nanoparticles are intercala…
Dual Ni/Ni-Co electrodeposited coatings for improved erosion-corrosion behaviour
2019
Abstract Industrial applications of hydrophobic metallic coatings are limited to durability of their surface structures against detrimental effects of the surrounding environments. In the present research, the life-long of the hierarchical structure of hydrophobic nickel coating in an erosive-corrosive solution was investigated. The effect of alloying with cobalt on strengthening the hierarchical structures was also investigated. In this regard, highly hydrophobic Ni/Ni, Ni-Co/Ni-Co, dual Ni/Ni-Co and dual Ni-Co/Ni coatings with rough hierarchical structures were electrodeposited. In situ electrochemical measurements were performed to investigate changes in corrosion resistance and hydropho…
H2-TPR, XPS and TEM Study of the Reduction of Ru and Re promoted Co/γ-Al2O3, Co/TiO2 and Co/SiC Catalysts
2016
<p class="1Body">Effects of Ru and Re promoters on Co-CoOx catalysts supported on γ-Al2O3, TiO2 and SiC were investigated to improve the understanding of the role of promoters of the active phase of Co-CoOx-Ru and Co-CoOx-Re. The influence of promoter addition on the composition and activity of the catalysts was characterized by several methods, such as H2-TPR, XPS, chemisorption and TEM. Furthermore, the role of support and metal-support interaction was especially studied and different support materials were compared.</p&g…
Enhanced kinetics of hole transfer and electrocatalysis during photocatalytic oxygen evolution by cocatalyst tuning
2016
Understanding photophysical and electrocatalytic processes during photocatalysis in a powder suspension system is crucial for developing efficient solar energy conversion systems. We report a substantial enhancement by a factor of 3 in photocatalytic efficiency for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by adding trace amounts (∼0.05 wt %) of noble metals (Rh and Ru) to a 2 wt % cobalt oxide modified Ta3N5 photocatalyst particulate. The optimized system exhibited high quantum efficiencies (QEs) of up to 28 and 8.4% at 500 and 600 nm in 0.1 M Na2S2O8 at pH 14. By isolation of the electrochemical components to generate doped cobalt oxide electrodes, the electrocatalytic activity of cobalt oxide …
Investigation of La2O3 and/or (Co,Mn)3O4 deposits on Crofer22APU for the SOFC interconnect application
2009
International audience; Chromia forming alloys (stainless steels) are among the best candidates for SOFC interconnects. However, problems of decreasing electronic conductivity during high temperature service and volatility of chromium oxide scales need to be solved. Electronically conductive surface coatings, which also reduce oxide scale growth and chromium volatility, are needed to improve stainless steel interconnects. The goal of this study is to investigate combinations of lanthanum oxide (La2O3) and cobalt manganese oxide ((Co,Mn)3O4) coatings on Crofer22APU stainless steel. Thin film coatings of La2O3 (~200 nm) and Co,Mn (1:1) (~2 mm) were deposited via metal organic chemical vapor d…
