Cohort-Dependent Sex Ratio Biases in the American Crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus)of the Tempisque Basin

2015

A male-biased sex ratio of 3:1 has been reported for a population of American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) in the Tempisque River Basin, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. If confirmed, this would constitute one of the largest male-biased sex ratios reported for any population of a member of the genus Crocodylus. Here, we examine the aforementioned population of C. acutus and report on sex ratios of hatchling, juvenile, and adult age classes within a sample of 474 crocodiles captured in the Tempisque Basin between May 2012 and June 2014. Hatchling sex ratio is exceptionally male biased (3.5:1), an imbalance that is maintained in juveniles but is reduced in adults (1.5:1). Mark–recapture data documen…

Three-dimensional kernel-based coda attenuation imaging of caldera structures controlling the 1982-84 Campi Flegrei unrest

2019

Abstract Coda-wave attenuation imaging has risen as a state-of-the-art technique to depict volcanic structures using their dispersion effects. The 1982–84 seismic and deformation unrest at Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy) is a unique example of non-eruptive volcanic activity in a structured caldera. Here, we propose the first application of 3D coda-attenuation kernels to image caldera structures at multiple frequencies during unrest. Using sensitivity kernels is necessary to assess the effective resolution of coda imaging in highly heterogeneous volcanoes. The technique relies on the solution of Paasschens' equations in the framework of radiative transfer theory. The results map coda attenuati…

A new autumn-flowering species of Allium (Alliaceae) from Croatia

2009

Here we describe Allium telmatum Bogdanovic, Brullo, Giusso & Salmeri, a new species of Allium sect. Codonoprasum from North Dalmatia (Croatia). Its chromosome number (2n = 32), karyotype, leaf anatomy, ecology and taxonomical relationships are examined. Several features, such as phenology (flowering in autumn), occurrence in coastal salt marshes, tetraploid chromosome number, and morphology, indicate that it is most closely related to the Tyrrhenian species Allium savii. On the basis of our herbarium survey, we present here a distribution map of the autumn-flowering species of Allium sect. Codonoprasum in the Mediterranean area.

Asociaciones de Ostrácodos del Mioceno Temprano—Medio de Loma Negra (Bardenas Reales de Navarra, Cuenca del Ebro): Evolución Paleoambiental de un Med…

2014

LOWER-MIDDLE MIOCENE OSTRACOD ASSEMBLAGES OF LOMA NEGRA (BARDENAS REALES DE NAVARRA, EBRO BASIN): PALAEOENVIRONMENTAL EVOLUTION OF A LACUSTRINE SYSTEM. The palaeoenvironmental evolution of the Loma Negra section (Bardenas Reales de Navarra, Ebro Basin) during the lower-middle Miocene, is studied for the first time. The paleoen- vironmental interpretation is based on the recovered ostracod assemblages and the sedimentology. The lower part of this section is composed by red, yellow and grey mudstones, and with Paralimnocythere sp. as the most abundant ostracod taxon. The lithological features and the fau- nistic assemblage allows the interpretation of a paleoenvironment with the development o…

Teodosio II e la "conpendiosa divalium constitutionum scientia"

2015

The author counters the idea that Theodosius II's codification expressed a conception of self-sufficiency of imperial legislation and argues that, rather, the emperor recognised the value of the writings of classical jurisprudence as another component of the overall legal order. Nov. Th. 1 does not express a derogatory attitude towards the ancient jurists. The criticism of the 'immense copia librorum' and the 'cloud of volumina' as the causes of the poor results of the studium iuris are, yes, addressed to the texts of the ancient jurists, but not as expressions of scientific elaboration, but as dispersive and inadequate sources of knowledge of the imperial constitutions. The emperor remedied…

CUDA-BLASTP: Accelerating BLASTP on CUDA-enabled graphics hardware

2011

Scanning protein sequence database is an often repeated task in computational biology and bioinformatics. However, scanning large protein databases, such as GenBank, with popular tools such as BLASTP requires long runtimes on sequential architectures. Due to the continuing rapid growth of sequence databases, there is a high demand to accelerate this task. In this paper, we demonstrate how GPUs, powered by the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA), can be used as an efficient computational platform to accelerate the BLASTP algorithm. In order to exploit the GPU's capabilities for accelerating BLASTP, we have used a compressed deterministic finite state automaton for hit detection as wel…
