Background Cheilitis granulomatosa (CG) is a disturbing and persistent idiopathic lip swelling. The cause and treatment has not been wholly elucidated. Some reports infer that CG is mainly associated with dental infection but no firm or reliable microbiological evidence has been provided for a causative organism. Novel Penicillin-Type Analogues Bearing a Variable Substituted 2-Azetidinone Ring at Position 6: Synthesis and Biological Evaluation

The synthesis and the biological activity of novel semi-synthetic β-lactam compounds containing an azetidinone moiety joined to the amino-nitrogen of the (+)-6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) as new antibacterial agents is reported. The synthesized compounds were screened for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against a panel of Gram positive and Gram negative pathogens and environmental bacteria. Tested compounds displayed good antimicrobial activity against all tested Gram positive bacteria and for Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis antimicrobial activity resulted higher than that of the reference antibiotic. Inhibition of foodborne pathogen bacteria by essential oils extracted from citrus fruits cultivated in Sicily

Abstract The antagonistic activity of the essential oils (EOs) extracted by hydrodistillation from the fruit peel of several citrus genotypes (pummelo, grapefruit, orange, kumquat, mandarin and lemon) was evaluated against foodborne pathogen bacteria (43 strains of Listeria monocytogenes , 35 strains of Staphylococcus aureus and 14 strains of Salmonella enterica ). Five commercial EOs were used for comparison. Most of the EOs were more effective against the Gram-positive bacteria rather than Salmonella . The objective of this study was to assess the antimicrobial effectiveness of chitosonium acetate films on the growth of Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus. The samples were tested in both laboratory conditions using Tryptone Soy Broth (TSB) and in a real food system using fish soup. The study was carried out at different temperatures (4, 12, and 37 degrees C) in order to discern the influence of such variables. Microbial characterisation of fermented meat productions from the Sicilian breed "Suino Nero dei Nebrodi"

Two traditional sausage products (“salsiccia” and “salame”) processed from the raw meat of the Black Sicilian swine “Suino Nero dei Nebrodi” were microbiologically investigated during the manufacturing and ripening stages. Both products were dominated by lactic acid bacteria (LAB), especially rod-shaped types. The concentration of enterococci was consistent in salame. Coagulase-negative cocci increased slower than LAB. Yeasts showed an increasing trend during the ripening of both products.
