Coincidental loss of bacterial virulence in multi-enemy microbial communities.

The coincidental virulence evolution hypothesis suggests that outside-host selection, such as predation, parasitism and resource competition can indirectly affect the virulence of environmentally-growing bacterial pathogens. While there are some examples of coincidental environmental selection for virulence, it is also possible that the resource acquisition and enemy defence is selecting against it. Residual antibacterial activity of a new modified sodium hypochlorite-based endodontic irrigation solution

Objective: In this in vitro study the antibacterial substantivity of a new sodium hypochlorite-based root canal irrigant (Hypoclean) in bovine root dentin was investigated. Study Design: Ninety dentin tubes prepared from bovine incisor teeth were used. After contamination for 14 days with Enterococcus faecalis, the specimens were divided into five groups as follows: Hypoclean; Tetraclean; 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl); infected dentin tubes (positive control); and sterile dentin tubes (negative control). Protective role of glutathione addition against wine-related stress in Oenococcus oeni

Some wine-related stress factors, such as ethanol and low pH, may alter the cell redox balance of O. oeni. Production, stability, gene sequencing and in situ anti-Listeria activity of mundticin KS expressed by three Enterococcus mundtii strains

Three enterococci (WFE3, WFE20 and WFE31) selected as presumptive bacteriocin producers were found to be active against Listeria monocytogenes. In this study, due to their potential industrial/food applications, the three bacterial isolates were extensively characterized. Identification was performed by means of a combined 16S rRNA gene sequencing and multiplex PCR approach, and was confirmed with the sequencing of a partial region of a protein-encoding gene, namely pheS. Abstract The agricultural practices applied in pre-harvest greatly influence the presence and the levels of microorganisms in fresh produce. Comparison of organic peracids in wastewater treatment: Disinfection, oxidation and corrosion.

The use of organic peracids in wastewater treatment is attracting increasing interest. The common beneficial features of peracids are effective anti-microbial properties, lack of harmful disinfection by-products and high oxidation power. In this study performic (PFA), peracetic (PAA) and perpropionic acids (PPA) were synthesized and compared in laboratory batch experiments for the inactivation of Escherichia coli and enterococci in tertiary wastewater, oxidation of bisphenol-A and for corrosive properties. Epidural spinal abscesses.

Fifteen cases of peridural empyemas are reported. 12 patients reported with motor dysfunction of the lower extremities and pain radiating from the spine. In one case, localized pain of the spine was discovered and in two cases there were no signs of spinal or radiating pain. Treatment in all cases was laminectomy and systemic antibiotic administration. Microbiological analysis showed staphylococcus aureus in 11 cases. 9 patients recovered with no neurological defects, two had major improvement of the paresis, and one died. Three patients with paraplegia recovered from the primary infection.
